People who know me or read my blog, understand that I do not care much for Darryl Sutter and the way he has chosen to run this franchise.
Well, Sutter’s comments on Thursday at the Flames Charity Golf tournament struck a chord with me, as they tend to do.
Before I rant though, let’s start with a good quote from the farmer himself:
"This is going to be the best training camp since I've been here; somebody isn't going to be happy."
He was of course referring to the abundance of players the Flames have signed under one way deals and the negative balance the Flames currently hold in reference to the Salary cap. This was a good statement, albeit a little contrived, but still it lets the players know that no one is necessarily safe.
Then he said this with reference to Jokinen:
"I think the most important thing, regardless of what everyone thinks, No. 1 is the fact he wanted to play here, which is critical in today's world. Wanting to play in a hockey market, a pressure market is not for everybody and he wanted to do that. No. 2 is we missed him after he left. He's a big centreman. What were his numbers, 15 goals and 30 assists or whatever? Well if it was 20 and 30 or 30 and 30 then everybody would have had a different opinion."
Well no S%$T Sutter! If a player performs better than we would have a different opinion on the guy, but the truth is the player has been descending in skill and talent ever since he left south beach; with no sign of returning to prior form. What’s with players taking their talents to south beach anyways?
“You always look at depth by position and that certainly gives us that. Clearly this is the strongest centreman position since I've been here."
Yes the Flames are deep down the middle but the deepness starts once you get past the fact that the Flames do not possess a number one guy, which remains a large problem for this organization.
Let’s look at some relevant examples, shall we?
Chicago, San Jose, Montreal, and Philadephia are the four teams that vied for the Cup last year. Look who occupies the of the middle of their line-ups: Jonathan Toews, Joe Thornton, Scott Gomez, and Mike Richards. All studs in their own right; OK maybe not Gomez but he does have a couple of Cups.
The Flames: Jokinen, Langkow, Conroy, Stajan, Backlund. One is near death, the other might not be able to play, and the remaining three either have played on horrendous teams their entire careers or are too young to remember anything before the turn of the century.
Stunning depth.
"What a lot of people don't understand is that the cap is something that changes day to day. It's based on 186 days so we'll see how it sorts out."
Once again Sutter belittles the media and public for not knowing the ins and outs of the cap. Come up with a new line Sutter, we have heard this one before! There are others out there who get the cap. Yes it’s complicated, but there is no secret club of mastermind geniuses that hide out in underground dungeons crunching numbers on their TI-83’s while the rest of the world ponders in thought about the complexities of the cap.
The Flames have zero wiggle room as of now which sets up for a competitive camp, which is healthy; the competitive aspect not the lack of cap space
But if Fantasy sports have taught me anything, it is that a bunch of mediocre players never win championships, and the team’s decent players’ skill is wasted on sub-par versions of teams that never make the cut.

There is only ONE way the Flames have a chance to win the Cup this year IMO... Brad Richards!! unless by some miracle we sort this cap situation out, it's not gonna happen!
Flames window for the cup is closed time to wake up... just sit back and enjoy the mediocre hockey!! I just think that Jerome deserves a Cup! Sutter should find him a decent Center!!
oh.. and I wouldn't believe anything Sutter says anymore... two weeks before Phaneuf was traded he said "Absolutely no truth to the rumors"... We're like mushrooms to him... fed shit and kept in the dark!
First of all the Flames are not the disaster you make them out to be. If it wasn't for the Phaneuf's Shenanigans (if you don't know what I am talking about then you haven't followed the news in calgary) we would not have had that losing streak and we would have made the playoffs.
Pretty much everything went wrong for calgary last year, a lot of one goal losses, dressing room problems (When Phaneuf showed up to camp wearing the C and told Iggy that he wasn't the leader anymore the problems started).... still Calgary finished 9th in the tough conference with more points than Philly.
Newman, you are too hard on Sutter, In 2008-2009 he put together a great team that would have beat Chicago and contended for the cup if not for injuries... Regehr, Gio, Sarich and Phaneuf were all hurt or got hurt that series....our top 4 D, no team in this could survive that.... I think this is the year our luck turns around, I am super excited to see the team this year and sick of whining Flames fans that don't remember how D.Sutt pretty much saved this franchise.
Oh, and of course Sutter is not going to broadcast a trade to the media before it happens..... imagine if he did that and then the trade fell through, the player would have the media all over him for the res of the season. Sutter is class, he rewards players that work hard for the team and put their bodies on the... like Langkow and Regehr, maybe Langk has been a dissapointment offensively, but in the series against Chicago he played with two broken hands, Regehr played hurt the entire season last year.....
Teams like Montreal sent a message to their players by trading Halak, saying that no matter how hard you work for the team, it doesn't matter you will not be rewarded, That's not the way to build a team that will work hard and sacrifice their bodies to win.
BJ... agreed Sutter is not the anti-Christ. I think we all feel like he has something up his sleeve that will be great for the Flames.. but I don't think bringing back Tanguay or Jokinen for that matter was it... this is where the frustration comes in.. where is the light at the end of the tunnel?
I know Sutter is not as stupid as people thinks he is... but its just the obvious things... Staios and Kotalik. Bad Contracts. Where's the solution. I guess we just have to wait and see... but agreed with BJ.. don't get your panties in a twist!!
BJ: Clearly we sit on opposite sides of the fence and thats fine. Sutter did save this franchise...back in 2004! Its 2010 and the game has changed and passed him by in the meantime, thats my point. Too hard on him? I think everyone is far too nice to the guy and no one stands up to him.
His grace period has just lasted too long. Its time for some fresh ideas. You can only beat a dead horse sooo many times before all your doing is repeating the same mistakes over and over again...Olli...
The biggest one I have trouble swallowing is Staois. Ironically, that contract alone is the reason we may have to trade a stud Dman for pucks, bags, picks

Sutter is garbage, time to move on. he was good in the early part of this decade, but the decade is over and so should his time in calgary. rebuild might be a good idea, ageing kipper (still not bad, last year anyway) ageing iggy, maybe its time to trade in the old models for some new younger ones and go the way of pitts and the hawks
We're like mushrooms to him... fed shit and kept in the dark! That is an AWESOME LINE!!!!
We're paying $3 million over the cap for a pretty old and mediocre team with very few prospects in the system..and for pretty much exactly the same team that couldn't score more than 2 goals for 40 games straight to end last season. That's that not a "slump"...that's what this team is. I used to defend Sutter more than most, but last year's disaster desperation deals (Dion, Kotalik, Staio) ended that. There is no plan. His time has come.
I don't totally disagree that it is time for a fresh look at things.... but getting rid of Sutter doesn't guarantee the next guy will do a better job... I think he should get this year..... and yes I agree it is 6 years since 2004, but our team was dynamite in 2008-2009 until the injuries..... I don't think Jokinen is as bad as everyone says... He is that big (6'4) centre that we need....
Sorry, great blogs by the way..... I never post on the net, but you, Sane Op and the other Flames guys get me going and make me want to write
Our prospects are good..... TJ Brodie 4th round pick and a potential star..... Ryan Howse 3rd round pick...... Not even mentioning mitch Wahl who put up as many points as Eberle last year..... or Nemisz who many scouts (not just calgary's) have pegged as a future Sundin.....
Kevin R.... we don't have to trade a stud D-man.... Staios may be a great teacher for Seabrook and Brodie in Abbotsford.....
Not a fan of this blog, too much pessimism. Would it kill people to look at the positives, and the depth being a good thing? Lundmark centering Nystrom and Iggy anyone?
There is a light at the end of the tunnel guys. It's a train.
Re: Flames34: Pessimism or realism? You pick
I do agree with BJ, lets see what this year brings, we may be suprised or we can look forward to major change.
