2014-15 Preview: Pacific Division Edition

A Glance Back

I don’t think anybody could have predicted the outcome of the brutally nicknamed metro-terrible division last season. Columbus impressed while the Capitals faltered. The Penguins took a dip in the playoffs while the Rangers surprised many after a rough start. Other teams sort of slotted right into their rightful position. The Flyers had an impressive regular season but lost to the Blueshirts in game 7 while the Devils barely missed the playoffs. In fact The Los Angeles Kings won another Stanley Cup. Pretty sure you all knew that already. But they did something else this year that will boggle the mind of every hockey fan pre 2005 lockout. They hosted (get this) an outdoor hockey game in California. Complete with beach volleyball and NHL merchandise consisting of cargo shorts, undershirts and flip-flops.

Surprisingly enough, it was a huge hit and they’re getting another one this year. Now lets talk about hockey. San Jose had a great regular season again before failing in the playoffs again. What’s new? Bruce Boudreau lost another game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs. What’s new? The Los Angeles Kings are still the beasts of California. What’s new? Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver all missed the playoffs and Phoenix, well, Arizona, also stayed out.

Come to think of it, Californian teams were the only ones to advance from this division, which I’m pretty sure is going to happen again. Especially with the Central division somehow getting stronger than it was last year. Moral of the story, the Los Angeles Kings are good at hockey. Not much else to see here. (We’ll miss you Teemu).
