Saku Koivu announced his retirement from hockey today after a long career spanning 18 years. Unlike others who have managed to stick around for nearly two decades, Koivu was not blessed with health his entire way through. He fought through things other players had never even thought about having to deal with.
Koivu is the epitome of a strong player. He is the comeback to every “European players are weak” argument and he has proved time and time again to be a warrior.
Koivu is the longest service Montreal Canadiens captain in franchise history. His 10 years with the ‘C’ stitched on his sweater ties him with Jean Beliveau in that category. He is the first and only European captain in Habs history and he played 14 years for the franchise.
