Players choose their numbers for various reasons. Some may chose a number that pays tribute to a family member, birth year or a favorite player from their childhood. Some players even change numbers because of bad luck, or their number isn't available because of a player already wearing it or it may be retired.
That brings me to Jay McKee the former shot blocking expert for the Buffalo Sabres & current blue liner for the St. Louis Blues. Us Sabre fans will forever Jay as # 74, the man who bled Blue & Gold and Red & Black for us for 10 years. Now McKee dons #77 for the Blues.
I was wondering why Jay had changed his number. Was it because he wanted to wear his birth year? Or was it because he just needed to try to chage his luck? I was guessing the whole luck thing. So I decided to ask Jay today when I saw him before tonights game and the answer was a bit suprising at first. Until I thought about it for a while.
Jay simply put it as "74 belongs in Buffalo" He also added that if he ever comes back to Buffalo to play he will revive the the #74. By changing his number this season McKee is paying homage to his years as a Sabre and a Western New Yorker. And I for one couldn't be happier. Maybe once Jay has fullfilled his contract with the Blues he will return home and bring back the long loved 74 Sabre sweater. Who knows it may even be sooner!!!!!
Good Luck Jay and our door is always open to your return.
well written buddy, very sold dman would seem to fit right in for you guys on your defense maybe the one dman your missing great job
An interesting story and a classy guy. Now that he's healthy, he's been playing better and better for the Blues.
Very classy move by him. Hope to see him back in a sabres uniform soon!!!
to dad hes been a healthy scratch the past out of 6 games. buffalo wouldnt let that happen to him!
bad* typo. my bad!
isnt mckee's contract a longer one?
He signd a four year deal with the Blues last year. So basically he is half way home
why do you all want mckee back? great guy and all but we seem to have a lot of talented youth right now at the d position and i don't see any room for a guy who has been a healthy scratch just recently. oh and really just what we need another injury- ridden defenseman (spacek, tallinder, kalinin).
Get McKee. He's a talented leader with a few solid years left in him. Plus Buffalo loves him.
