So it's all over the news. It looks like Sundin is a lock for a 2 year deal worth 10 to 11 million. I wouldn't really call this news as it has been speculated for a long time. There is seems to be a split amongst the Leafs Nation. I think most would agree that Mats has been amazing in his 12 years with the club however it seems a lot of people feel it's a good time to move on. Time to buy talent and just keep trucking along. Others feel he is what the Leafs need and that he cannot be replaced.
But who would lead lead the team in his place?
Right now you've got Mats as the Captain and if he would leave, who would fill the void? Sure there is lots of talk of Ryan Smyth and the two guys from Buffalo who will be UFAs soon but would the Leafs be any better off? Is it better to give Mats two more years, let him retire as a Leaf and wait on their youth or a better UFA crop?
Lots of options here. Personally, I like the signing cause I have always liked Mats. I even found that during the last season, he was a different Mats. Better in front of the camera with interviews and he had a different look on his face. He wants to win.
As EK mentioned in a blog, this is something that needs to happen. I am getting the feeling that JFJ might make some moves at the draft and also some UFA work. It could be it's time to unload a big contract and get some cap space for the UFAs. I wouldn't be shocked to read about them making a pitch to Smyth camp but they are going to need some room and with only around $10 mil to spend, something is going to have to happen.
Quick note on Game 2 last night. I think the Sens spent 9 days reading their own press. Man they looked weak. Nice to see JS getting the praise he deserves and Emery looked amazing for the first time in the playoffs. Spezza and Heatly have the size but no way they will use it. That will be their downfall.
