This afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers placed defenseman Mark Fayne on waivers on the purpose of assisgnement. If he clears, he would be assigned to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League. Earlier this season, there was discussion of a potential Fayne-Hartnell swap. Fayne has one assist in 24 games this season. If he were to come to Columbus, he may surpass Cody Goloubef, Dalton Prout, Kevin Connuaton, and Andrew Bodnarchuk. He would still be a bottom pairing defenseman, but his experience may help youngsters like Ryan Murray.
Also, the Montreal Canadiens placed Alex Semin on unconditional waivers for the purpose of termination. Semin, a former 40 goal scorer, has only four points this season (1 goal, 3 assists) with the Habs this season. The main reasoning for this buyout is his lack of scoring punch, defensive play, and failure of fitting into the system of Canadiens' coach Michel Thereien. If picked up by Columbus, he would probably be in a bottom six forward position, but maybe a top six guy if he performs up to the way he did in Washington. However, since he cleared waivers once, can he clear it again? Or will he be picked up?
More to come…
