Another Jersey?!?!?!

As expected, I figured Buffalo would come out with a new third jersey this season. However, what I do find a little disconcerting, is all the talk about how starting next season, Buffalo will be switching jersey's, again.

Over the past 14 years, Buffalo has had, well it's hard to count. At the end of the 1996 season, Buffalo switched from the classic jerseys of the blue, gold, and white to the black and white. Like obedient fans, we all went out and got jersey's. Throughout the upcoming years, Buffalo developed a third jersey, blood red, with the crossed swords on the front. these were relatively short lived.

Now, I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but then in 2006-2007, Buffalo switched to the ever popular "Buff-a-slug" in blue and gold. Throughout the course of the past few years, the classic blue and gold jersey's from the team's beginning years were released as a third jersey. In 2008, Buffalo rolled out the old school white jersey's from their early years. Then, for the 2008-2010, Buffalo had their third jersey, with the old logo, with a relatively new twist.

I think now would be an appropriate time to mention that the "Buff-a-slug", (which I see so many people complaining about, yet thousands wearing), was a top selling jersey on NHL.com for quite a long time.

So, why, might I ask, are the Sabres taking the money to do an overhaul on their jersey's, for a 3rd time, over the past 14 years? To me, this doesn't seem normal. I don't see the 40th anniversary of the team as an excuse to do a complete and total overhaul to the jersey's. I personally think it'd be a great idea to have the original jersey's form the 70's serve as the 3rd jersey this season (I love those jersey's, have two of them actually. Gare and Lafontaine). Plus, what is the point in doing a complete change in jersey's after having these "new" jersey's for a total of 4 seasons?

Now, I realize fully that this is a complete rant on something very, unimportant to the actual game of hockey. However, I think a few things need to be looked at with this. One, Buffalo doesn't need new jersey's, and odds are, it's a ploy to get more money. Two, to all the people who complain about the "buff-a-slug" logo, I bet you've got 2 in your closet. Plus, if it's so ugly, why the hell are so many people wearing them at Sabres games? Why is it when one walks around Buffalo and surrounding areas, you see everyone and their brother in some semblance of Sabres gear (showing the buff-a-slug). Three, I hope this isn't the primary concern with Sabres management. The Sabres should be focusing on getting some new players to boost the offense, and finally, I have seen the supposed look of the new jersey's. Now, I understand that it may not be the accurate one, but I keep seeing the same logo over and over. It looks like a cheap division 3 hockey school jersey. To whoever designed these new jersey's, the Sabres has a tradition of great looking crests on their jersey's... The best you could come up with is the word Buffalo across the chest? That's just sad. My artistic capabilities are just this side of stick figures, and I could have come up with a better looking logo than that.

Again, I realize this is just a rant. However, looking over the history of Buffalo Sabres jersey's, do we really need another change? At this rate, management may as well just change the jersey every year. I hope that the Sabres upper-echelon didn't make this the top priority this off season. As far as I'm concerned, they are just focused on trying to make more money instead of putting a quality product on the ice.

The 40th Anniversary of the Buffalo Sabres is a monumental occasion. I think it's something that is cause to celebrate, and look back on 40 great years of Buffalo hockey. Maybe with the money from the 2nd jersey change in less than 5 years, the Sabres will be able to put a good product on the ice, to make the 40th season memorable, instead of thinking up ways to make more money.
