There’s a lot of rumors circulating regarding trades, especially one that would send Tyler Myers to Anaheim, and bring Ryan Getzlaf to Buffalo. However, unfortunately, this deal isn’t as simple as that.

If it was as simple as Anaheim giving Buffalo Getzlaf, and Buffalo giving Anaheim Myers, given the current state of things, that’s simple;

Do it. Pull the trigger, and bring Getzlaf to Buffalo.

By offloading Myers (and believe me, I wish it was someone other than Myers. He’s a great defenseman), Buffalo brings in the #1 center, and power forward they so desperately need. He’s big (6’4”, 220lbs), aggressive, and finds the back of the net on a regular basis. Plus, Buffalo has freed themselves of Myers contract for the next 7 years, paying him $5,500,000 a year, and can hopefully give Getzlaf that money that was intended for Myers.

However, right now, Getzlaf is pulling in 5,325,000 for the next 1 1/2 seasons. Myers is pulling in 1,300,000 a season. His new contract comes into effect next year. That’s a difference of $4,025,000. Buffalo can’t fit him in right now with the salary cap. Buffalo would have to package together some players in addition to sending Myers to Anaheim.

I highly doubt that the Ducks want Derek Roy, but that would allow to free up almost enough money to pull in Getzlaf. Boyes could be trade bait as well, in addition to any number of players right now. Plus, Buffalo can also package together one of the young kids. This is a sacrifice that Buffalo should be willing to make, especially if it means bringing a player like Getzlaf to Buffalo.

Buffalo could also trade Roy (or any other player) to other teams for draft picks. That’s probably the best that Buffalo is going to get from any other teams. That way, Buffalo can just do the swap of Myers for Getzlaf. But, some players have to be moved first.

Buffalo is lacking in offense right now. Aside from the soft style of defensive play, no one is able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Getzlaf would bring a much needed scoring edge. Even if Enroth or Miller is only giving up 2 goals a night (Last 2 games, 2-1 loss to Winnipeg, 2-0 loss to Toronto), Buffalo isn’t putting it in the back of the net. Getzlaf would hopefully fix this.

Unfortunately, I don’t see the Sabres doing this. Regier isn’t going to trade away Derek Roy, or any of his core players. If he is, he’s going to ask for way too much and the other GM’s will laugh at him. As much as I would love seeing Getzlaf in a Sabres jersey, it’s probably not going to happen. A move like this could also rally the team as well. If Buffalo could get Getzlaf, they could build their team around him, and distribute the burden of goal scoring for the Sabres. Plus Getzlaf is still young, only 26. The benefits of making this trade far outweigh the negative aspects of it.

Regardless of the trades that Buffalo makes over the upcoming month and a half, something has to get the Sabres going. If Buffalo waits until the trade deadline to do something, odds are, it will be too late. Plus, Buffalo’s upcoming schedule is going to be absolutely brutal with traveling to Detroit, Chicago, and St. Louis with a short stay in Winnipeg.

Let’s hope the Sabres do something before it’s too late.

Myers and Boyes for Getz. The only snag is that Darcy would never make a real trade and definately not one before the deadline

They can afford Myers or Getzlaf next year regardless...when contracts expire money comes off the books. Did you think no contracts were expiring? Between Boyes, Hecht, Morissonn, and Gaustad theres 12 million off the books, minus the two million for Morrison cuz he's in the minors, their cap situation calls for roughly 10 million in space next year w/ Gaustad, Ennis, and Kaleta to resign

I heard the kings wanting to move jack Johnson for stafford, don't know if there's any truth to it but if u could move stafford for Johnson, dealing Myers for getzlaf is a little easier as u have Johnson who can fill in void Myers would leave on the back end. Probably won't happen tho as we all know Darcy

GM's can make any trade work they just have to be willing to part with players which Darcy Regier always is very reluctant to do.
