Yesterday, the long awaited opening night of the new National Hockey League season finally got underway. Three great games involving six great teams. The Former Cup Champions and the very team they beat. Two of Canada’s biggest teams went head to head. And the duo from Pennsylvania both scored big wins as well. A great way to start the year off indeed.
If last nights few games proved anything to hockey fans all around, it’s that the Eastern Conference is gonna be as competitive as ever. The Western conference tonight will show us exactly what they can do with only Vancouver getting ice-time yesterday. For anyone attempting to predict the 16 teams who will play in April, it’ll be a long-shot to get them all correct. I’ve given my early predictions for a few teams already, but now I’m putting them all together.

There you have it. The 2011-12 Stanley Cup Champions will be the new-look Philadelphia Flyers. Lead by the storm of JVR, Jagr, and Giroux, the Flyers will do something no other team has ever done before. Play 28 Stanley Cup Playoff games in one year. Each series going the limit and each series ending with a Flyers win. Expect Brayden Schenn to get the last laugh scoring the biggest goal of the series. Wayne Simmonds will be this seasons Brad Marchand, and an angered Mike Richards will once again go home empty-handed for the second time in three seasons.
One of the biggest events the NHL holds every year is the Awards Ceremony. There is no better way of ending a season then to have Jay Mohr spit some NHL jokes in a great fashion. Mix that in with plenty of NHL stars and a lot of hardware, and you’ve got yourself a great two-hour show to supply you with some medicine for your Stanley Cup hangover. The award predictions for this season will follow after a list of last seasons winner.

Your on glue if you think the Flames will finish that low in the west.
i can c the flames being in the bottom 6 in the league this year, cant wait till the fire sale in the new year for that team .
i would virtually transpose Nashville and St. Louis. And Halak and Rinne. I love Halak, but Rinne is the BOMB. And with Weber and Suter and Klein and Blum in front of him, Nashville is going to be a factor this year. I think St. Lous is everyone's fair-haired boy this year. It's really kind of (at best) a middling defense. Their young forwards are promising to very good. But they have proven nothing yet.
I agree with Jaeckel. St. Louis won't be able to claw out of the cellar with a bunch of expensive acquisitions. They'll need time to "gel." Nashville's chances are better than Colorado's as well. They've been to the second round last year...they tasted it...they're hungry.
I like St. Louis, but I think at best the claw in to one of the bottom three playoff seeds. Basically for the the reasons JJ mentioned, but also because while they have three pretty solid forward lines, none of their forwards are above second tier. There's no Datsyuk or Zetterberg, no Toews, Kane, or Hossa; maybe not even a Sharp or a Franzen.
