Forget my initial opening for this. I’m currently hiding with my father, from the baby shower (for my sister), which is taking place beneath our feet. We currently have plenty of beer in a snow bank outside to keep it cold because the fridge is in the middle of the party, and there’s no way that we’re going down there.
Why am I here? Few reasons; playoff football at 4:30, and my parents have the biggest TV in the family. The other reason, we need to figure out what we’re going to do with our minipack for the Sabres after the baby shower.
Enough of that, and to the point of this blog. I’ve thought long and hard about what I want to do with this blog for the upcoming Sabres season. I wanted to write this before the schedule was released. I hope that this can be a little more about my style, and what you can expect if you follow me this season of NHL hockey.
I’ve been a hockey fan since birth. I thank my grandfather for getting me interested in hockey. I’ve always been a fan of the Sabres. I’ve said this in several blogs before, I will always be a Sabres fan, and I am proud to wear blue and gold (black, red, and white for a brief period of time). No matter how frustrated I get with them, I still root for them, and I always will.
However, when does being a fan intersect with writing a blog about the team? This was something I struggled with in college when I was the play-by-play man for radio broadcasts at my college, SUNY Fredonia. I didn’t want to sound like just a pro SUNY Fredonia fan. What happens when my team gets blown out of the water? “Wow, Fredonia is losing 8-0, but (insert player) really made some great passes tonight! He’s so awesome!” Who wants that? It’s not real, and it’s just nonsensical rambling. No one wants to read that.
What I hope to do, is write fairly non-biased blogs about the Sabres, and the NHL. I plan on writing recaps following several games (I may miss some here and there), as well as thoughts about several issues that arise during the season. If Buffalo looks bad, or a certain player makes some bad plays, you’re going to hear about it. If Buffalo looks great, you’re going to hear it. Yes, opinion will be involved, but that’s what this is. I will also cover Rochester games when I can go to see one. Which brings me to my final point...
I joined hockeybuzz.com in order to engage in discussions about the NHL, and specifically the Sabres. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen anymore (at least for the Sabres). I propose this, I will open up my comment board to discussions. I want to engage with other fans. I want to get into friendly debates about certain players, trades, what contributed to a loss, and things of that nature.
I can only speak for myself, but I will try to respond to any questions or comments (unless they’re off color or inappropriate). It may not be right away, but I’ll do the best I can. Also, feel free to message me any questions, or anything you’d like me to give my opinion. I’d be more than happy to write about any topics, or thoughts that others have. While you may not agree with my opinion, that’s fine. Share your thoughts, and let’s take it from there!
I generally put up 2-4 blogs a week, pending on what’s going on. Look for a Sabres season preview coming up in the next day or two, after the schedule has been released. I hope to continue to try to provide unbiased (as possible) Sabres coverage this year, and my thoughts on how the season is going. I won’t have breaking news. I, like the rest of you, rely on NHL.com or (for Buffalo fans) WGR.
We’re all united by our love of hockey, and our loyalty to our favorite teams! I know we’re all looking forward to puck drop 2013. Enjoy everyone, and thanks for reading!
