Attention Real Estate Agents. Soupy's can will soon be ready for showing. ( Bad pun, oh well must be tired)
Lets face it Sabre fans Campbell is as good as gone. Did anyone catch his comments today after practice?
http://eod.liquidviewer.c...wgr/20080219_campbell.wma He is truly a dejected individual. He has been a roller coster of emotions for the past few weeks. And who could really blame him? First he breaks off talks with the team, then wants to be a Sabre then there is today. There are thoughts by some he wants to be a Sabre next Wednesday and beyond. He even has said that himself. ( Atleast publically) Or is it just a show to put some more mud on the Sabres braintrust ( Regier & Quinn) face? I believe he is a goner. If not Tuesday then July 1st for sure.
I have been told by a source who knows Brian he is as good as gone. I was even told he doesn't feel like the Sabres are committed to winning anymore. I wonder if the team just letting guys like McKee, Dumont, Grier, Zubrus, Briere & Drury leave for nothing has something to do with that. Or was it the teams lack of filling those voids via the Free-Agent Frenzy that was last July 1? If what I was wold is correct & I were Soupy i would feel that way as well.
Sabres brass should HOPEFULLY learn from their recent & frequent misfortunes and get while the gettins good. Trade Campbell NOW. Get prospects, picks & bodies for the future. Lets not forget the relationship with Rochester is nearly over and they have to fill a full minor league roster next season.
Honestly can they even afford to keep Brian past this season? Lets remember they need to get Miller extended as fast as possible. And in the wake of the Lunqvist signing, signing Soupy to a contract even close to that of Dion Phaneuf makes that really tough. The Sabres need to look no further than Wednesdays opp. to see what locking up 3-4 players to big time contracts will do to a team. Tampa Bay has a huge chucnk of the cap locked up in Vinny, Brad, Martin & Dan. They are a shell of the 2003-04 team that won it all. I'm not saying they can't win a cup if they do sign Campbell to a big deal and keep him. But what happens if they do and then have problems in 2 years (or less) in filling out their roster?
For the good of the team MR. QUINN let Darcy do his fricking job already. You have already messed up this franchise once. Please dont do it again. Why dont you concentrate your efforts on developing the waterfront.
We'd LOVE to have him in CHI-town! Hopefully, there is something to be had there...
I have not been impressed how BC has handled this entire situation and now I want him gone. He should provide a great return and who knows perhaps ridding ourselves of the distraction will improve some other individuals play. I totally agree in regards to Quinn letting Darcy do what he is paid to do.
In my opinion, Campbell is not the best defemseman on this team.Tallinder is. then Lydman and Spacek and Campbell all bounce around the 2- 4 postion. Will we pay each top 4 defenseman $5-6million, plus Miller $7 million, plus Vanek, Hecht and Roy...Suddenly we are over $35.Now what about Paille, Gaustad, Stafford, Kennedy, Pominville, Sekera, Macarthur who of these guys must go......that means Kotalik, Kalinen,Connolly,Max are gone for sure. Give Kalinen a 3 yer extension worth $9million and same for Spacek, instead of giving Campbell $6million.......the two as a pair are better than Campbell IMO
he can leave as far as im concerned. his 2 trips to the all star game have been nice, but he's not the brian campbell i knew years ago in rochester. hes developed into someone different. hearing some of his comments lately, it's almost like he cares more about himself than this team. we dont need a self-centered all-star on this team. (that's one reason i miss Danny B. because he was anything but that, he was all about the team.) we need a team. buffalo is not a place for stars and it never will be. it's time for him to move on.
btw thanks for posting the audio - i hadnt heard this yet today, i appreciate it. only adds to my thoughts. it's definitely time for him to move on
Campbell to Chicago could happen. Here's why: whether it's to bolster their slim playoff hopes now, or to help complete the picture for next year, the Hawks could use Campbell. Yes, you pay more for him now in terms of players/picks going the other way. But you also guarantee you get your guy, and Tallon has had interest in Campbell all season (supposedly). I could definitely see Ruutu (who probably could use a change of scenery), maybe Skille or Brouwer going the other way.
If what you say is correct and he doesn't feel the team is committed to winning anymore...then trade him as fast as you can. We really don't need another Hasek saga to start up again.
Last year I would say that Tallinder and Lydman were our two best D-men. This year they both haven't played nearly as well. I would have to put Campbell as the top guy, then Tallinder, Spacek, Lydman, Pratt and I guess Kalinen. All you really have to look at is average ice time. Campbell is on the ice over 25 minutes a game while Tallinder and Lydman are on about 21 minutes a game.
Trade the Flying Tomato and get something good in return....this team needs a 1B Centerman and tougher defense. Campbell has more value to the Sabres as tradebait. Its ridiculous to believe the Sabres management isn't committed to winning.....maybe if the teams salary was the lowest in the league but its not...they are spending alot of $$$.
If he is gone I fear Buffalo will make an offer sheet to Joni Pitkanen this summer as buffalo will be in need of a puck moving defenseman. I guess Buffalo will be able to make due on their threats to Edmonton.
I agree with Siket, trade him now. IMO he brought a lot of this on himself by being greedy, and he is being a dick if he says management is not committed to winning. His wanting more than 5 per is a saying he is more important than the team winning (i.e. being able to retain other important pieces in the future). Sorry, our team winning is not determined on Soup alone. There are more important pieces IMO.
I would want the Sabres to touch Pitkanen with a 10 foot pole. No thanks. They'll be a better way for the Sabres to stick it to the Oilers for making us overpay for Vanek.
Wouldn't. Forgot the n't.
Dan Boyle anyone?
Campbell would bring a HUGE return. Trade him before it's too late, losing him for nothing like Briere and Drury would be too heartbreaking. Dan Boyle is available, he'd be a nice replacement, adding key veteran leadership to the mix as well. Great blog, SC.
Honestly, this trade to me symbolizes just how much Buffalo wants to win. Buffalo knows what hes capable of, and they know the price he wants doesnt merit what he brings to the table.Maybe what happened with Briere and Drury didnt symbolize wanting to win, but this to me does. They trade him and save the money to sign guys like Miller, Pominville, Stafford, and Spacek. Guys who IMO, are more important pieces to a winning team. If he wants to sign for 5.5, let him stay. But anything more, get what you can for him and continue building a strong core.
Drury and Briere were highly overpaid! In todays market Campbell is probably worth 6 Million but i underdtand why they cannot pay it. I love how all these guys who can't get monster contracts say the team is not committed to winning. It is laughable. I for one love Nathan Paetsch and hopefully he will blossom once Campbell is traded. Hopefully it is today because Campbell has been awful the last few games!
Let's look at it like this: Campbell gets traded for some much-needed prospects, who's the defense? Tallinder-Lydman, Pratt-Kalinin, Spacek-Paetsch, with Weber and Sekera both ready to come in. We may want to look at a (cheaper) FA on D this summer, but to keep this train moving we need _______ (insert farm team here) to be strong. I completely agree that the saved money will be crucial for taking care of our RFAs and extending Miller.
WOW thanks for the responses guys. They need to build the farm next year. Guys wh might make the jump from prospects to pros are: Tim Kenedy, Andrew Orpik, Nathan Gerbe
i was hoping to keep him, then i saw the phaneuf contract. i don't think he's half of dion phaneuf, but some team will pay him that much. as much as i like the history of the sabres always having a great skating defenseman like housley-zhitnik-campbell, i can't justify 6 million. not when you HAVE to pay miller very close to lundquist money. not to mention pominville is in this boat next year too, and what is a 70-ish point guy worth on the open market? i like the skille-barker rumor, i would love it if that could include yanic perrault so we can win some faceoffs in the playoffs. i have no need for tuomo ruutu with pat kaleta here. i like the spot darcy is in, he's got a wonderful track record in winning trades. gratton for briere, grosek for dumont AND gilmour? the more i look at it, darcy swings campbell for skille, barker, perrault, and a pick. i just hope the sabres have a fax machine repair guy on hand all day tuesday.
Brian who? He really isn't that good. The him go. Hockey isn't about defense anymore; anyway. If you have a great goalie, and we do, a mediocre defense can be sufficient. As someone once said: "The best defense is offense."
