Game 3...Flyers/Habs

Posted 10:08 AM ET | Comments 15
Thank god for DVR...because I got to see all of the important stuff...

Let me just start off by saying I'm sick of hearing that the flyers are dirty. At the beginning of the season a couple players made some bad decisions. It cost us big time. Game over. We did our time. It's the end, and I don't want to hear about it anymore b/c it's irrelevent. The Flyers are not "dirty".

Moving right along now to my second issue. Diving. I'm sick of it. In every series. I've bad-mouthed Crosby up and down these message boards for it but last night's performance by Price was pretty bad. Habs fan or Flyers fan...it is very clear and if you don't believe me...cehck the slow motion...

Pathetic. There's no place for it in this sport. And I mean for any team b/c I would be pissed if Biron had pulled that poop too (plus he probably would have been called). The fact is Price knew he was caught with Kapenen coming around the other side of the net. So what does he do? He falls as if he's been hit by a bus. We all know Downie is capable of some pretty rough stuff but I think that after all the penalties (in the few minutes he's played) he's had a severe talking to and is a little more in line. It was a dive and Downie was on the receiving end of a beat down for it.

I was not happy about Montreal having a power play after that. Overall I was not happy with the fact that the penalties were 9-5. Really? The Flyers (who led by 3) were taking the penalties. That sounds a little backwards to me. I find it hard to believe that Montreal didn't pull some of the things that we were called for.

Hatcher, you're an idiot for doing that with a 3 goal lead in the third. Penalty-yes. Major- no. Initially Hatcher was told he was getting two minutes. When they saw the blood it should have been 4. Penalties are supposed to be called by what happened not by the complaining of a coach. Only the Flyers. I'd like to see a major handed to another team for the same thing. Bull. It was a bad call and the moment an official shows taht they can be swayed by a coach or player's argument is the moment they lose their authority in the game.

On the other end, the hit on Umbergers knee was not cool. You can't go for a players legs. And going for a player with a recent injury is just really a bit much. If Richards had that kneeing penalty in game one, what exactly was this? Hip to knee contact. I would call it intention to injure. But it wasn't called.

Be that as it may, the Flyers did their best to kill of the many Montreal powerplays and with 20 blocked shots I would say they had a pretty stellar overall PK performance. Biron was stellar once again. Price was not...once again. I gave Price the benefit of the doubt in the first two games. It looked like he was having a rough start but it also looked like his defense was asleep. In that third period though it looked like the Flyers were scoring at will.

Upshall's shot was very very good. It was a great play by Lupul and Upshall really used the screen but at the same time Upshall was out far enough that Price should have at least gotten a piece of it.

Richards, oh Richards. I turned to my sister and said "What do you think about a Mike Richards short handed goal?" "I think it could happen" was her response. And it did. Just moments after our exchange he was on the ice for the PK. Skates down.

"Hey wouldn't it be funny if..."

Bam! In the net. Almost from the blue line. What happened Cary?

That was quite a kick for the Flyers and to finish off an exciting period. Umberger put away a rebound. I know that the commentators blamed Price saying it was a soft shot. I beg to differ though. It was a good shot and the defense wasn't there to get the rebound.

The Flyers defense, and forwards on the other end seemed to really be in the right place at the right time and they pounced on rebounds. Biron was awesome stopping 32 of 34 shots. And the Flyers forwards were awesome scoring on 3 of 14 shots.

14 shots though, come on guys, I know you can do better. And two shots in the third is just unacceptable. Even if you are killing off a major for the first part.

Kudos to the Flyers for actually coming out after the game and challenging the refs. There have been many times where they could have thrown around accusations this season but they didn't (for the most part). But I though they were justified in what they had to say.

A quick shout out to Prospal. Hey, your team is in the second round now. This is still the playoffs. Where the heck are you? He really needs to pick up his game a little bit more.

As far as other offense, Upshall should apparently always be shooting from the point. Interesting but that line was phenomenal last night as they have been throughout the playoffs and the end of the season. In any case, I'm looking forward to the return of Knuble.

The Flyers have yet to play their best hockey, but I would say, the Candiens haven't either. Next game should be interesting. I hope that there will over all be less penalties. Just let them play. Okay I'm done for now. More after tonight's games.

All good points...but watch out...everyone else will attack you...the refs have been bad since round 1 in all the playoffs..oh wait when have they been good?but, really enough of the ref talk. The team that battles through adversity and scores the most goals will win the series.

Great job on the slow motion. Not only did he dive, but he made sure to pull his helmet off to automatically stop play. To anyone that is really honest, Downie was going for the puck. Amazing that the Flyers ended up shorthanded after that play.

We can't talk too much about diving, Upshall is the worst. Hatcher made a great comment after the game. He said something to the effect of "I wish I didn't let up, if I knew I was getting 5 minutes I would have finished it."

Dive, he got he foot taken out from him from behind. It was accidental contact that resulted in a penalty, blame the rule, not the player.... and if you don't think you are dirty, what about Richards little punch to the head of Halak in the 3rd? Richards is better than that, but Bobby Clarke obviously influences him heavily....

this is what i'm talking about. I said i'm sick of the "dirty" talk. Every team does dirty stuff at times. You hit our goalie too. Suck it up. This is hockey. And LOOK AT THE VIDEO. DIVE! it's soooooo clear...

look viper. if you want to keep the he said/she said up. Biron was bumped into quite a few times in this series. The flyers didn't make a big deal out of it. Price embellished. Find a sports site that doesn't agree. Look at the slow motion video. If he was hit as hard as he made it seem then he would have gone down immediately. Not when he saw Kapenen flying up the other side. Those 3 goals on 10 shots in the second. I think that was just a little Karma coming back to Price.

we'll see if your Karma philosophy is true.... if so, I feel bad for what is gonna happen to Richards
April 29, 2008 1:57 PM ET | Delete
viper id say karma is served already. game 1 he was called for a kneeing penalty that wasnt, then he doesnt get called in game 3 for something that should have beem
April 29, 2008 1:58 PM ET | Delete
It wasn't? his knee didn't make contact, I agree, but he stuck it out there, intending to knee him

Can't penalize on intentions. Richards caught him full on with his shoulder, yet was still penalized. Dirty = Kostopolous = Plekanic sticking his rear-end out to clip Umberger = 2 players swinging at Downie after he trips Price. Please, don't act superior. 6'5" Hatcher buries 5'8" Bouillon, who is up against the boards, and gets a 5 minute major...that's a joke. Not 5 minutes before that, Richards took the exact same hit...no call. Be thankful you're still in this series due to all the gifts the Habs have received.

The Flyers are watched very closely by the officials because of the style of game they choose to play and because of the incidents that occurred early in the season. They do seem to get called for things that most teams wouldn't be, but once again that is the rough and tough style they want to play! You make your bed you lay in it!I am a huge Flyers fan and I know they are on the short end of a lot of calls. I think it is rubbish , but not totally unexpected. I love that they brought back the rough and tumble style of hockey that is very fun to watch in a league where the big brass wants everybody to play like Sidney Crosby. They created the "new" NHL for Crosby! BUT the Flyers are taking it back! What I can't understand is how the Habs fans can complain about anything. They have had far more powerplay time! The Mike Richards taunt on Halak. Big deal! He barely touched him and the guy is wearing a goalie helmet/mask. What damage did it do other than to his ego? None. The Habs fans are just upset about their weak Euro-players not being tough enough to stick up for their own. Nothing will happen to RIchards because there is nobody on Montreal tough enough to do anything to him!The Flayers are playing their game and Montreal can't handle it even while spending a lot of time with the man advantage. Montreal has to capitalize on their chances like the Flyers are or this series will be over very quickly! The Habs are very lucky not to be down 3 - 0 at this point!Stop complaining about the team you are playing against and look at your own team for a change!

thank you. nothing will happen to richards because he hasn't done anything that other players (both teams) haven't done. Everyones had their little pokes at players or goalies. Price just got what he had coming for a FAKE penalty. Downie got his ass kicked by two players who thought taht Downie had laid Price out AND he got the penalty. That is karma for Price.

Viper...I hope your coach has the flu the rest of the year. I hope Price's hand is really broke because if it isn't he really sucks catching pucks. I hope your captains gets hurt again too. All the things listed above are the usually classless comments that get thrown out on a daily basis. Don't take them to heart. All the references about who's going to hurt who is dumb and classless. Talk about the game and what you want to see happen. Playoff hockey is tough. Oh, and your boy Kovie moved that's why it "appeared" to look like Richards was out to knee him. Most knee to knee hits are accidents becasue the player that is about to get hit tries to move out of the way.
