I've been waiting nearly a week for some sort of substantive signing by the Bruins. Wondering when Free Agency would BEGIN for them? Get it BEGIN? As in Steve Begin they're lone signing whom wasn't in the organization last season.
So what do I get? Dany Sabourin...boy people say that they never saw the Gomez trade to Montreal coming. Now I'm really besides myself and that's a lot of me!!!
Anyway, I can't for the life of me understand why a team that is pressed up against the cap would sign another goaltender when Tuuka Rask is clearly going to be and should be the backup to Tim Thomas!!! What kind of message does that send to Tuuka? I mean I'm all for healthy competition don't get me wrong here. I'm all for what Brian Burke said today in his press conference about players not being challenged enough for their spot in the lineup. Depth in your organization is a great thing, but when you have Kevin Regan (an RFA), Adam Chourchaine, Mike Hutchinson and former Bemidji State Goalie Matt Dalton signed and ready to compete for a job in Providence, there will clearly be an influx of Goaltenders in the Bruins camp this September. Well you can add Sabourin to that list now and I hope he makes Timmy and Tuuka better for it!
The signing of Drew Fata doesn't bother me at all, you can never have enough players in the AHL with some NHL seasoning, especially when you have a defence that has messers Ward and Ference as part of your starting six. You know those boys will be banged up a plenty come next season and whether its Johnny Boychuk, Dennis Reul or Yuri Alexandrov getting the call up, Fata will get increased ice time in Providence.
So the only earth shattering effect that these signing have is on the cap, the Bruins with very little in the way of available cap space to offer Kessel, Hunwick, Yelle, Axelsson and Regan now almost certainly need to move some players off the roster in order to move foward with their free agents let alone anyone else's.
This is why these moves today all the more leave me scratching my head with a hacksaw
