Flyers Vs. Pens

Posted 7:59 PM ET | Comments 27
I have a question to all the Pens fans. Instead of sitting here typing about Goalies, Depth, and Scoring touch.
I want to know if any Pen Fans believe the Flyers have a chance to win.

It will be interesting to read all the responses.

That is a very good question. My heart wants to say no but after seeing how the flyers have played in the last month, its might be a close series. Its going to come down to Biron. I disliked the guy going into the season, but now I have the utmost respect for him.

Wow sorry my english is awful. To correct myself it should be a very close series.

of course they have a chance. They are certainly the underdog but bigger upsets have happened this year, last year, all the time. I really just felt that whomever the winner of NYR vs PITTS was would make the finals. Both Philly and Montreal are lesser teams.Should be a close series. GL!

Although I am not a Pens fan (more of a Crosby fan) I beleive the Pens will handle the flyers in 5 games. This will of course anger flyers fans but in my opinion the only reason they won the last round was Biron. People forget even as a Sabre he more or less owned the Habs and it simply continued in the playoffs. The flyers were outplayed and outshot in almost every game in that series. Against the capitals they just survived. ( a bad call ended the game in OT) The pens are a more balanced team than any the flyers have faced to date and I that Biron played his best hockey against the Habs and the Pens highly skilled forward will get to him in a hurray. The Pens are a young team but also have a very good mix of more experience players who play a very valuable role. ( Gill, Gounchar(sp?) Roberts just to name a few) Don't forget they also have big George L. who won't let the flyers take the same liberties they got away with in the previous series. Pens in 5

montreal is a lesser team than pittsburgh?

keep dreaming habs 12 but here's a thought for you...if price had played the way biron did you would have had a prayer. He didn't everyone says "they didn't deserve it...they were outplayed" ect....but Biron was not outplayed and being outplayed means you lose. If we didn't give up the goals we weren't out played. Shots on goal don't matter as much as those that end up in the net. Now where do you get off saying the pens are a more balanced team...we have 11 forwards and 1 defenseman that have scored at least one goal so far. Umberger had 8 in the series against the habs. Briere is still playing well. What about Richards, hartnell, prospal, carter, upshall, knuble? Last time I checked Pittsburgh has Hossa, Crosby and Malkin (who is better than Crosby this season and in the playoffs). They have other players who score sporatically but anyone who says the pens have more depth must not have watched the flyers in the playoffs yet.

Calm down boys. Flyers will win this cause the pens are just a bunch of Bettman hype. Crosby is not the some coming of Gretzky people.

Opps sorry should have read second coming of Gretzky.

sm623181 Typical flyers fan, 1st of all being outplayed doesn't mean you lose. A hot goalie has beat better teams in many a series. Umberger had a very good round lets see what he has for the Pens before you Knight him.(Don't recall him being a driving force in the Cap's series) You seem to be hanging your hat on the fact the Pen's haven't produced and you have... Keep in mind how many games you have played vs the number of games they have. Pens in 5

The Penguins played two depleted teams. I realize Jagr and Lundqvist are very good, but the Rangers defense has never been stellar this year, Avery went out, Drury was hurt the whole series.. I think the Flyers are better prepared for the Penguins than you realize.

Habs12 your still showing bitterness. Your team has lost, its time to move on. good points everyone, although doesn't all the trash talking get old?
May 7, 2008 9:48 AM ET | Delete
Keep in mind what the flyers greatest weakness is.....Defense..... I also believe that the Biron bubble will burst this round

phi1671...It's really not bitterness...Sometimes the philly fans do get under my skin because some ..not all... are such band wagon fans that clearly can't disect the game with any kind of rational thoughts

I'm not a Pens fan but here is my 2 cents : of course the Flyers have a chance (they are a very good team that is on a nice run), but if I were a betting man my money would be on the Pens in 6.

Hey jackal, one of the main reasons the Rags made it as far as they did was because of their defense. The whole season their offense didn't produce, and thier d kept them in it.
May 7, 2008 12:48 PM ET | Delete
Not only a chance, I see them as the favorite, considering they won the season series and the Pens have never won a playoff series against Philly. And MrSmitty, you're an idiot. Not because of your comment about Crosby. That's true; he is no Gretzkey or Lemieux. But if you think there's some kind of consiracy to put the Pens in the Finals, then why did the Rangers have more power play chances then the Pens? Moron.

I think this is agoing to be a tough series that could go either way. I obviously want the Pens to win, but I think this will be a lot tougher than the previous opponents they faced. This could go to the Flyers, but it is too close to call. I do hope the Pens win and that is likely clouding my judgement. This is going to be a good series.

I absolutely think Philly has a chance here. I don't see Biron pulling a Price. The Philly D is going to have to mind that backside player cuz Pittsburgh loves that quick cross ice feed for an easy tip in. Flyer D can't get sucked in to watching the razzle dazzle on one side of the ice and leaving the backside open. Continue keeping the lane from the point open so Martin can see the puck. Most important, I think, are these 2 points:1 - Stay out of the box. Too many penalties thus far and the Hossa/Crysby/Malkin PP line will crush them if they get to use it too often.2 - Play a full 60 minutes. Against Pittsburgh, the Flyers will not be able to afford to have the ice tilted into their own end as much as they did against Montreal and Washington. They need to level the surface and play a complete game. I honestly don't think we've seen a full out Flyer effort yet this post-season.I think this is going to be a very good series with a lot of great intensity. Philly will get a boost if they can get some early goals and keep pressure on, and if they can do like the Rags and keep Sid from scoring. Ultimately, the question is going to be who will crack first: Biron or Fleury?I can't wait to start watching this bad boy.
May 7, 2008 1:42 PM ET | Delete
I don't know that any goalie will necessarily crack. I think they will both play well consistently. Defense is going to be big as far as being the goalie's support system.
May 7, 2008 1:51 PM ET | Delete
One netminder ultimately has to yield more than other. Their defenses will have to be lower. Thus, by definition, they will crack.
May 7, 2008 1:53 PM ET | Delete
But to go along with that, I'm not knocking either guy. Biron I knew had this in him. Fleury was a big question mark for me when the playoffs started and he has been playing some of the best goaltending I've seen from him.

I'm looking to put 50$ on the Flyers for the series... Any takers?
May 7, 2008 3:20 PM ET | Delete
hank you to all the fans with their honest opinions ...jp/pensfan/33...good stuff...it will be a good series...too bad they gave the whole week to get ready for it...i think this hurts they hype then helps the hype...it does help the wounded
May 7, 2008 3:21 PM ET | Delete
i bet that the folks at espn would take you up on that...
May 7, 2008 4:21 PM ET | Delete
Does ESPN know hockey is no longer locked out?I also hated the week layoff. Not so much for the teams but for me. It's been grueling!
May 7, 2008 4:57 PM ET | Delete
have you ever read burnside's writeups...they are horrendous...so embarassing to sports writing...and hockey in general really...espn's picks have been hilarious all playoffs...
May 8, 2008 9:25 AM ET | Delete
jphiggins I never said their was a conspiracy. I said they are all Bettman Hype meaning they are just overrated. The flyers are a tough well rounded team lead by a great captain. The only thing that could lose it for the flyers is their goaltending. Can Biron maintain his brilliance is the biggest question.
