Stars update. The Penguins' Evgeni Malkin and Crosby have combined for 12 points (five goals, seven assists), while Jeff Carter and Mike Richards have three points (two goals, one assist).

I like this stat…
It shows the dependence one team has on there star players versus the balance of depth the other team has within their top lines.
Agree or disagree?

It also reminds me of Ovie and the Caps. If Ovie gets injured I don't know if the Capitals have enough balance and fire power.

it shows me how when you have GREAT players, you beat teams that have a bunch of average players. 2-6 in the last 8 playoff games against Pitt?? wouldnt be bragging boss

Shhh! Your gonna upset the Pens fans! They don't like when people talk about the lack of depth on their team!
April 21, 2009 2:19 PM ET | Delete
Seriously though, I agree with your assessment. Take either of the league leading assist producers off the Pens and there secondary become much weaker - from a scoring stand point. Take a guy like Richards from the Flyers and it hurts, just not as badly. That said, I think a lot of the Pens secondary players are very sound defensively.

This was an opinion blog...don't know where you got the bragging from? But thanks for the senseless post...

April 21, 2009 2:42 PM ET | Delete
its NOT senseless...the only reason the Flyers dont rely on a few superstars is because THEY DONT HAVE THEM. The Pens are using the same formula as when they won their cups...which the Flyers havent in 30 years. Dont think for a second if the trade was Richards, Carter, Giroux, Briere, and Gagne for Sid, Geno, Stall, and Kuntiz that the Flyers wouldnt make that trade in a second..THEY WOULD
April 21, 2009 2:43 PM ET | Delete
you make it sound like these are two different paths to success...yet..I see no success from the Flyers.
April 21, 2009 2:54 PM ET | Delete
Stop thinking Thunder your embarrassing yourself like always
April 21, 2009 3:03 PM ET | Delete
Thunder - are you implying that the way the Redwings are built does not win cups? Now, I'm not implying that the Flyers are the dominant force that the Wings are but they also rely heavily on depth. Arguably, the Flyers have the pieces (and prospects) in place to be as dominant as the wings one day after some of the very young team develops further. Ironically, the Flyers are pretty well matched with the Pens today, aren't they, Homer?
April 21, 2009 3:08 PM ET | Delete
And the only reason that the Flyers don't have 2 superstars is because they didn't suck for years.
April 21, 2009 3:15 PM ET | Delete
Care to tell me the last time the Red Wings won the cup without super stars?? Zetty, Datysuk, Lidstrom, Hasek, Yzerman, Federov, Fetisov, Larry Murphy.Whew....thats 8 players that are better than anyone the Flyers got right now....Id say they were built more like PITTS than Philly. Pitts doesnt have depth? Funny..I thought the Staal line WON game 1
April 21, 2009 3:16 PM ET | Delete
but being a Flyers fan..Im sure youll say the REFS gave the Pens game one because Bettman wants Crosby in the Finals
April 21, 2009 3:33 PM ET | Delete
Richards, Carter, and other young Flyers have the potential to be just as effective as Dats, Zets, and company. The Flyers have a slew of other prospects Parent and Sbisa are just a few. Like I said - they are not the Redwings but are built more like them: from a standpoint of potential, that is, and future possibility. Zets and Dats are not on the same level of Superstardom that Crosby and Malkin are, just as no current Flyer will ever be but they can be.
April 21, 2009 3:36 PM ET | Delete
No, I don't think the refs gave the Pens game one. The Flyers lost game one and two all by themselves. The Pens are a very good team and play very good consistently. The Flyers are a better team that does not play at the top of there game consistently and often takes dumb penalties. If the Flyers play the rest of the series at the top of their game they will beat the Pens.
April 21, 2009 3:39 PM ET | Delete
But I ask you again, Thunder. If the Pens have built a team that is so much better then the Flyers why are the Flyers so much trouble to them? Why at the end of this series will the winner have fought hard to make it out of the first round if the Pens are so far superior.
April 21, 2009 3:41 PM ET | Delete
Edit to 1st of the three posts ".. but the can be just as good as the Wings one day". Was how that was supposed to read.
April 21, 2009 4:00 PM ET | Delete
youre insane.....1. only a flyers fan can say that the FLyers are like the Red Wings...they are indeed....except for all the Cups and Hall of Famers.2. The Flyers are trouble for the Pens??? They won the series last year 4-1 and are on schedule for doing the same this year...winning series 8-2 really isnt trouble...3. "The Flyers are a better team that does not play at the top of there game consistently and often takes dumb penalties"....the single most stupid thing IVe ever read on hockeybuzz.

How's that Vanek contract working out for you?
April 21, 2009 4:04 PM ET | Delete
4 of the last 11 Stanley Cups have been awarded to the Detroit Red Wings. 0 of the last 30 have been awarded to the Flyers...youre right..there the same team. THe Flyers are just as good..AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
April 21, 2009 4:09 PM ET | Delete
What does Vanek have to do with the way Pittsburgh handles you guys every year??
April 21, 2009 4:11 PM ET | Delete
I never said the Flyers were the same as the Wings. I was trying to imply that the Wings have built on depth and so have the Flyers. I did say that the Flyers have the potential... because of that depth... to one day have the success of the wings. The pens have are built on a few players and will always be a revolving door. Please take the time to read my posts and don't have your answer ready to go before doing so.

April 21, 2009 4:17 PM ET | Delete
youre right..the Flyers are as good as the Wings. In every way...except those cups and hall of famers
April 21, 2009 4:18 PM ET | Delete
by the way...the Pens "revolving door" got them 2 cups with Mario and Jagr. As it will with Sid and Geno. How many cups has the Flyers depth got them since 1980??

"The Flyers are a better team that does not play at the top of there game consistently and often takes dumb penalties"....the single most stupid thing IVe ever read on hockeybuzz.Well... I suppose it could be argued that "not play at the top of there game consistently and often takes dumb penalties" diminished the "better team" aspect of it. But take that away and the Flyers beat the Pens almost every time.
April 21, 2009 4:24 PM ET | Delete
except the playoff series they are currently in..and of course the playoff series last year

This series is still close and last year has nothing to do with this year. The past has nothing to do with today. I honestly don't know who will win tonight, because both teams, at this point, are very evenly matched. But it is still anyones game because of the current, real time, this day and age status of the teams.
April 21, 2009 4:31 PM ET | Delete
By the way, don't even compare this Pens team to the Pens of the Mario era. Mario's Pens were a much better rounded team. Sid and Geno are good... darn good... but they will spend there careers playing with and making average players better.
April 21, 2009 4:31 PM ET | Delete
right.....nothing has nothing to do with nothing...ergo..The Flyers are every bit as good as the Wings!!
April 21, 2009 4:32 PM ET | Delete
Staal, Kunitz, Gonchar, are hardly average boss.....
April 21, 2009 4:32 PM ET | Delete
Wow, do you really believe that the fact that the Pens won a cup 17 years ago and the Flyers 30 years ago affects todays game?
April 21, 2009 4:35 PM ET | Delete
I'm done debating with you... this is a waste of time... your just taking everything I say out of context and twisting it. Pointless. I'm gonna go have a conversation with pens fans that have reading comprehension skills. Enjoy the game tonight. Don't drink to much.
April 21, 2009 4:37 PM ET | Delete
I dont drink..let me guess...when the Pens beat the Flyers...youre gonna say..."If we would have beaten them we would have rolled right the the Cup"...righ??
April 21, 2009 4:40 PM ET | Delete
I know you said youre done..but JUST so Im CLEAR on your point...the Pens are building their team the wrong way in contrast to the Flyers, even though they beat them last year and are going to beat them THIS year...and the Flyers are just like the Detroit Red Wings right??? Just so Im clear.

I refuse to be silenced..I SHALL BE HEARD
April 21, 2009 4:46 PM ET | Delete
If the Pens beat the Flyers the Pens will have come out of a tough series successfully. Regardless, whichever team wins will likely have much bigger obstacles to face in later rounds. Respond if you want. But I'm done with this... your just looking for a fight and I've let you goad me into one for to long... much like the Flyers did to the Pens in game 3.
April 21, 2009 4:48 PM ET | Delete
I'm attempting to debate with a bannee? Its all becoming clear now. I'll just blame it on that dang Vanek contract.

Interesting stat in the Pitt -Philly series....Pitt - THREE ...Philly - ONE
April 22, 2009 1:55 PM ET | Delete
I have one question for you Thunder. If you had to choose one to keep on the Pens who would it be - Crosby or Malkin?
April 22, 2009 3:19 PM ET | Delete
Malkin. no doubt. The guy is an animal. Wait until he is in his late 20's. Its gonna be TOUGH for the Philly fans to watch the Lindros they never had...
