The Ottawa Senators stormed the Avs in the third period to come away with a 5-3 victory on Thursday night. The Avs' loss came with rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard losing his first career NHL contest in his first appearance.

Earlier in the day the Avs announced starting goalie Semyon Varlamov would be a game-time decision with a groin injury. Reto Berra ultimately ended up starting with Pickard flying in late to back up the Swiss goalie.

It took just 85 seconds for Alex Tanguay to put the Avs up a goal. But just over a minute later Berra had to leave the game after being pushed into the net during a collision.
