Semyon Varlamov. That was the beginning, middle, and end of this 65-minute story.

The Avs lost their fourth overtime game of the season tonight by a 3-2 final. This one went all the way to the shootout. Despite the Sharks seemingly controlling the play for almost the entirety of the first two periods, the Avs managed to come away with a point. They were outshot 51-33 and Varlamov came away with 49 saves, just two shy of an Avalanche record. The record is currently held by his coach, Patrick Roy who had a 51 save effort in a game during the 1997-98 season.

“Yeah pretty easy to say isn’t it,” said Roy. “He was outstanding, he made some incredible saves especially in that moment in the first where we were struggling a lot.”

“I was looking at the shots on net, it was 6-6 or 7-6 and all of a sudden it’s almost 18 to 6 or 7. That part of the game was not pretty for us.”
