The opportunity to join an organization with a young core provides a lot of excitement for newly acquired Avs prospect JT Compher.

The third player acquired in the Ryan O’Reilly blockbuster deal, Compher believes he will “fit right in” with the Avalanche’s young players.

“It’s great anytime you join an organization that’s had success in the past and a lot of good young players on the team,” Compher said. “Obviously with the leadership, Gabe Landeskog is one of the better captains in the league.”

Compher, 20, was drafted 35th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Draft. If he has his way, the newly named Wolverines captain will join Aaron Palushaj, TJ Hensick, and Matt Hunwick as the only Wolverines alumni to suit up for the Avalanche.

David Oliver, the Avs’ Director of Player Development also hails from the Ann Arbor institution.
“I heard from Oliver, he reached out and gave me a call before I went out to camp.”

In case you didn’t know, JT Compher is now a Colorado Avalanche after the Avs traded their 2016 6th round draft pick to acquire him. As it stands right now, the Avs have something like 11 centers on mycardstatement team. That’s insane and means that someone has to be playing wing at some point in time. In my mind, JT Compher has a real opportunity to grab a spot and make an impact right away.
