43.1 Checking from Behind – A check from behind is a check delivered on a player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend himself, and contact is made on the back part of the body
I agree, to a degree, with the suspension of Leino. Pushing the envelope a little bit, given Shanny's track record this season. I've watched the video a lot, Leino does lift his elbow, even if it seems incidental. 1 game, I can go with that.
HOWEVER, if you're going to suspend Leino, then you better suspend Marc-Andre Bourdon from Philly for checking from behind on Gerbe. See the rule above Shanny, or have you forgotten the rules of the NHL? Or, just maybe, you thought that he didn't have any intent to harm. Sound familiar?
I'm fine with suspensions. Even my team getting suspended when it's deserved. HOWEVER, this needs to be even across the NHL. It is not. Ovechkin speared Neal (subtle, and well sold by Ovechkin), but instead, Neal gets nailed with a diving penalty. Personally, I can't stand Neal, and I love watching Ovechkin play, but this is just another example of the biased politics in the NHL. One could argue Ovechkin should be suspended.
Get consistent Shanny. Start treating all players equal. I don't care who does it, send a message to the players, instead of sending mixed messages to them. Otherwise, people will start thinking you have it in for certain teams.
Good post!
you should throw Malkin in their too...INTENT if you don't suspend at least fine them.
Neil* not Neal.
