While Garth is boo-hooing that Pominville was taken too late in the fantasy draft, the rest of us are getting ready for the “game” known as the NHL All-Star Game.
Now, I’m not upset that Buffalo is under represented. There’s not really anyone from Buffalo who deserve to be in the game. Thomas Vanek is the only other Sabre that I could argue should be in the game. No one else from Buffalo deserves to be there.
This is a game for the fans actually at the game, and the kids in the audience. I’m sorry, but an 11-10 final score for a hockey game, isn’t realistic. The last games that were close to being decent All-Star games were in 2003 and 2004(6-5, shoot out, and 6-4). Those games could pass for a realistic games.
I feel sorry for the goaltenders who get to go to the All-Star game as well as the defensemen. It’s a show for all of the offensive players. There will be about 20 goals in the game tomorrow. The defensemen will be unable to play normal defense, and not play the way that they would in a real hockey game. The goalies will be faced with odd man rushes, and breakaways all night long. They don’t really stand a chance.
To be honest, the game is kind of like watching the Sabres this year, except each team will be getting extraordinary shots on goal instead of just the Sabres opponent. (Sorry, pains me to say that).
The only thing that I like about the All-Star game is how it has been set up last year and this year. I love the concept of appointing 2 captains, and having them pick their team. On paper, it’s always intriguing to see teammates playing against each other. It adds a new element to the game. However, instead of playing hard, like one would expect, it’s soft hockey, and there’s not any competition.
How to improve the All-Star game? As much as I would like to keep the current format, I don’t see how they can. I think it would improve the game if there was more meaning to it aside from pride. Go back to East vs West conference. Then, make the winner have home ice for the Stanley Cup Finals. Then, you give the players a reason to compete, to play hard, and maybe have this game be a more realistic hockey game.
Will it happen? I doubt it. This is an excuse for the players to make fancy moves, and have no one challenge them, like in a real hockey game. The game will remain pathetic, and only a chance for the offense to just show off their skills, instead of letting everyone show their skills off.
You're missing the point of the all-star game. Its a game for the fans but also gives those who aren't at the game a chance to rest. It gives those at the games (coaches included) a chance to play in a relaxed atmosphere. The players need this break for the stretch run. If you make this game more competitive and less relaxing you might as well cancel the all-star game because none of the players will want to come.
If you don't like the game don't watch it and get over it. They will never have it decide home ice advantage. That's the lazy idea everyone has. It would not work in hockey because it's too physical to risk it meaning anything. Only thing I like about the All star game is the skills competitions because the players have fun and we get to see them show off a bit.
I agree with the giving the other players a break. As for what you said great lakes, if I watch, it's the skills game. That's the fun bit of it. I find that really entertaining... and it's a hell of a lot better than the game itself.
Making the game worth something, would take the fun out of it for the players, and 99% of the fans... really your complaining that we get to see stars make great plays all game and run the score up on each other? I agree that the skills comp is the best part of the whole thing, and the game is take it or leave it, but theres 82 games per team in the season playoffs that have meaning, who cares if they have one game to just have fun.
the losers should all get a spanking the winners get ice cream
maybe winners get home ice advantage for the winter classic
lol
Numbear say team "alfie" had drafted some Toronto players what do you think the chances are they play hard against team "chara" (detroit) to make sure Toronto gets advantage at the winter classic? I would speculate not hard at all.. But certainly there could be some other things they could do with the weekend to make it cool.
