My Two Cents - Flyers

The Flyers continue to tinker with their roster but most of the pieces are already in place. With the addition of Simon Gagne, if healthy, will make the team a lot better. They have already told him that he needs to come to camp in better shape since that could’ve contributed too his one long outstanding concussion that he had last year.

The forwards remain strong up front although I don’t like the contract signing of Carter. A player and agent says one thing about understanding the team is in cap trouble but then signs for a higher amount to strap the team. Simply a notion I don’t understand. If you want to stay with a team, I’m not asking to take a huge discount but simply pay attention to the type of team you are on. That’s why they had to trade Umberger because of his contract demands.

With an additional year of experience I really didn’t see the need of over hauling the roster this year.

The loss of R.J. Umberger will be felt only in size because with Claude Giroux, you will add more of playmaking ability and speed. Adding Metropolit is subtracting age with someone experienced and a little younger. Basically subtracting Dowd and adding a 34 Metropolit that can do the same role.

On defense they have upgraded as well. I don’t like the contract of Jones because once again they are over paying someone that is still learning the game. But, subtracting Smith, who I liked his grit but not his lack of speed with the addition of Eminger (24 years old) and the new guy Vaananen, a 6-foot-4, 215-pounder, they have added mobility and to be honest with you its more then they had last year. Now, I would’ve loved to see Hatcher retire, his leadership will come in handy and he’s in the final year of his contract. Rathje is done, since he will be placed on LTIR and they finally traded Gauthier because of his salary. This was one of Clarkes last signings and it was during his burn out stage. He lost his focus and that’s why he stepped down.

So, from last year to this year, the Flyers will be a better team. They will have more speed, more mobility and the core remains intact. Sure they have tinkered with some of the parts but the future looks bright in Flyers land. Homer continues to put together a solid squad as he plans to make a run for the cup (short term) and eyes the future (long term).

One addition that has been rumored although a long shot is to sign Shanahan. I would love this signing since they do lack depth at left wing and with his leadership along with being a proven winner, he would be a great addition. But, like I said I’m not holding my breathe.

Take care and enjoy the summer,
Tom

Always liked (respected) Shanny. I'd be first in line for a Shanahan jersey if he finished out his career in the orange and black!

I think Shanny will only come to Philly if he wants to come to philly. I don't see homer offerring anything else other than matching Salary and being on a Very good Hockey team with a legitamate shot at the cup. I think Shanny will resign in NY, The Rangers are VERY short at wing especially with Jagr leaving.

Shanahan isn't coming to Philly. I have heard a name that a lot of Flyers fans will not like, and I have heard it from 3 different people now-2 of whom might have actual knowledge. Think Bust....

i still don't get lack of depth at L wing w/ gagne, hartnell, upshall and cote w/ JVR coming after nxt season. it's just a myth made up by a mediocre writer and repeated by a guy who should know better. we lack organizational depth at center on top of being very small. if briere is moved to the wing we'll need more depth there. JVR has been playing C at times @ UNH, but that is where we are lacking up front.we could also use a goalie to bridge the gap bet. marty and desarres.i would have rather paid jones $$ to a guy like barker but the mkt is very tight and hatcher tied homer's hands. now it appears as if hatch will be given a LTIR 'deal he can't refuse'.
