I remember way back when it was the summer of 1994 and I was at my sisters house on a Friday evening. No internet back then...I think I relied soley on NECN's bottom line for Bruins news. The ticker came across that the Whalers had just made an offer sheet to Bruins RFA defensman Glen Wesley!!!
I laughed until I cried...I couldn't run poor old Wes out of town fast enough. I still couldn't forget him missing that yawning net in OT of the 1990 finals. I think that would've been a different series had Boston won that one!

Anyways, I thought Glen had already shown us his best hockey and seemed terribly slower than usual that past season. But Still to the WHALERS? I mean I always that Glen looked a bit like a Walrus, so maybe it was a better fit than I originally imagined. When Harry Sinden and his Corroded brass decided to limp away from the offer I began imaging just who the three draft picks may turn into? Please no, not another Dave Pasin or Ray Podloski or Shane Stevenson. I mean haven't we endured enough failure? Can't Jim Ferguson just give us Brendan Shanahan straight up? I mean he was supposed to be a Bruin anyways if Vancouver had just finished 2nd worst overall instead of 3rd. Make everything in the world right again and give us Shanny!!!

Oh wait...seemed like a great thought, but Shanny wouldn't be a Whaler until the following season, so I guess we'll take our chances with the picks cause there's nobody else on that roster that I'd want to be a Bruin!!!

The deal to walk away ended up one of Sinden's greatest achievements other than Cam Neely. We ended up with a pretty darn good defensman in Kyle McKlaren, an pretty good disappointment in Johnathan Aitken and one of the most talented Bruins forwards in a long long time in Sergei Samsonov!!!
Like Meatloaf said two outta three aint bad...Sergei was Electric and Kyle was rock solid on a blueline that sorely needed some punch to help #77 out night after night.

I can't say that I have deja vu all over again with the recent rumors of Phil Kessel being signed to an offer sheet. The number one suspect is Brian Burke and the Toronto Mapleleafs. The main reason is obvious...I don't think Boston has had a scorer as dynamic as Kessel in a long long time. I have said this for two seasons now and have supported Phil the Thrill to no end. I am not going to regurgitate information here. I will just say that 3 draft picks won't ease the pain here like it did in the Wesley deal.
I know that Boston has had much better success in the draft the last several seasons and I'm sure that Chirarelli's staff would find a gem here or there, but how often does a player of Kessel's caliber come along? I'm not sure and I would hate to bet on Lightning striking twice.

Not to mention you're dealing with a division rival again in this potential offer. I could see it all over again...another embarrassing drubbing at the hands of the Leafs 10-2 and Kessel shattering Sittler's record against the Bruins for points in a single game.

That's what PC should say...if Burke comes with an offer, match it. Then you have two plus weeks to figure out who else you're going to move.
Because if Kessel goes...I think the scoring depth goes out the window. The Bruins are better suited dealing from a position of strength and that position is center to fit Kessel's contract in and make the necessary cap alterations by 10/1.

Not a sniper who comes along once a decade!!!
