...I've read alot of complaints on all teams in the playoffs so far.

...Really the only series have serious second round involvement in has been the Flyers/Habs and I can say that there has been some pretty one sided officiating. Montreal has had almost twice as many power plays. Am I to belive that while we were in the lead we were taking careless penalties all game...no I don't think so. I have heard arguments that it only works out to be an extra 2.5 minutes a game of PP time for Montreal. That doesn't seem like a lot but when you consider that Montreal had the number one power play in the elague this season and that Philly's PK isn't exactly the best, it makes a big difference. Not to mention the time it takes away from our attack.

But enough about that series.

In general, I have seen alot of bad calls made, alot of one sided games...a lot of goals called that shouldn't have been goals. If it's not a goal yuo have to reverse it, I know it might hurt the refs pride or something but just do it. All I can say is that there must be some serious boozing going on in the war room. That or they have a dart board one side says "goal" the other "no goal" and they just throw it blindfolded. Or perhaps both are going on. Either way there is no consistency between their what is a goal and what is a no-goal/goalie interference call. What exactly are the guidelines here because I'm not picking up on any kind of consistency.

Which brings me to my final point...

The Pittsburgh Penguins. Let me begin by saying that going into the playoffs the New York Rangers were my least favorite team. I wanted to see them out first round (especially after the Avery rule). They advanced. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh was busy sweeping Ottawa and "drawing penalties". Now, hear me out. I had some serious ties to the city from living there for a while, but watching the cheap play of the team this year was just a disgrace. I have no respect for a team that teaches diving as if it were a skill. That is not "drawing a penalty". Drawing a penalty is when your SKILL and SPEED cause a defensman or forward to find a way to slow you down by taking a penalty.

I have seen Pittsburgh go flying from a tap on the skates. I have seen players be ripped in an immitation of figure skating by a slight tap hook to the waist. I have seen players fall the the ice feigning complete agony at the slightest tap. I have seen a player skate into another players leg or stick and the player on the recieving end of that hit get called for "tripping". Do you see this sh*t in any other series besides on the Pens are involved in. It's a pathetic display of unsportsmanlike conduct that is continually rewarded.

George Laraque who is a well known dirty player recieved a minor fine this season after boarding Downie the same play for which our players were suspended for lengthy time periods. As if that were Laraque's first infraction. I have seen Gonchar butt-end Hartnell in the face with the end of his stick, and no call despite the fact that the refs were looking and hartnell was bleeding profusely. I have seen Ruutuu knee Briere when he caught him behind the play. I use these examples because I don't get to watch regular season games other than the Flyers.

The playoffs have been no different. The huge media uproar that was Therrien b*tching that Renney was looking for referee sympathy. No jack*ss he was asking taht your players FINALLY be called for the stuff they'd done all season. He was asking taht his team have a chance to actually try to beat the Pens. No such luck. What has it been ONE "diving" call all series I believe? I've seen more dives in this series then we will see in the August Olympics.

And last night's Malkin slew-foot on Mara was over the line. IT IS THE FIRST GAME IN THE PLAYOFFS YOU HAVE LOST, PENS!!! NO CHEAP SHOTS NECESSARY!

It is getting ridiculous. The missed calls are making a comedy out of the whole series. I mean a penalty shot last night from a check? Feel free to leave a comment explanation of this because it just baffles me.

I'm not saying that you can blames loses on the refs. That's not where I'm going with this. I'm just saying that they seem to be making it really hard for teams opposing the pens to win.

I wouldn't want to be in the Rangers skates and I don't think any team should have to be. Writing this won't change anything but sounding out to the hockey loving community somehow makes me feel a little better.

Is anyone else noticing this stuff?

Well said! The funny thing is that Kevin Smith ( Clerks) was on NHL live the other day. He was talking about his new movie filmed in Pitts. The DieAHrd Devils fans expressed ho most of the cities around the NHL hate the Rangers. Wow Kevin, it seems like Penguins are the Mall Rats now!

Officials are going to get an earful from fans in every sport around the world, no matter how fairly they call the game, really. But I agree that the officiating in these playoffs has been less than stellar. I'm sure the league office will look over plenty of video and hopefully impress into their refs that things need to change a bit. Good stuff here, I hate diving.

i would say most teams around the nhl hate the pens or the flyers...must be a PA thing...

Always had a repect for my Philly Rivlas. It must have been the X-mas my uncle from NJ bought me the Tommy Soderstrom Helmet. I took my allowance a few weeks later and bought the white Flyers jersey .SHHHHHHHHH

Now, to be fair, I never saw the penalty shot. But what I was told was that the Rangers player came up behind Malkin, while he was on a clear breakaway, and shoved him over from behind. It doesn't matter how you prevent a player on a breakaway from getting a shot off, if you do so from the back and never make contact with the puck, it's going to be a penalty shot.As for the diving, I agree. The only reason I'm cheering for the Pens is because my hated of the Rangers is slightly more than my hatred for Crosby.

You people amaze me...Rule 91b. Go to NHL.com and read the rules before you post your "opinion".

This blog is so over the top that it is probably not even worth responding to, but as the Sabre fan points out, the Penalty Shot was a no-brainer. Malkin was on a clear breakaway and was pushed into the goalie from behind. And before any assumptions are made, I hate the Pens and am pulling for the Rangers (who I hate slightly less than the Pens).

The refs suck, deal with it. There is no conspiracy. If there was would we have gotten power play in OT of game 7 against the Caps in Washington? Would we have gotten one with 3 minutes left in the game on Wed to allow us to go up 3-1 in the series against the Habs? Yes the refs miss calls, they miss calls against them and us. The reason the Habs have twice as many power plays is because we take stupid penalties. Remember we were one of, if not the most penalized team in the league during the regular season. Briere grabs someones stick whenever it gets close to him, Hartnell blatantly runs over the goalie if he is 3 feet from the crease, and so on. We take dumb penalties. On another note, yes the Pens dive, yes they get calls their way. Crosby is a whiner. He is yapping to the refs every stoppage of play. This eventually gets in the refs heads and makes them second guess and call in the Pens favor. It sucks but it works. Don't forget, we have one of the best divers in the league. Upshall has the greatest head whiplash in all of sports. He leaves his helmet strap so loose because it allows his visor to go over his head to accent the neck whip. I am getting sick of people complaining. Look it sucks but deal with it. We are winning, be happy.

yeah i completely agree with your pittsburgh theory. same thing happened at the Winter Classic in Buffalo. there were plenty of missed calls late in that game (on pitt) and it ultimately led to a Sidney Crosby SO game winner. I mean come on...

I have been saying this all along. The "New" NHL was created for Sidney Crosby. They changed the rules for him. He is the poster boy for hockey now and until he does something really stupid in a game he will continue to get preferential treatment. It is just something that the rest of the teams in the league have to get used to and put up with!
May 2, 2008 3:52 PM ET | Delete
it's not that i think there is a conspiracy but you can't even argue that pittsburgh gets away with things that other teams don't...i'm not saying that the league is trying to get them to advance...i just think/know that they don't get penalties that other teams would...it's reeaaally obvious

The penalty shot call must have been pure comedy to many NHL referees last night. They must have all been laughing because it was a huge joke . I forgot who made that call, but oh my. If I was Renney, I would have been going ape xxxx.
May 2, 2008 5:55 PM ET | Delete
would you have been going ape s*** because it was clearly a goal?
May 2, 2008 5:56 PM ET | Delete
That "push" from behind was so soft I doubt it would have knocked over an infant. And yet a 6'3" 200 lbs guy drops like a ton of bricks. What a joke. Maybe if Malkin had of worried more about trying to score and less about flopping around he would have scored on his breakaway.

I agree whole heartedly with szandor.
May 2, 2008 6:27 PM ET | Delete
see that's their problem, pgood...they'd rather fall and get a penalty than take the shot...which makes no sense when they have such high skill players. I just don't understand why they do it. They could probably just as easily score. I think that if they stopped diving (and whining in Crosby's case) that everyone would respect them alot more.
May 2, 2008 7:44 PM ET | Delete
First off...there is absolutely NO WAY Malkin fell on purpose! GET REAL! Have you ever been on a breakaway like that? When you are skating AWAY from someone who pushes you from behind...at that critical time when you are going to take your shot...it's VERY EASY to fall. Second...in the series, the Rangers have had 21 power plays and the Pens 16...and the Rangers had a number of 5 on 3s...that is not possible if you have a theory is true...IS IT? The numbers just don't support your argument.

No, the penalty shot was awarded correctly. However, I agree with you the Pens are a dirty team under that coach and most people don't see to notice it. I actually respect Laraque, but guys like Malkin, Ruutu, Crosby, and others show no class at all. I realize Crosby was just sticking up for his teammates, but Crosby, if someone cleanly hits one of your players your not suppose to start a scrum over it, duh!!!! I mean come on. Either way the best officials BY FAR have been McCreary and his partner. They refed Game 4 of the Flyers/Canadiens series and the Rags/Pens game. Both game were refed VERY well.

lets go flyers beat those classless pens!
