EK, on his latest blog, was suggesting the Avs have been linked to Pavel Kubina of the Leafs. He also states that the Avs are in the Jay Bouwmeester sweepstakes. Let's take a look at some numbers (per TSN stats):
Kubina, signed at $5M per until 2010:
Age 31, Games-664, Goals-83, Assists-187, Points-270, +/- of -86, PIM-827, Shots-1252
Boumeester, RFA, seeking close to $6M per with a long-term deal:
Age 24, Games-389, Goals-38, Assists-123, Points-161, +/- of -25, PIM-261, Shots-740
The stats for both aren't great. But please keep in mind both played (and still play) for horrible teams (Not that they're bad now, just saying they have been terrible before).
While both bring an offensive upside, it's easy to jump all over Jay B because he's younger and hasn't yet signed the big deal. But let's not kid ourselves, he will get his money one way or another and he probably deserves it. He's a franchise d-man, unlike Kubina who is now past his prime and while he may prove useful to some team, I hope it's not the Avs. I would MUCH rather FG take a shot at trading for Jay B even though it would be a steep price, rather than bring in Kubina.
There are certainly the Tucker and Raycroft connections that could prove useful in landing Kubina. A plus is that he has a great shot and isn't afraid to jump into the rush. A minus is that he had over a 120PIM last year. For Jay B, he was a -5 with close to 40pts last year, but again he is a franchise d-man.
So what would it take? I would say Svatos with certainty, along with one of Brett Clark or Jordan Leopold (or perhaps even both if going for Jay B) and maybe a higher-ranked prospect or pick (especially if going for Jay B). While I hate the idea of trading Svatty and even Clark, if it brings a guy like Bouwmeester into the fold, please please do it - it's steep but it's well worth it in the end because you can build the franchise around him.
Covering the Avs from Wonju, South Korea and as always: go avs go!

If its Bouwmeester you want, you may have to look at parting with Wolski and/or Cumiskey. Not saying that will happen, but it will take a lot more, in my mind to get J-Bo than Kubina.

if the avs are going to give up some talent, it better be for bouwmeester. we have the depth at forward to part with some guys and the panthers are in dire need of scoring. i would say svatos and hensick should all be looked at. hensick has mad potential, but the avs need a number one dman. if wolski is the asking price, then i am not so sure. he and stastny are pretty close to untouchable...

Absolutely...Cumiskey is a keeper. Svatos and Leopold for Bouwmeester is an excellent trade for Colorado and not bad for Florida. Let's not forget though that Florida has a habit of trading quality players for a lot less return than expected (Jokinen, Luongo, etc)...it might not cost that much to get him.

svatos/leo is not a bad start. but i think we would need to add hensick and a first to make that offer more attractive. maybe that is overkill but basically every other team is going to make a pitch. we need ours to be the best. and we have enough prospect talent to the point that even hensick is expendable.

You would think so, but look at the Jokinen and Luongo trades. Ballard and some others for Jokinen. Bertuzzi and Auld for Luongo. I think Leopold and Svatos would get the trade done, maybe with a pick (certainly not a first) but not with Hensick.Think of the Colorado lines if that trade happened:Smyth - Stastny - HejdukWolski - Sakic - JonesTucker - Arnason - GuiteMcLeod - McCormick - LaperriereWilsie, LedinBouwmeester - ClarkLiles - FooteSalei - HannanTjarnqvistBudajRaycroft

yeah jbow make an already solid avalanche defense even better. i am really hoping FG is working his magic to make this happen. if svats, leo and a prospect is all we have to give up, then this needs to happen!

You can have Cuminskey, and Ill even throw in a bucket of pucks
Yeah...there's zero choice there, it's Bouwmeester. Cost you a lot though.
cumiskey = paul coffey in 5 years.
