A Passable Solution To The Mats Sundin Saga

I know what you are all thinking , another blog dedicated to hating on Mats Sundin. Though at times I have , this is not the purpose of my blog.
We are all painfully aware that Mats Sundin has yet to decide if he wants to play or not . We know this as we have had it rammed down our throats since July . But have we not opened our mouths as well, to enable it to be shoved down? In other words we are also part of the problem , as the media feeds us speculation , and we are always hungry for more. I just wanted to point out that out before I continued.
It had been pointed out in another blog that Sundin owes nothing to the hockey world as he is in free agent status. But it is that staus as free agent that is causing all the problems. People have complained (myself included , I am not guiltless) that Sundin is being selfish by with-holding his intentions and neither announcing a team or his retirement .For as he remains unsigned , teams refuse to move on and sign others . So leaving some players out of jobs.
Now here is what I appears to me as a pasaable solution to it.
Sundin announces to the hockey world that as it stands AT THE MOMENT he will not be playing hockey this season . Now by announcing this it allows the GM's of the teams to pursue their other options and sign the jobless players. So eliminating one source of discontent against him.
Following this announcement Sundin will have options availabe to him as never before. He could continue to live with is wife at peace from media speculation and the hockey world . So truly experiencing what he wanted in the off-season, "Retirement".
After sampling this Sundin can decide if he wants to remain retired and leave it all behind. Or he could possibly find that he misses it and dedcide to come back .Now if he comes back he can either A) join a team mid-season or B)Join a team next season , after a full season of rest.
As for option A it would mean him going against what he said last season , and so upsetting some leaf fans for failing to accept a trade. But let us all be serious here for a second. Have we not all sometimes said things and then done something totally different . Sure he would be going back on his word , and would of cost the leafs some draft picks and future talent. But the man has a right to do what he wants , and in truth he owes nothing to the franchise of Toronto. (Not taking a jab at you , just merely pointing out a fact.)Are you really going to hold it against him for feeling the signs of age after giving you 14 years of loyal and hardworking service? So that would be option A he goes and plays for a chance to win a cup.
As for option B this would be the best scenario for him if he is looking not to upset people. He sits this season , and next season if he feels he is refreshed enough to play still , he comes and signs in the off-season.End of story.
So that is pretty much my take on it . As for me I would suggest to him option A . If he wants to play he should . People sign players and trade for them mid-season all thhe time to help their playoff pushes. Why shouldn't he be allowed to do the same . It's not like he is under contract like Neidymayer was. If a team wants to take a gamble on him , well the GM's know how to clear space and players if they seem him as worth it .

Option C, he continues to play in his home country of Sweden to prepare for the 2010 Olympics
I like your solution. I would suggest an Option C. Sundin picks a TEAM to play for IF he wants to come back, and then he goes with your A or B. In other words he says, "I am retiring. If I decide to come back and play it will be with Montreal." Now, the other teams truly can turn the page and other FA's can be signed. Montreal, or whoever, can also move on while making preparations in case he comes back. I have no problem with him taking his time to decide. My problem is that he waited so long to communicate his thoughts and left so many teams(NYR, MON,VAN, NYI,PHI) in the running for his services. I think that is where he is being selfish.
It'll never happen that he picks a team to return to while retiring. That's just not going to happen.
Good blog, but I fail to see what the big deal is. Some teams are speculating and it could hurt their chances of getting some help in the immediate future by waiting for Sundin. The man gave 14 years to Toronto. He is past his prime. He turned down big money to see how he feels about playing. Life carries on and hockey will still start on Schedule. Forget about him and worry about how your team will do. The league will not fold without him.
If more people thought as you said in the last few lones of your blog Pj , then this situation would not exist. unfortunately for all involved wheteher Sundin himself , The Gm's of teams and the fan , no one is willing to drop it.
