When the Oilers hired Peter Chiarelli, it reeked of desperation to the point where ownership thought that giving autonomy to someone who won a cup would guarantee a cup. They never did a background check nor looked as to why he may have been fired just said look there is a cup, he is perfect. His resume is that of talent degradation and he did just that again for Edmonton.
As much as the old boys club as they say is a problem, I really believe that at the very least the Reinhart deal, Hall trade and Lucic signing would not have happened uder Mactavish. That being said he may not have drafted the likes of Boeser or Barzal either. Let's hypothetically say his draft is a wash. Having Hall for offense and no Lucic would be so much easier, but that is hear say now. In spite of this I tried to armchair GM for my own roster and while it should be more competitive it is still a ways away from competing. Maybe you can give other ideas too to help. I posted the Roster here.
I did have to trade Nurse, but I think it could get two two-way wingers and a depth defender. I then looked to trade Sekeras, mainly because he is often injured so to get a defender who produces a little less when both are healthy but is only signed 1 year helps cap savings. I really can't see who will take Lucic unfortunately. It was then to start the Chia purge, which I bought out Brandon Manning and Ryan Spooner. Yea I know, Eberle now turned into a buy out.
Well this is my roster
Andreas Johnson - Connor Mcdavid - Leon Draisaitl
Connor Brown - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Alex Chiasson
Lucic - Brodziak - Puljujarvi
Brett Connolly - Jujhar Kaira - Zack Kassian
Klefbom - Larsson
Zac Bogosian - Evan Bouchard
Braydon Coburn - Kris Russell
Andreas Borgman - Matthew Benning
As you can see I was able to fit in the cap, but the defense while more depth is at the moment weaker, but there will be ways to improve for 2020 and 2021. Forwards has a group that should be able to create around 30 goals more amongst the bottom three lines which while not substantial is a good improvement. This lineup will need Bouchard, Puljujarvi and Yamamoto to become who they were expected to. It goes without saying for whoever is the GM, this is needed.
The plan would be to become competitive in 2020 and beyond, and with more creativity it is possible. One thing that would need to happen in next couple year is finding a way to trade our favourite Oiler, Milan Lucic.
My vote goes to either Mark Hunter and first choice for GM, Kelly McCrimmon as second choice or Ron Francis as third choice.
Let's see if the Oilers will be smart and get one of the best two GMs for the job because while they may not do what I tried, they would probably be better and would make at the very least a more balanced attack next year.
