Vancouver Giants vs Plymouth Whalers
Time: 5:00pm PST
Television: Rogers Sportsnet
The Vancouver Giants and Plymouth Whalers meet for the second consecutive Friday in the Memorial Cup Semi-Final. The Giants have looked better throughout the course of the tournament but as with every hockey game there are under-lying factors that may play against them. On the other hand there are a few factors that may play against the Whalers in this one.
First off, I have no previous comparison but from what I can tell the Whalers are not playing their best hockey of the season right now. Judging from the pre-tournament postings by various media outlets the Whalers were expected to be the best team in this tournament and have proven that statment to be incorrect.
So with the pressure off and everyone expecting them to fold the tent and go home, the Whalers pulled off an impressive come from behind victory against Lewiston on Tuesday and then followed it up with an equally impressive victory in last evenings tie-breaker. Say what you want, the Maineiacs did lose their prized goaltender but it does take a good team to recognize that and take advantage of it. Give the Whalers a huge pat on the back as they really turned their fortunes at this tournament around. As of Sunday they looked to be on their way home, today they have a chance at going to the final.
Meanwhile the Giants had two excellent outings against both Plymouth and Lewiston and entered their third game on Wednesday with an opportunity to secure a spot in Sunday's final. The game was hyped big time by many, but I think the Tigers appoarch was a little more laid back. The Tigers strangled the Giants offensively allowing very few quality scoring opportunities and it was the boys from Medicine Hat that ruined the Giants party. The Giants had a huge opportunity on Wednesday that went to waste. It was not due to lack of effort or lack of heart, for the sake of the player's, the deserve better.
With all that being said, the Whalers enter the game with some momentum after two rather solid wins against the Maineiacs. The Giants on the other hand enter the game having not played since Wednesday and suffering from a battle of frustration against the Tigers.
Who will win? Momentum/Sense of Relif or Rest/Frustration?
Watching the webcast of this game right now -- great game as it always is with major junior hockey and the Memorial Cup!
7-1 currently for the Giants :o! Avenge the Wolves Vancouver! :D
