Sidney, Sidney, Sidney

Hey pens fans, So, about a month ago Crosby broke his left foot blocking a shot. He has been playing through it, obviously. He just announced he will miss worlds to let it heal properly. And FYI, if you don't remember him breaking his foot, don't feel bad, neither do I and it was not on the injury reports, i already checked. http://penshockey.blogspot.com

It is a hard time of year

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
I love NHL playoff Hockey. The first round was fabulous. I have 2 games a night every night to watch at least. There were quite a few teams that I like playing. The 2nd round is not so easy of a thing. Less teams I enjoy. Less hockey. The other night both games were on at similar times. There was no 2nd game to stay up and watch. Plus it does get harder to...
Okay I normally don't pay much attention to what my Government does but this is nonsense come on Shane Doan had done nothing but represent his Country. It was proven that Shane Doan did not say the slur. It also happened two years ago Please lets email our MLA's and tell them on how we feel about waisting time and money, this has to be stopped Government has to know ...

Why in the Worlds?

Posted Monday | Comments 0
Canada wins another world hockey championship. Big surprise AND big deal! Why is this tournament played every year during the Stanley Cup Playoffs? Does anybody who follows the NHL care about this tournament right now while the battle for arguably the greatest trophy in sports is taking place, especially if your team is still in it? I'm still trying to figure out the poin...
When I decided to come to Israel for the summer, I was looking up fun stuff to do around the country. Then I remembered Bill Meltzer's blog from last year and subsequent NHL.com article. Hockey Day In Israel

Posted Friday | Comments 0
I just got back from my first ever trip to Metulla, and it was an incredible experience! We'll get my personal stuff aside first: 7 years after first being teased with it, I finally got to skate in Israel! I've been a little homesick for the past couple of months, but no one could stop the giant 25 year old in the Team Canada jersey skating around the small rink with the h...

Sutter 1997 = Lemaire 1993

12-14 years ago I recall Lou Lams shocking me as a diehard Devs fan, he hired Jaques Lemaire and Larry Robinson. I can recall thinking, WOW, what a move to get those types of 'names'. We all know that what happened was an unexpected cup in 1995, and actually what many forget is a 2 goal lead in the first period in the infamous "Guarantee night" in game six of the semi's ag...

Hockey Nationalism

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Thinking about the state of the NHL recently has brought to mind something that I find to be very curious; the state of the NHL's fans. It seems to me that there has been an increasing sense of "hockey nationalism" growing over the past few years. Before I go any further, I feel I should point out that there is a distinct difference between patriotism and nationalism. P...

Doughty Overrated?

Posted Wednesday | Comments 2
In my watching of the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championship there has been constant talk of the top two guys for the 2008 Entry Draft in Ottawa. The consensus seems to be that Canadian Steven Stamkos will go #1 and Drew Doughty, a Canadian defender, will go #2. I was quite surprised by this aspect because of the games I have seen Doughty play I have been surprisingly und...
(forgive the non-hockey post my puckhead bretheren) Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Been a long time....since 1980. I wasn't sure I was going to see one anytime soon. I was 12 when they last won it and will never forget Tug McGraw slapping the mitt on his leg as the city went into pandemonium. In honour of the original sports guy Bill Simmons and on the eve of the World Jrs we introduce the 1st Canadian Sports Guys NHL Power Poll of the season. One thing is for sure about this Lightning team, Barry Melrose or Janet Jones-Gretzky wont have any money riding on them anytime soon. 29-NY Isla...
Just got back from Czech/USA First off by far the best game of the World Jrs. so far. The Czech's came out hard in the first and the US was not ready........at all. The Czech's set the tone for the game and maintained it, unfortunately the tone wasn't enought to keep the oddly lazy and unorganized American squad at bay. Despite the Czech's playing hard and hitting...

Gutsy Win for Hurricances

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
Since we have not heard anything from Matt, I decided to chime in and get the discussion started. Last night's win was, I think, defining for this Canes team. After starting a bit slow and giving up a late 1st period goal on an odd man rush, the Hurricanes played an absolutely solid game in. They bided their time and outskated the Devils until the tide turned. Once the ...
Once 8 years of pass after drafting a player and still not seeing him play in any of the teams affiliates, the player slips off your radar and never usually gets back on. It's different with a kid named Ilya Nikulin. He has had never shown up on the stats side of things like most defenseman so I had never cared to follow him or his Russian teams but today I followed his ...
As I live in Saskatoon SK, where the camp is bieng held I will be watching the Red and White scrimmage and providing thoughts and analysis Sunday night. Stay Tuned Kenny
Quick update. I am told the scouts are experimenting with Nazem Kadri centering Brandon Kozun and Taylor Hall. A line they believe will put pucks in the net.
I finally had a chance to watch practice and the Red vs. White Game today. Practice was just some drills and the players shooting on the goalies. Matt Duchene's stick skills are some of the best I've seen. The Games Final Scroe: 5 to 3 for the Red Team Shawn Lalonde scored twice in 43 seconds late in the second period to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 advantage as Red ...

Canadian World Juniors

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
So today is going to be an interesting game for Canada against the Swiss for a couple reasons. There's a positive and a negative side to playing Switzerland again. Let's start with the negatives. The Canadians like to make pretty plays and a lot of individual efforts to get the puck into the offensive zone. They do dump it in, but on many occasions try to carry it in. U...

World Junior Randoms

Canada looks great this year, the U.S. team looks fantastic as well, I'm really looking forward to the game tomorrow! Led by Derek Stepan ( N.Y. Rangers) the U.S. has more than a few weapons to worry about, I love their speed and finally seeing creativity out of the U.S. program. To be a World Champion you have to be in a sport that the world participates in and beat o...

Canada vs. USA

So today's the big day. Record break...or heartbreak. New Years Eve was a game where many Canadian fans were close to the same nervous feelings as last year against Russia...maybe not quite as dramatic, since elimination wasn't on the line...but still a very important match. When Canada and the USA met on New Years Eve it was like hitting a brick wall for the Canadia...

Heartbreak over Record break

Going into tonight's game against the American's there were a few things that Canada HAD to do... 1) Effective PP 2) Little to no individual free wheeling plays 3) Solid goaltending Let's recap shall we... 1) Canada was 1 for 3 tonight...which isn't really that bad..however against a team where special teams WILL make a difference, they needed. Of course the 1 p...
Matt Reed recaps the World Juniors and discusses a few things we may have learned and have yet to learn... http://www.TheReedReview.com/Blogs.php
The Olympics may have officially begun competition on Saturday, but it's today that for most of Canada the games really start. HOCKEY!!!!!!!! What more could you ask for than to see the best players in the world compete. I know some people that have actually said "I don't see the difference between this and the World Championship, it happens every year". To those peo...
This is perhaps the greatest collection of players ever to compete against each other. I had the pleasure of stumbling across the NHL Network showing all 3 games of the final round in succession last night. Wow was that great hockey! As I watched the game I kept thinking how exciting the series was live and how great it was to re-watch the games knowing how great most ...
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that the Lightning may be interested in loaning Brett Connolly to Canada’s World Junior Championship squad this coming December. If you’re team Canada, why wouldn’t you want Connolly? He has all the intangibles necessary to be a great WJC player. For example, let’s take a look at some of the great WJC leaders for Canada in the past ...

A Wild Week 12/11-12/17

Posted Monday | Comments 0
Last week the Wild won 4 out of 4 road games, playing some of the best hockey they have played all year. What a difference a week can make. The Wild played three games this week, including a road/home back to back against the high octane Jets in Winnipeg and then the streaking Blackhawks back in St. Paul. The week ended on Saturday when the Islanders came to town to play t...

Oh, to be a top-flight hockey referee. To keep pace with players 25 years your juniors; to feel the wind in your helmet/helmet-like hair as you fly down the ice. To have crowds cheer you…when you slip and fall. To bring TV viewers off their couches and to their feet…as they scream obscenities at your image on the screen. To live your life knowing that at any given ...
WJC Agony! Ahh that feeling of nostalgia. And yes now it is official, Canada has lost yet another WJC (anyone who isn't first is a loser so lets not talk about the bronze game). I am now starting to k...
It has come that time of year when everything thinks they can fool the (twitter) world by taking on the persona of different management types. But my real question to everyone is this: Do you actually believe what these fakers say? Let's take for example...
We would all rather be watching our Habs players play in the playoffs right now, but we can get a look at a few of them over the next couple of weeks in the World Championships. Although if the Habs were to lose a game in triple overtime like the Caps did last night I may have had a heart attack. The Canadiens will be sending four players over to Finland and Sweden for thi...

The five minute penalty

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
I have a bone to pick with the rules. The situation rose again during the Canada-Slovak game the other day, where Canada had to kill off two five minute majors from trivial calls. Why rose again? Because NJ's season basically ended trying to kill a five minute boarding penalty. Now when there's an illegal hit to the head, or a boarding, or a bad charging, I understa...
Let the excitement begin now for an event next year. As many now, the NHL is bringing back the World Cup of Hockey next year in Toronto. Major cities were picked globally to present these activities, including Columbus, Ohio; Washington, DC; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Montréal, Q...

CBJ- Crunch Time

As the World Cup of Hockey slowly approaches, the Blue Jackets have been a busy team under the radar. With the loss of Jared Bednar to the Colorado Avalanche organization, the Jackets named John Madden the head coach of the Cleveland Monsters. Madden is a NHL veteran from the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild; and spent last season as an assistant coach for the Flor...

In the midst of seeing countless replays of the McDavid-Matthews connection against Team Russia yesterday, I came to the realization that there is something rather essential lacking in mainstream hockey coverage in this day and age. This missing ingredient is actual tactical analysis of how one team breaks down the other or stifles the opposition offence. At best we see a b...
