With numerous talented free agents hitting the market this Summer, expect the Buffalo Sabres to be involved. While they may not have done much in the past, this year should be different.
Buffalo will see many changes over the next few years, and this upcoming season is just a start. Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regier are likely on their way out in the next season or two. Not only that, but Rick Jeanneret isn't going to announce the games much longer.
There are a number of players currently on the Sabres team who do not need to be there. Despite winning the Northeast Division this past season, Buffalo has many weaknesses, especially with quite a few free agents to sign.
Players such as Drew Stafford, Adam Mair, Steve Montador, Paul Gaustad, and Tim Connolly could all be better off with a different team.
---------
A goaltender is something that Regier said the team needs for next season. A veteran goalie that could play about 20 games a year would be ideal. Rumors have been floating around that fan favorite Martin Biron could make a return, which may not be a bad decision at all. If Regier fails to sign a goaltender, the Sabres can turn to Jhonas Enroth as the backup.
Buffalo is also in need of a first line center and/or a power forward. Patrick Marleau is unlikely to come and play for the Sabres. Regier should take a look at Florida's Nathan Horton, who could make a huge impact with Buffalo.
Horton is 25 years old and has collected at least 45 points in each of the last five seasons. Although he does not have any playoff experience, the 3rd overall pick in the 2003 draft would be a huge pickup for Buffalo.
----------
Craig Rivet is expected to miss at least four months due to a shoulder surgery that he have in the near future. Rivet tallied 15 points in 78 regular season games, and remains under contract for another year with Buffalo.
After two sub-par seasons with the Sabres, it may be time to move the "C" onto some one else's jersey. It seemed like a good trade when the Sabres acquired Rivet from the Sharks in 2008, but he hasn't performed as well as hoped.
While I am not suggesting that they get rid of him, I believe the Sabres have plenty of better options for the captaincy. Although, I don't see what goes on in the locker room and off the ice. From what I see on the ice, I don't believe he should be Buffalo's captain. What do you think? Leave a comment below with any thoughts.
----------
Buffalo Sabres prospect Zack Kassian was recently arrested for an altercation that occurred in a bar. Kassian was earlier suspended 20 games by the OHL for his hit on Matt Kennedy.
Kassian is already on his way to becoming a very dirty player for the Sabres. He is compared to Milan Lucic and his favorite player is Todd Bertuzzi, but he can do a lot more than play physical. In his last 99 games, he has scored 94 points.
Buffalo has high expectations for Kassian, but he needs to stay out of trouble, both on and off the ice.
gotta agree, kj, the opportunity is there for regier and co. to add an impact player or two...sabres recent history has proven that the odds of this happening are very slim...was not opposed to the minimal moves last off-season adding grier and monty...was not p.o.'d by their one trade-deadline move either...this off-season represents an opportunity to add at least one impact player...(fingers crossed?)
gotta disagree on monty, kj...after his benching he really picked up his game...the guy is a steady third-pair d-man who seemed to really pick up his game during the playoffs...knew about his grit, but never realized how well he moved the puck out of his zone...is he a duncan keith or shea weber?...no...but for $1.5m i'd gladly keep him...wouldn't mind seeing him offered contract extension either...
Your expecting alot aren't you, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Lindy will be there for at least 3 more years. He and Miller are the faces of the franchise. As a Sens fan I hate the Sabres, but I have been to Buffalo a few times and respect the fans and the team.
Rivet will wear the 'C' for next year and then I think they will pass it to Roy with Vanek wearing the 'A' and I am not sure who would wear the other one, maybe you give it to Myers since he will eventually be your franchise player and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Marleau on that team would be deadly, too bad he won't come to Buffalo. I can't wait to play you 6 times next year and hopefully meet again in the playoffs. Buffalo vs Ottawa is not a sexy series but it's a fun one!Go Sens Go!
http://cdhockey.blogspot.com/2010/05/new-captain-for-sabres.htmlMy Thoughts on the Sabres Captaincy
Roy is not a leader at all riceroni.....Lindy will be fired after this season, thank god
Roy a leader???????? I don't think so, he should be trade bait.
ruff will not be fired at the end of this season...he may not be offered a new contract, though...back to players...i thought horton was a big winger?...marleau is a fine player, but we're talking at least $6m for him...he had a great year this year...as a lw with thorton and heatley...if available, all focus, imo, should be on patrick sharp first and foremost
derek roy exhibits no leadership qualities whatsoever...he should not be wearing a letter at all...rivet was chosen as captain by the players...right now there's only one player on this team who could be captain other than rivet--vanek...if there is a change?...vanek, "c"...grier, "a"...rivet, "a"...alternate-alternates?...hecht and myers...imo, of course
Some of you need to wake up. Lindy can coach here as long as this ownership group is in place. Not that i agree with that stance, but you can bet that is the case. Absolutly NO chance Roy EVER wears the "C". I Know lots of people claim to have connections, but I heard with my own ears from one our minority owners that we are looking to add a forward in the 5-6 mil. range, for what it's worth.
that would seem to be marleau, chugger...and "for what it's worth," it's a good time of year for speculation...i'm all for throwing stuff like that around...care to expound?
Over a beer or two with a mutual friend. They seem open to Hank AND Toni, but only at a home town discount (they are higher on Hank). They may need to dangle one of our younger small forwards, and believe it or not Kennedy's name was brought up, among others. They LOVE Jeff Carter, but that would obviously be a tricky deal.
extrememly depressing post, chugger...i'm not sure exactly what hank does save poke-check and cover ice with his reach...he can't move forwards from the crease, doesn't stick up for his teammates (read, miller,) does not strike fear in the opponent, has decent puck-moving abilities, is an average scorer and does not play the pp...take away myers and he's a #4/3...
lydman would be a keeper, at a home-town discount, imo...he played very well in the playoffs...but, assuming that myers, rivet and monty are set on the right side (which i believe,) where would buts, sekera, weber, and possibly grags fit in?...given the choice, i'd take lydman over hank...
of course they love jeff carter...this playoff he looks like he's exactly what they have in connolly...if roy were taller, he'd be exactly like those two...so they rid themselves of roy or connolly to bring in a similiar player who costs more...god, i hope you're wrong on all fronts...but, thanx for the speculation...got my blood pumping on this off-day...
Roy is a big leader in the room, i think the C would do him wondersand I hope they stay as far away from Nathan Horton as humanly possible
Notice how Kevin put "chances" instead of "changes." There will be chances, oh yes. Nothing more than that, though!
Not to say I told you so about Hank and Toni, but check out www.wgr550.com this morning!!!!
I want no part of Horton. Boos I love the Vanek-C Grier and Rivet-A idea I have been saying that for a while aswell. I don't believe Roy is a force in the room Capt I just really can't see it/
doesn't make me feel any better, chugs...(in fact, i want to throw up)
the thought of roy with the "c" makes me want to vomit as well
the complexion of this team will not change as long as the likes of hank, derek "dipsy-doodle" roy and connolly are on the team...they are names i'm really tired of seeing on the sabres roster...regier is another sabre-name i've grown tired of...but...can only let this one play out
Honestly, I want to believe things will be different come this offseason but realistically I don't believe it. Here's my 2 reasons why. 1. After a top-to-bottom evaluation of the team last year, Larry Quinn and the gang changed very little. This year we won the division and made the playoffs. The goal for this year was making the playoffs and the accomplished it.
2. My second reason is that Darcy, Quinn and Lindy overvalue their players. Sure they'll discuss offers and possible trades. But when it comes down to pulling the trigger it probably won't happen. It has been said that Darcy almost didn't the trade with Calgary a few years ago to get Drury because he wanted a bigger return. Don't get me wrong, I want change to happen but given the team's history under Darcy, Lindy
and Quinn, I don't see it happening. Wow, posting comments really isn't easy on this site.
you've got to adapt, miller-time...gotta keep the posts to a few lines...think of them as paragraphs and use multi-posts...as one who's been kicked out of the big sand-box, it's not that difficult...
maybe the focus should be on recent gaffe's by upper-management...it's been three years since driere...it's really old news...i prefer to focus upon the 2nd-rounder for moore with the broken hand, the 2nd-rounder for torres, who was out of shape and the kassian pick...
of course there are blunders galore with the in-house love of "la core" as well...regier needs to sh!t or get off the pot this off-season...cap-restraints will hamper some teams, most notably chicago, and a couple of teams are missing top-picks in the next two drafts (t.o. and phi)...impact players will be available...(shrugs)...we'll see
