Many Sabres fans, including myself, became furious over the fact the Regier hadn't made any moves on July 1st. With every signing, it seemed like the Sabres chances of improving became slimmer.
Before free agency even began, the only thing Regier did was re-sign Mike Grier, which is a solid move. That still left six unrestricted free agents on the team, leaving around $14 million of space left to sign players.
Martin Biron was one of the first moves on Thursday, signing with the New York Rangers for under $900,000 for two years. Are you kidding me?! Unless Biron really doesn't want to play for Buffalo, there is no reason Regier could not top that offer. Even if it was for $1.3 per year, he would have been a solid pickup.
Shortly after, we watched Gonchar get signed, followed by Volchenkov and Coburn. Henrik Tallinder became an ex-sabres by signing a four year deal with New Jersey for $3.3 million. After Anaheim signed Lydman, the "fire Darcy" comments build up once again.
Finally, Regier signed Jordan Leopold for three years, totaling nine million. With that signing compared to Tallinder or Lydman's, it is an obvious downgrade on defense. Out of the three, I would have chosen Leopold last.
Leopold has only played more than 60 games twice in the last six seasons. He rarely plays physical and will not improve the team's toughness. He is an offensive defenseman that will score 20-30 points at best.
Hopefully he will be a good fit in Buffalo, but there is no reason Regier couldn't sign Tallinder to a similar contract like the Devils did. Basically, Regier got rid of, what I think, two of the top three defenseman on the team.
Tyler Myers is obviously locked in on the first pairing, but with who? Him and Tallinder shared similar abilities with their height and worked well together. Craig Rivet may not make it back in time due to surgery. Plus, Rivet didn't perform that well when he was healthy.
It was only day one of free agency, but Buffalo missed out on a lot of opportunities. Regier can still make up for it in the next few days. If Regier can find a way to sign Tomas Kaberle or acquire Mark Streit in a trade, I will be satisfied with the defense.
There's still around ten million left to spend and what the team needs is a backup goaltender and defense. Buffalo can still shop around Connolly, Roy, and Stafford as well. Bobby Ryan would be a great addition to the team on the top line with Vanek.
Darcy has to do something. There is no way he is done. Let's see what Regier decides to do over the next few days. Fans have the right to be discouraged, but there are still plenty of opportunities for the Sabres to capitalize on.
if darcy can find another vanilla forward or d-man to overpay, he certainly will not be done...hmmmm, who's still out there?...i'm looking for a soft-but-skilled forward and another "puck-mover" on the back-end...oh...and, btw...another pre-requisite is that he must be goal-less in the playoffs
other notes...the isles allowed biron to talk with the rangers out of courtesy...biron probably didn't want to wait around all summer and certainly wasn't about to wait around for regier to low-ball him...the rangers wanted him, made him an offer and marty signed on
anton volchenkov was signed late-afternoon/early evening, waaaayyy beyond the signings of both coburn, hank and toni...
now, on to opinion...leopold as an "offensive d-man" scoring 30 pts. in a season?...lol...he's hank light...a vanilla addition by a vanilla gm to add to his vanilla core...having said that, i hope he excels in the blue and gold
sooo...everyone's still on the kaberle train...uh-huh...just what the sabres need, another soft-but-skilled d-man...that's right add pure vanilla extract to the vanilla core...f^ck kaberle...f^ck the snake-oil salesman brian burke...they shoulda overpaid for volchenkov, but he's "anti-core"
give me one good reason why the isles would want to part with mark streit?...total inanity from ek, garth or whomever started that stupidity
finally, regier needs to do very little, if anything...that's why he should be fired...i'd certainly contribute to an billboard that says "FIRE REGIER"...btw, what better way to show displeasure with the team than boycotting the first regular season game of their 40th anniversary season ; )
edit: regier needs to do very little, if anything to keep his job for this season, and maybe beyond
What up boos!
hey, madcow...playin' in the little sandbox here...got kicked outta the big one and ek wants too much for me to go back
been on the volchenkov train for months...what a shame they couldn't/wouldn't pay him $5m and change...that might have gotten him to buffalo...
as for souray?...what are the sabres lacking on d?...a pp-qb and a defenseman with a serious edge...what does souray offer?...exactly that...is it a gamble?...absolutely...does darcy have any balls?...no...cap-hit for souray is $5.4m but actual salary is $4.5m...
yes, i know he has issues and may not even want to come to buffalo, but regier really needs to "gm out of character"...i'm tired of vanilla...really, really, tired of it
this one fell right into regier's lap...he could fix his d, at least for two seasons, with one fell swoop...the cool part about souray to buffalo is, the more sabre-fans hate the idea, the more i'm inclined to like it...nothin' personal to anyone...go get'im darcy...redemption is at hand
Bos whats up, hope all is well..Darcy is still screwing everything up..why the hell is he still here?
Sup Bos? I like Souray on re-entry, $2.7 is worth it, $5.4 not so much.
I dont mind Hank and lydman going. We have way too many good young defense in portland that need a chance to play. What he should focus on is getting rid of Pomminville Roy Connolly and HEcht (equal to 18 million dollars). These 4 have done absolutely nothing and have shown that they have no heart or souls. Why do we give pomminville 5.3 million dollars but wont sign guys like Campbell who love buffalo and cry when they are traded. Bull Shit
ryan is not leaving anahiem....why would they let him go? they have 22 million in cap space
what's up, y'all?...word is that the sabres may be in play for nickolai zherdev...neither here nor there, kotalik-upgrade, catapults him in front of staff for top-six consideration... (shrugs)
here kevin bieksa's name thrown around alot...if i'm not mistaken, jt (r.i.p) was always pretty "high" (snicker, snicker) on him...maybe darcy has a concussion fetish and would rather have willie mitchell (i would)
really want to see regier go anit-core to pair with myers...shut-down type, somebody with a mean streak (that applies to souray)...wanted volchenkov...neit!!!...want mitchell (felling dizzy)...want souray (i'm a head-case?)...want.............robyn regehr...cgy is over the cap right now and they're a fucked up organization...ripe for the picking
all-in-all, i've pretty much given up on acquiring a #1 center...and, as always, thx for your support : )
We can't sign good players because we're hamstrung with the Vanek and Pommers deal. If Kovalpuke gets 10 a year that's only 2.5 million more a year than Vanek. Should've let Vanek go. Those 3 First rounders would be contributing.
July 7 and not a new Sabre in sight....unless Tropp counts..not. 1st to worst.
