Laich and Jagr

Posted 10:55 AM ET | Comments 9
For a few weeks now many Penguin fans have been discussing and debating the possible return of Jaromir Jagr to the Penguins.

Some people don't see the point in signing a 39 year old who hasn't played in the NHL for 3 seasons to a $3M contract (word on the street).

I look at the recent signing of Brooks Laich to a 6 year, $27M contract by the Washington Capitals as more proof that Jagr is worth the money.

Laich is a good player. He's a character guy with some toughness and skill. He's a lot like Ryan Malone. Now Laich, like Mallone, has a $4.5M per year contract.

While both of these guys bring a physical element to their game that Jagr does not, both of them are your typical 40-50 point players in the NHL.

If the market for a player like this...one that can score 50 points and bring a physical element to the game...is $4.5M per season...then isn't the market for a 50 point player (assuming Jagr will do this if he gets the playing time) who has great puck handling skills $3M per year?

Just saw Dupuis 2 years for $3M...1.5 per. Nice signing for a guy that can play all over the place. Who would have thought HE would be the guy left from the Hossa trade? Also read that Shero and Svoboda are talking again today...

He (Jagr) had 22G 20A in 52 KHL games last year, so yes the guy still has some offensive skills - but he is horrible defensively, and although I do not follow the Penguins (I see them 6 times a year as a Devs fan) I seem to recall this coach having a pretty good Defensive system, and if that's the case a guy like Jagr might not be a great fit - ask Ranger fans about his 2 way play! He is terrible in his own zone- on the rare occasions that he does back check!

i feel that jager has pretty much done it all both over in the khl and then nhl which means that he might be an added cancer to the lockeroom

According to todays, June 29th, Detroit News, it's down to either Pittsburgh or Detroit for Jagrs services. Pittsburgh made him an offer and Jagrs agent Petr Svoboda is supposed to meet with Detroit GM, Ken Holland today with a decision on Friday.

njdevil267...Jagr was never known as a defensive forward...but in his NHL career he is PLUS 275...that's a really good number for a forward. As a comparison...Lemieux PLUS 115...Recchi EVEN.
