The Flyers mad a big splash today and landed Chris Pronger in a trade.

Smart move for the Flyers.

Flyer fans will start salivating the moment they hear of this news...visions of Crobsy getting crunched by Pronger along the boards...or Malkin getting hip checked as he tries to cruise through the middle of the ice.

Yep...they certainly have reason to think he will make a big difference against the Penguins...and all of the other teams the Flyers play next season...especially in the post season.

But I love it for another reason...

Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury and the rest of the Penguins are going to need an early wake-up call after the cup hangover and I am sure the Flyers will be willing to oblige with Pronger back there to do dammage.

I expect the Penguins to maybe have some early season failures...but hopefully by about the time the stretch run starts and we move into the playoffs (assuming the Pens cen get there again...never a safe assumption these days...) we should be in for some great match-ups.

Pronger is the EXACT kind of challenge guys like Crosby and Malkin need.

Will they be up to the task?

We won't know until we get there.

But I am excited for it already!

Because everything revolves around the Penguins. I can only hope Pronger ends Sissy's career with an elbow to the head...

Pandofan...I rarely comment on a commment...but you sound like an idiot...I hope Pronger plays well and is physical against Crosby and anybody else...but I don't wish harm to any player. They ALL contribute to make this the great game that it is. Maybe you just can't see that...

Not to mention the sold a significant part of their future for him. It is a big risk too!

Way to try and steal the Flyers thunder. This blog is ultimately gay. The FLyers brought Pronger in to defend against CRosby and MAlkin not to make them better players and help the Penguins make the cup. A real fan would want his team to win every game not face adversity and hope everything straightens out for the stretch like you do. Grow up.
June 27, 2009 6:33 PM ET | Delete
turdpeters - You should really re-consider the use of the word "gay" in a comment that then proceeds to try and tell someone to "grow up". The last sentence kind of loses any effectiveness at all when you consider the second one.

I just wish harm to ALL Penguins players....and you sound like one self-obsessed PENS fan to try spin the Pronger trade into something that can only serve to better the interests of the Penguins. Do you realize how absurd that sounds? If Pronger pulls the crap Malkin did with minutes left in a losing game you can bet he'll be suspended for 20 games.
June 27, 2009 11:56 PM ET | Delete
Pandofan - There are so many things wrong with what you said, I don't even know where to start. But the only thing that really sounds "absurd" to me is wishing harm to ALL Penguins players.
June 28, 2009 12:19 AM ET | Delete
I think Philly overpaid, but it's a smart move.
June 28, 2009 12:29 AM ET | Delete
icedog - that's why they call it hockey and not "teaparty". Perhaps you can find a way to rationalize why every UFA signed to an Eastern Conference team on wed. is of benefit of "keeping the PENS top players sharp!" ...and by sharp I mean the arguments for penalties by half your team.
June 28, 2009 1:32 AM ET | Delete
icedog you seem delusional. you dont actually have an counter arguments. youre just dancing around our arguments.
June 28, 2009 2:38 AM ET | Delete
I have to agree with icedog. A couple of questions come to mind like, who is the team to beat in the east? Who have the flyers lost to in the last two playoffs? Pittsburgh boasts an incredible 1-2-3 punch, and i think the flyers made this move, not only for defence assurance, but to counteract what the Pens have. Personaly I dont think its enough, but it will be fun to watch.
June 28, 2009 3:46 AM ET | Delete
turdpeters - Delusional? In what respect? Pronger is a great add for the Flyers. It will make them tougher to beat. It will make Malkin and Crosby play better or lose. That's good for everybody. Am I missing something here?
June 28, 2009 3:47 AM ET | Delete
To say it's good for the Penguins is a bad thing because Pronger will make it tougher to beat Philly? Why is that a bad thing? You assume that a fan of the Penguins is not also a fan of the league...or in this case the Eastern Conference.
June 28, 2009 3:47 AM ET | Delete
I have no delusions. If the Flyers beat the Penguins in the playoffs and Pronger is a big reason why...then so be it. I can cheer as much as I want but in the end, I don't play the games...I just watch them. And the rivalry should get even better with Pronger being added. Am I missing something? BTW...what are your arguments anyway?
June 28, 2009 4:46 AM ET | Delete
The point icedog is to immediately cheer for this trade based on the fact that "it will make Crosby and Malkin play harder and be even more spectacular" sounds a little self-absorbed while you're holding up a cup. Especially in a league where those 2 players already get enough attention.
June 28, 2009 4:48 AM ET | Delete
If you had said Crosby, Ovechkin, and Parise (or use LeCavilier if you want it doesn't matter) it would sound like you were making a fair statement for the E. Conference, this blog sounds PENS-centric in a trade that has about as much to do w/you as it does w/every other tram in the Atlantic.
June 28, 2009 11:58 AM ET | Delete
OK...let me understand this...I should have said nothing and you would be happy? Please re-read my blog. Did I say what you put in quotes? NO. Am I holding up anything? NO. "self-absorbed"? Get a clue. I wrote how this trade related to the Penguins. Is that so terrible?
June 28, 2009 12:04 PM ET | Delete
Maybe I am mistaken, but it doesn't seem like you have read my other blogs. I am NOT a Penguins "fan-boy". I have watched this team for over 25 years. Maybe when I was a teen-ager, I only saw things through my Penguins colored glasses. But not now.
June 28, 2009 12:08 PM ET | Delete
Remember...part of your first reply was "I can only hope Pronger ends Sissy's career with an elbow to the head..." and now 20 or so replies later you are trying to carry on an intelligent debate and are implying that I need to be more objective? Hmmmm......
June 28, 2009 2:40 PM ET | Delete
June 28, 2009 4:48 PM ET | Delete
At the end of the day this trade did not improve the Flyers as much as people think it did. Pronger is a dirty player who will take a lot of penalties in front of Ray Emry (as if he needed help to screw his team over). He uses his stick and elbows to cause injury and the refs all know it.
June 28, 2009 4:49 PM ET | Delete
Come to think of it, he's the perfect fit for the flyers. One more player that will help them get to the penalty box.

The initial point was regarding objectivity. And I do hope Pronger ends Sissy's career. You must have graduated from the SAM WOO School of Journalism. Stop dancing around the semantics of "debate etiquette" and just admit your initial post was trying to spin this to benefit your beloved Penguins.

Pando, just a word of advice I learned while I was at a real school for journalism (not SAM WOO) is that objectivity is not essential to columns, and a personal blog like this is more like a column than actual news.
June 29, 2009 1:45 AM ET | Delete
Also, if you want to call someone out on their objectivity make sure you yourself are remaining objective. Wishing for harm to come to another human being is not exactly objective.
June 29, 2009 2:34 AM ET | Delete
Bryan - agreed about the objectivity, but likewise in a blog one must be prepared to be called out. I never said that I was objective, but nor did I throw up a blog stating how this whole thing is best for Parise as it will make him better. I think we are all just a little burnt with the focus on Malkin
June 29, 2009 2:35 AM ET | Delete
....and Crosby over and over for the last 2 months or so. Can't someone else have the spotlight for a few hours of one day?
June 29, 2009 7:33 AM ET | Delete
Don't confuse objectivity with "focus". It's apparent that people did not like the fact that I focused on the Penguins when speaking of the Pronger trade. It was a quick blog that summed up my thoughts at the moment. I could write a whole blog about how the trade affects the Eastern Conference...but I didn't at that time.
June 29, 2009 7:37 AM ET | Delete
And if you think my blog about the Pronger trade is taking the spolight away from the Flyers, then you are SERIOUSLY OVER ESTIMATING the number of people that read what I write and it's impact on ANYTHING except my time spent on the internet!!!!!
June 29, 2009 9:10 AM ET | Delete
Ice it was a quick read, please don't get a head of yourself. At the same time I read over 8 other blogs and I even skipped over it at least 3 times because I knew the names of Malkin and Crosby would be typed at least twice. Step outside of the box.
June 29, 2009 9:42 AM ET | Delete
Phi1671 - Let me see...a blog by a Pens fan...about the Pronger trade...I guess it is pretty strange I would mention Malkin and/or Crosby. There's NO WAY Philly traded for Pronger so that he could try and neutralize those guys...I mean especailly since the Pens beat the Flyers in the playoffs the last two years.
June 29, 2009 9:48 AM ET | Delete
C'mon man...GIVE ME A BREAK! You guys are so over sensitive to the whole Crosby/Malkin thing it's laughable. It goes back to what I have said for at least 2 years now...Flyers fans are more responsible for hieghtening the Crosby hysteria than ANYBODY else!
June 29, 2009 9:54 AM ET | Delete
I mean, your team had a 3-0 lead in game 6 and the whole crowd could think of nothing better to do than say "Crosby Sucks!" Then, the REST of Crosby's team beat your team. How can't you guys see that your focus/almost pyschotic obsession on/with Crosby is like a sickness.
June 29, 2009 12:36 PM ET | Delete
To those posting comments...it seems that if you type more than a certain number of characters (don't know how many), the comment will post blank. So, if you are long winded, like me, post in 2 or three comments if you need to...
June 29, 2009 5:15 PM ET | Delete
Author: you don't have to apologize to a commenter because he calls you out for writing a Pens-centric blog. That's a fact made clear at the top of the column. If he was looking for an objective, NHL column, he can go elsewhere. As a Flyers fan, I read this because I was interested in a Pens' fan's perspective on the trade. I don't care about Cindy, what I've cared about is the free pass to the front of the net that the Pens
June 29, 2009 5:17 PM ET | Delete
and other teams had against Philly. I went back and looked at the shot chart. The Pens scored 59% of their goals against Philly from between 5-15 feet in front of the net. Not to mention the numerous high quality saves Biron made from in close. This trade should effectively neutralize that advantage.

Ice step out of the bubble. You will see the light some day. Good Luck. Don't state the obvious because it shows you did not understand the post.
June 29, 2009 11:11 PM ET | Delete
ya id like to see old man pronger stop crosby and malkin at the same time with philly also having less goal scoring
June 30, 2009 3:25 PM ET | Delete
Phi1671 - No, what you fail to understand is the difference between being objective and having an opinion that is DIFFERENT than yours. "Step outside of the bubble" "step outside of the box"...what does that really mean when YOU say it? I wrote a blog yesterday about the Eastern conference...didn't mention the Penguins, Malkin or Crosby...NOT even one time. I wrote a blog on 6/22 about the Norris Trophy...no Penguins mentioned there either.
June 30, 2009 3:33 PM ET | Delete
Phi1671 - It's just easy to use that as reply when there is nothing else you can say. How can you refute 20K fans screaming "Crosby Sucks!", 90 minutes before your season was over?
