Last night, I was pretty ticked off about not being able to watch the NHL awards show. I find the awards show, with it's awful humor and poor production qualities, a great coda to the NHL season and playoffs.
Well, I wrote a blog blaming the NHL and Gary Bettman. Turns out it was a TV truck from the CBC. I still fault Bettman for a great deal of the NHL's issues, however, last night's delayed broadcast of the awards should not have been among them.
I am big enough to admit I just to a faulty conclusion. Of course, I am also big enough that my ass stays wedged in a beach chair when I stand up. To steal from HHOFer Gene Hart, Good night, good hockey.
Jesus, I need both tonight!
Good man Jsaq here are hte replies I got from the NHLResponse 1First off I would like you to know we understand your frustrations. There were unforeseen technical difficulties getting the live feed from Canada which caused the delay. Versus was able to tape delay the ceremony and air it at 11pm EST. There was a scroll put up to inform the viewers of the new time of air during the original time of air. It was truly unfortunate however Versus did everything they could to make sure our fans would be able to see the program, technical difficulties or not!Again we understand your frustrations as we here at the NHL believe our fans deserve nothing but the best.Thank you for your comments. We appreciate your feedback.NHL TVResponse 2 (I was given an NHL honcho to write to when I went into Hockey buzz chat) (I am leaving out the guys phone number out of respect)Thanks for your note. Unfortunately, Versus was the victim of a CBC problem last night. The Transmission truck that was suppose to transmit the show to CBC and VS burst into flames at 6:15. Both networks were forced to create contingency plans that caused major issues in both countries.Versus was able to air the show on tape delay at 11 pm et.Unfortunately, an act of god like a fire cannot be predicted. Thanks for being a fan, and feel free to call or email any time.Regards,JOHN SHANNONSr. Vice-President, Broadcasting,NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
While I have no first hand knowledge of your ass's size, I know that I'm not as generous a man as you. These are professional broadcasters who should be prepared for almost any contingency. Trouble with a broadcast truck is eminently forseeable. The live feed wasn't delayed that much. Versus should have gone ahead with it instead of pillow fighting, or whatever it was they showed.
I understand some of the issue with a live broadcast and will be forgiving to a point. The litany of sins in the last blog stand, but I'll give Bettman and the NHL a chance to say some Hail Marys and divest themselves of this one.
EDIT: My biggest fear remains that a SNAFU such as this could repeat itself during a game broadcast. Again, I can't toss blame for a truck fire, but when ESPN held the contract, I never had my OT's pre-empted or my award shows on tape delay because a truck burned down. That's the jist of my complaints, and the Commish seems as concerned as my quasi-legal lawn care technician, Manuel.
Hey Jsaq, I was also annoyed I had to wait to watch, but I wasn't angry at Bettman until his son was interviewed on the red carpet. The question was asked if his son played hockey. The kids response was "well sort of, I play road hockey, I like it but I don't skate." Bettman is the commisioner of the league and he can't manage to get his son some ice time, or lessons???? Geez
The truck caught fire! I love it. Jsaq, I figured you were rake thin given your avatar of Jack. But then I guess these days he'd get stuck in a beach-chair himself.
Well, HF1, John Zeigler used to vacation in Europe during the playoffs, so Bettman is a bit better than that. Still, get the kids on a patch of ice for Eddie Shack's sake!!! Maybe Bettman figures that if his kids ever make the NHL Chris Chelios will still be playing and exact revenge on them.
Bill, I live a happy and very sedentary lifestyle in a resort town on the jersey shore. I work in computers and the nearest ice leagues for adults are a hour and a half drive. Toss in two kids and an utter lack of free time and it adds up to a large posterior.
Billionaire owners, Millionaire players .. a night honouring the best of the best ..The fans that shell out the ticket prices deserved better. Versus, CBC, NHL .. hope you have better plans in place for the draft ! hockeyfan1 - i TOTALLY agree with you. thank God they didn't ask him if he'd ever been to a game.
