Last night the late local news in Pittsburgh led off with the Jordan Staal arrest, complete with a picture that appeared to be his "mug shot" (because we all know how much more menacing people look in those pictures!) The lead-in for the story was something along the lines of "A local athlete arrested under multiple charges..."

The "lead story" is designed to catch your attention so that you stay tuned for the rest of the news. It almost always has a catchy little headline that leads you to believe there's some real juicy stuff to follow. It's all about selling the news...and to some extent we are all guilty of it...even us bloggers want people to read what we have to say!

Unfortunately, the actual story is, almost always, not as impressive (serious crimes aside).

That appears to be the case with Jordan and Eric's minor arrests after Eric's bachelor party. What at first looks like another "professional athletes gone wrong" scenario turns out to be more like "some young guys were drinking and making too much noise after they have been asked to quiet down."

Hopefully the media won't dwell on this too much and hopefully, as well, there are no other details to this story that will make it more serious (bachelor parties have been known to include multiple illegal activities!). Because if that's all it is, then it really just turns out to be a bad decision, by a bunch of young men, to keep mis-behaving after they had been asked to behave.

Unless more revealing details emerge, it really should be that simple.

Yes, it's just 'boys being boys'. They weren't stabbing someone in a strip club or involved in a dog fighting operation. This should blow over pretty swiftly.

the only reason why this was even in the news is obviously because they are noted athletes. How many parties go on every weekend where the cops are called? I'm sure more than one can report. Its just great "news" to report on everything athletes do.

Yes, up here in Toronto it was reported on every sports station as if it was a huge deal. Pathetic if you ask me, they supposedly spent the night in jail. My response to that was that they probably were busy signing autographs for the cops. These people have lives too outside of hockey, it's just weak that they get overexposed like this.

I didn't hear a word about it...and I'm sure the NHL won't bother stepping in either. If anything, daddy NHL is looking down on his youngest son coming home drunk for the first time.
