In the Vancouver-Philadelphia game, Flyers winger Jesse Boulerice viciously two handed Canucks center Ryan Kesler in the jaw. It was a flagrant, brutal action and Boulerice is certainly deserving of a nice, long suspension.
Where it gets interesting is the Flyers have a guy currently suspended. That would be Steve Downie, who was suspended for twenty games for his brutal hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond. In my humble opinion, Boulerice's hit was worse than Downie's because he used his stick as a weapon. Kesler's jaw could have been shattered easily by Boulerice's actions.
This is the time for NHL discipline Czar Colin Campbell to prove the NHL isn't just talking a good game when it comes to head shots. Boulerice has at least one stick incident in his past and clearly intended to injure Kesler. Any suspension short of twenty games shows that Campbell is only full of bluster about ridding the game of head shots. It also shows that Steve Downie's well publicized temper and history of incidents was a factor in his suspension, despite Campbell's contradictory statements.
Campbell needs to make a strong statement after this attack on Kesler, regardless of how visible a player's past is, or what his name is, or how popular he is around the league. There is no place in the game for the Boulerices, Todd Bertuzzis and Chris Simons of the world.
I feel twenty games was too many for Downie, considering similar hits by the likes of Brooks Orpik, Colby Armstrong and Ryan Hollweg were not punished as severely or at all. However, I did say(and continue to say) that if twenty games is going to be the benchmark, that is what Downie deserves. It is certainly what Jesse Boulerice deserves.
Could not agree more JS! I cringed when I saw that brutal crosscheck and Kessler lying motionless on the ice. Boulerice is playing to stay on the team, but with cowardly play like that he had better be worried if he will play in the NHL at all. There is no room for that sort of bush league behavior. As a Flyers fan, my heart goes out to Ryan Kessler in hopes that he is ok. Boulerice's vicious crosscheck certainly deserves at least as much as what Downie got. I agree wholeheartedly that Colin Campbell needs to make a statement here - 20 might not be enough. Nice work JS. SYF
I had hockey last night, got back to the bar was watching the highlights and I was totally pumped, great stuff. Then they showed the Boulerice thing, what a mess. He is an idiot and I would be happy if he was done for the year, there is no place in hockey for that crap.
At least 10, hopefully 15, even better 20. No reason for it.
This should be at least twenty games. Downie's should not have been and the time for good old Colin Campbell to step up was two weeks ago when Andy Sutton blasted that guy in the head with an elbow, but oh yeah, that happened in the states so the media outrage was no where to be seen. Personally, I don't see why Boulerice was even on this team and don't care how long he's suspended. If history played a part in Downie's suspension than pleading guilty to assault for a baseball bat swing to the head in a CHL game will certainly come into play here.
Could not agree with you more, i am not bitter that the Flyers put a good old fashion butt whooping on my canucks they played one heck of a game and if they play like this the rest of the way look out they will be a force to be reckoned with but this is not something Philly wants hanging over there head trust me "Bertuzzi",They need to take swift action even before Colin Campbell gets his hands on him and release this player or do what ever it takes in order to put this behind them so they can continue there season without this hanging over there heads.
