With Friday nights impressive win the Preds have climbed back into the last playoff spot in the West (Edmonton - Calgary had yet to play as of this posting late Saturday). Dan Ellis was, once again, spectacular and continues his impressive streak of hockey. He has put this team on his shoulders and is carrying them...big time! (on a bit of a side note...how about the Preds finishing the season 7-0-1 against the BJ's and 15-0-1 over the last two seasons. I don't care if the Preds are playing the Peoria Rivermen that is a heck of record against another pro squad. The BJ's are an up and coming team and I predict next year will be a much tougher go against the boys from Columbus.)
Sunday finds the Preds in Detroit for a hockey matinées with the first place in the West Red Wings. Let me play conspiracy theorist for a moment if I can...let's say Detroit feels that they match up better against the Preds than Vancouver or Edmonton. Do they coast a bit tomorrow? Do they not play Datsyuk and Zetterberg quite as much? Do they leave Chelios out there for double shifts in hopes that the Preds can burn him? Am I crazy for thinking this way?
Obviously Ellis gets the start. Would really like to see some production from Radulov and Erat...we are going to need them big time!
This is a short post tonight...wanted to touch on those two things.
More on Monday...
Joe, I feel just the opposite. My bet is the Wings try to knock the Preds out. The Canucks are struggling and the Preds have beaten the Wings 3 times this season. A win by Nashville today makes a statement Detroit don't want to hear. Namely, we have beaten you 4 out of 8 games this season. The playoff series would be a toss up and anything can happen. Not exactly music to the ears of the Presidents Cup winners ears. I think the Wings would much rather face the Canucks and they will come out today with one thing in mind.....Keep Nashville out of the Playoffs..
I think the Wings definitely play to win, but not with reckless abandon. (For instance, they scratch someone who, while able to play, would be better off taking the time to heal.)
i agree on the premises of the comments rather than the writers conspiracy
