I know what you are thinking, the NHL isn’t going anywhere. I agree with you, I know it is here to stay as well, despite all of our WHA scares during the lock-out. What I am talking about is trying to save the NHL from becoming a marginal sport. We hockey fans have to realize that we are on the fringe of truly being a major North America sport. The negative part of t...
What a season for the Buffalo Sabres and fans. They have taken home the President Trophy as the top team in the National Hockey League throughout the regular season. They finished with 53 wins and 113 points. They will be playing the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday night puck drops at 7:08pm. This should be an interesting series. Ted N...
Ok, yes, I am a Rangers fan and this will probably be disregarded by most as a bias whine by someone who cannot see his team play Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs but I'm going to write about it anyway because frankly, bias or not, I think I'm right. I know Sid Crosby is supposed to be the second-coming of The Great One, I know, and I know the NHL needs a star that th...
For those of you outside of St. Louis, KSDK, the NBC affliate in St. Louis, has been the top news station in the market for decades. This past summer, they purchased the network TV rights to televise St Louis Cardinals games... and hockey fans (along with golf and tennis fans) are getting collectively screwed over in the process. Four times during the playoffs NBC's te...
Hey, I'm a Flames fan (you may have already guessed that tho). I'm a fan of the team that has been lambasted and generally scourged by almost every media outlet for the past 24hrs and frankly I'm tired of it. Perhaps this is the part where you gasp in surprise that I could even think to disagree that they deserved all this heaping on being done by the media but you k...
Hire a loudmouth, egotistical, jackanape former head coach, whose sole purpose as a broadcaster seems to be to hear himself talk, and put him by the glass. Why does NBC saddle a very good-outstanding, really-play-by-play and color team of Mike "Doc" Emrick and Ed Olczyk with Pierre McGuirre? Everytime McGuirre opens his mouth he's either stepping all over Emrick or Olc...
You have a third period full of questionable penatlies that won't be called in real hockey game and their Network dumps their sorry asses for horse race. it goes to show how popular NHL is really is and how screwed up this league is.
Well, we had an exciting playoff game, heading to overtime. Good game featuring two skilled teams, that were very evenly matched. However, NBC also owns the TV rights to a horse race, so a brief graphic and one time announcement at the end of regulation sent NHL fans scrambling to Versus. The problem is, Versus is not available throughout the US. In a brilliant move com...
After reading the passinate blog that TIm Panccio wrote about the hack job by NBC. Maybe TIm and other NHL writers start addressing the real problem in this league.. Gary Bettman There is only two writers who openly goes after Bettman on his mistakes and that guy is Larry Brooks of New York Post and then Toronto Sun NHL Writer Al Strachan. Al Strachan knew fr...

NHL on NBC (SHAMEFUL)

Posted Sunday | Comments 3
NHL on NBC Well I couldn't watch OT yesterday Buff/Ottawa on NBC and had to settle for crappy non Hi-Def TV on VS.. Bettman, you better start working harder on making this more of a main stream sport that us TRUE fans can watch without interruption! Also, get Mike "DOC" Emerick off the air when it comes to Detroit games. How can such an esteemed broadcaster with many...
From Neil Best from Newsday: "In an interview with WFAN, commissioner Gary Bettman said the broad audience was worth the risk of overtime, but he left open the possibility of rethinking the Saturday afternoon strategy next year." "Why not at least move the game to, say, MSNBC, which is in about 20 million fewer homes than NBC but 20 million more than Versus? Becau...
This blog is in responce to the Game 5 television dabacle on NBC. I am posting the E-Mail I sent to Seth Winter - NBC-Sports SVP of Sprots Programming just in case he decided not to return to work yesterday afternoon from a three martini lunch at Rainbow Room in Lower Manhatten. I did not want my outrage missed about NBC's programming decisions on Saturday. I think my s...

Time to Fire Bettman

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
I actually don't have a problem with NBC bailing on the hockey coverage on the weekend. It was a business decision plain and simple. Hockey gets a 1.3 rating and the Preakness gets 6.3. I would have made the decision to switch as well. Maybe not right away given post time was over an hour away but at some point. What I am upset about is how Bettman rolled over and just ...
Brett, you better start working on your script for the Stanley Cup Finals. You will be on TV for games 4-7. Try expanding your vocabulary, try eliminating the word TERRIBLE. Maybe you can write the Ducks off early and whine some more about the Red Wings and why they didn't make it to the finals. They played terrible for two periods tonight. Great game tonight, dominat...
The 49th parallel has never looked so significant. While Canadian fans were enjoying the standard high-quality broadcast from CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Saturday afternoon -- more on the afternoon part later -- fans south of the border were shut out as the Ottawa-Buffalo game went to overtime. You would think American-based fans would be used to this by now. After ...

Why are we waiting?

Posted Friday | Comments 0
So last Friday I was checking out the weekend schedule and I thought, "Great, Saturday in May must mean playoff hockey on Saturday night". Oops, no. The 2,000,000 or so perceived hockey fans in the US say the 20,000,000 fans in Canada had to watch hockey on Saturday afternoon. Ok, it's the third round, whatever. Good game, nice OT, Ottawa wins. Oh, you missed that in...
Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm a man of wealth and taste. So now that we've got the Stones reference done with, here's the basics: I'm Kevin. I've played hockey for nigh on 15 years now, and have loved the game ever since I first strapped on skates and went around Kirkwood Ice Arena in the St Louis suburbs. I idolized Gretz, Jagr and Hull when I was a kid, and...
Well, after a thrilling advertisement for the game of hockey that was Game One, we've come to this: a real crossroads, with Anaheim's old-fashioned physical play (honed by a lot of WHL talent like Getzlaf, Kunitz, the Niedermayers et al) going up against Ottawa's mostly-European speed and finesse (which is no slap against Selanne for the Ducks or Neil for the Sens). It's a...
For all the talk of Daniel Alfredsson's goal in game three, the issue of what a distinct kicking motion entails may be a moot point. After watching the replay dozens of times in super-slow motion on a top-quality HDTV, it appears the puck actually went in off Alfredsson's stick. Stationed to the left of Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Alfredsson directed t...
"It's a joke. It's a joke. It's been going on the whole series and the whole playoffs, that's a joke. Not one of those calls whether it was against Anaheim or against Ottawa was a penalty....they were bad calls and it's ridiculous at this point of the season that you have referees making these kind of bad calls....missing dives, making calls that aren't even penalties...Ra...

I agree with Hull and Cherry

Posted Tuesday | Comments 3
I have to say that I did like the segment after the 2nd period during game 4 last night with Don Cherry visiting the NBC booth. As far as the opinion of both Cherry and Brett Hull I have to agree that the majority would like to see fighting as part of the NHL and I do agree that ratings wouldn't suffer, but would be better if it was more common to see a little sparring...
Game 3, had less than 1 million viewers, with it peaking at a .08 Rating In the Final 30 mins of the game, with only 3 % of TV Viewers watching this game. Last year's game 3 got a 1.7 Rating. Down big time for a Saturday full of repeats or movies. Game 4 on the otherhand had a jump up to a 2.1 Rating (2.3 Million Viewers), with only 4 % of people watching TV...
The NHL and NBC can not like this.. The Ratings from game 4 to game 5 went DOWN. A 2.1 for Game 4 went down to a mere 1.8 for the final game is not good for either the NHL or NBC.. The ratings are obviosuly down big time from last years Cup Finals..

Mad Mike goes to NBC

Posted Friday | Comments 3
As per Newsday:
"I managed to survive that long against long odds," he said. "It was an interesting time on Long Island." Of the ownership turmoil, he cracked, "We were leading the league in convicted felons." That's the kind of funny, edgy line NBC is counting on from Milbury, who essentially will replace Brett Hull, another quote machine who left to work in ...

No more TV for Hull!!!???

Posted Wednesday | Comments 18
that is one step in the right direction for hockey. i no longer have to hear about how he won his cups, or ridiculous analogies or watch keith jones or chicken parm roll their eyes at his less than intelligent comments. this is good news.
Another sign that the 2007/2008 National Hockey League season is getting close is that the National TV schedules are starting to come out. The Buffalo Sabres have 7 games on versus which is 2nd most in the league behind Detroit. Versus Toronto Maple Leafs-10/15 Washington Capitals-11/26 Boston Bruins-12/10 Tampa Bay Lightning-1/29 Philadelphia Flyers-2/...

An "upbeat" rant about NBC

Posted Thursday | Comments 79
So here's the problem. When I am at school at Purdue University during the winter, there are very few times where I can watch hockey (I can't buy the Center-Ice package because I live in the dorms). NBC tends to be the only time I can realistically watch hockey, and I had no problem with NBC until this past season. My beef with NBC is their game selection. I probably ha...
The Canadian Press recently reported that NBC is using the ratings for the current Sunday hockey broadcasts to determine if they wish to continue regular hockey coverage in the future. Wonder what the ratings were yesterday? Apparently, NBC has forgotten that they used to cover the Daytona 500. Of course, in 2005 when the race left NBC and went elsewhere the ratings i...
It comes as no surprise that, once again, Pierre McGuire made an appalling and completely ridiculous comment that couldn't be farther from the truth. During the Flyers/Capitals broadcast yesterday on NBC, McGuire was asked if home-ice advantage would be an evident factor in the series. He answered "no" and then proceeded to say that the Verizon Center contained 1/2 Cap...

Message boards

Posted Monday | Comments 0
I think one of the most interesting things to me this year is how much trash people will leave on message boards under various sports site articles. Mostly because their ideas are one-sided and often presented in an abusive matter. Here it goes: ~ Pens fans...Sidney Crsoby is definately a talented guy, no one will argue you that. The reason no other teams will resp...
Thoughts heading into round two..... -- It's funny how things work out sometimes. The salary cap was supposed to mean every team had a chance of winning every year, and that has been the case. In the post-lockout NHL, no team that reached the Stanley Cup finals has advanced out of the first round the following season, but look a little deeper. In the Western Confe...
So the National Hockey League has released the schedule for this year's Stanley Cup Final: http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=SubseasonSchedule Now although there are 3 Saturday Night games, (CBC has to be jumping for joy!), I don't see a reason why we have to wait 5 whole days for this freakin series to start! I know the main reason is to accomo...

Time is Running Out

Posted Tuesday | Comments 7
It's been a great ride for the Penguins in the 2007-2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. These guys have shown a lot of heart and character over the course of the first 3 rounds...and even through two scoreless games of the finals. Even so, you can't help but get the feeling that time is running out on the Pens. Two shutout losses in Detroit have demonstrated how complete a...

"That Idiot Avery"

Posted Monday | Comments 0
I'm sure you all heard this during yesterday's Rangers vs Capitals game on NBC, when Mike Millbury came out and called Sean Avery an idiot, then the announcers had a good chuckle about it. So let me get this straight. It's cool for Millbury to call Avery an idiot on a channel 4, NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME but if Avery says "sloppy seconds" in Canada, it's a suspen...
Whether it be Pierre's and Milbury's red ties in game 5 and Milbury's red tie tonight. Or Pierre's and Olczyk's MULTIPLE assessments on the NUMEROUS times the Penguins should have been called for interference, or that the Red Wings should not have been called. Or them belaboring Malkin's cross check on Filppula when, a millisecond before, Kronwall planted [Fedotenko?]'s ...
I will be watching game 7 of tonight's Detroit vs. Pittsburgh game on NBC. Not CBC. Yes, it has taken me the entire season to get to this point. But I just can't hack it anymore. I love Ron MacLean. I LOVE Don Cherry; I mean, I don't always agree with him, but his segments are always entertaining and I appreciate his patriotism and his passion for hockey. He sa...
First off, while I love broadcasting legend Bob Cole, Mike Emrick of NBC and Devils radio is the best in the business at the moment. I love the creativity and dark tones Emrick brings to the games, while his sidekicks, Eddy Olczyk and Pierre Mcguire are always amusing and insightful. I say this as I enjoy taking in the NBC game of the week: Pens V. Caps! Sure to be a b...
