I realize that today is Christmas and the moment we wait for all year long...BUT... thanks to Eklund's insane love for hockey and, especially, his desire to include and reward the true fans of the game, I must first use this great new platform to honor the ALL-TIME GOAL SCORING AMERICAN! Stay tuned for more about the Stars playoff run...there is nothing better than getting different points of view from true fans!
Unlike many of you, I was late to the party. Growing up in a little town in west Texas, I knew nothing but football, basketball, and sometimes baseball. I moved to DFW in 1997 and by 1999, I was becoming interested in the Stars...nothing like winning the Cup to grab someone's attention! From that great moment in '99, I became like a snowball, watching more and more hockey each year, culminating into 3 straight years as a season ticket holder!
I don't have to convince you guys, hockey is like no other sport! And Mike Modano, is like no other player (American at least)!!! There is no better sight than watching #9's jersey "float" as he skates from one end to the other, thru 5 defenders, throw on the air brakes, and beat yet another goalie! Graceful and swift, he is one of the greatest skaters of all time. Because of the system and at the coaches' requests, he gave up the offense to become one of the best 2-way players in the game...and yet he still became the all-time American goal-scorer! I was forced to watch the record-tying/breaking goals on tv (against the class-less organization and fans of Nashville), but I was blessed to be at the AAC a few nights earlier when he scored #500! What a night it was--the place was packed and ready to celebrate. There was so much energy it felt like a playoff game. In fact, and the reason might have nothing to do with it, but Mike didn't play for the first 3 shifts of the game. And when #9 finally did hit the ice, the place erupted. Every single time he touched the ice, and every single time he touched the puck, the reaction was the same! And when the moment finally came, we didn't let him down--there was much rejoicing--it was raucous! If you watch the replay, you'll see Anti Miettinen skate from the other side of the net as if he was on a breakaway, to get over to Mike! This is a great picture of how we all felt--it was an honor to honor him!
Now I know there are lot of people, especially in Minnesota, who still hold a grudge against Mike and the Dallas Stars. Let me give you some reasons to let it go. The organization has done soooo much as far as building rinks and teaching the young...hockey is no longer an unknown to the youth of Texas. I am one of the countless hockey converts in this great state. Because of the move from Minnesota, I was able to find my true sports love. I am a season ticket holder and I purchase the NHL package on tv every year. I LOVE HOCKEY! The one and only reason for this is the emergence of the Dallas Stars led by the brilliance of Mike Modano.
Early next season Mike will become the all-time American points leader...and I will most certainly be in the house! It has been an honor and privilege to watch #9 every single night...I look forward to several more years of graceful, exciting, and all-around excellent hockey, from a man who is all class, on and off the ice!
CONGRATULATIONS, MICKEY MO!
