Im so sick reading from blogs and message boards of other teams complaining what my Philadelphia Flyers did before July 1.

Can someone please point to me in the CBA where it says where no transactions cant occur before UFA period begins? please?

People should be bowing themselves to Paul Holgram for what he did. He took a page out of the Bob Clarke School of Gm by cutting other teams in the throat during the free agency period aka Vancover canucks.

what Paul Holgram did was bold and flat out genius. He did his homework and implementing his plan turning a embrassing season of Flyers Hockey into the Good ol' Days of Flyers Hockey.

NHL needs the Flyers in playoffs.

Thank God HOckey is leaving Nashville........

I do think it was a great move for Philly to lock up two great players before FA period begins, but they have seriously overpaid for the services of two players that aren't worth the amount of cap space they will eat for the next few years. Despite the fact that I think Philly is headed in the right direction for next season, I think the moves will come back and bite them a few years down the road. Isn't the Philly gm Paul Holmgren... not Holgram?

to nickzak, yeah it is holmgren not Holgrambut you use running sentences, my point is that this is a hockey website, not an english class.

I don't see why anyone would have a problem with what the Flyers did. Good for them. They paid for it so dearly though, these guys really wanted to be unrestricted free agents and thus, I think the Flyers overpaid Hartnell horribly. Timonen is a great signing, he's the one I thought would get a little more.

I'm not trying to teach english, I'm trying to find out who Paul Holgram is? I support the moves Philly made and I think Holmgren is a smart guy to do what he did. Just saying that the moves will become a problem later down the road. Say Philly misses the playoffs again, whose going to be the fallguy? You've now got 10 million dollars locked up on two guys...

Obviously Homer is paying Hartnell more because of his potential. I have not seen him play, but he's young and Homer knows a thing or two about scouting players...he scouts the young guys himself, since I've read he enjoys doing that. Did that under Clarke too, apparently. Anyways, this could be a good deal, a great deal, or a bad deal with respect to Hartnell...it all depends on how he performs. The way Homer has pulled trades so far, he's earned my trust. We'll just have to wait and see just how good or bad this deal really was. Right now, I have no reason to believe it was any worse than a very good deal.

One more thing I should add is that Homer has stated that he personally has really liked Hartnell since his first year in the NHL. Guess he's had his sights on him for a while. If he knows what he's going to get with him, then it shouldn't be a big issue overpaying him a bit. As I said before though, we'll just have to wait and see

If trading a first round draft choice for a chance to overpay for over-rated players is genius, then he's a genius.

To billcanuck: Had they not signed with the Flyers within the 72-hour window, there would have been no trade. The draft pick was contingent on signing the two players. There's no such thing as a trade of a draft pick for "negotiations".

I think the trade was great move by PHI. The contracts that they signed, not so much. Especially now that Walker has re-signed for less than half of Hartnell's deal. PHI will have to try to win right now because those cap hits are going to be hell when Carter and Richards have to re-sign.

Beliveau,When Carter and Richards have to re-sign Hatcher's deal will be up, Rathje's money will be freed up as well with retirement looming. The Flyers will be able sign them no problem.

But then you need replacements on D. Can they be farmed for entry level contracts or do you have to replace Hatcher and Rathje via trade or UFA?

"Scott Hartnell is apart of a bigger problem......" Remember that post. Hypocrite. You over payed for both players. I do find it annoying how not only do people whine about the move by Holmgren, but every post now has to do with trading a player for the "rights" to negotiate. It was a smart (revolutionary for post lockout world) move by Holmgren, but he did over pay for both players.

Heater, the Flyers currently have the following on D in their system:K TimonenJ TimonenHatcherPitkanenCoburnParentJonesPicardGueninGauthierAlong with Rathje, who will likely never play again, and a couple other lesser players. If anything, we have too many D-men for the number of spots available on the big club, and even when Hatcher and Gauthier move on, we should be fine.
