I was going to do Part 3 on Dale Hawerchuk but since it seems appropriate I thought I would do it on Mr.Pierre Turgeon.

Turgeon's 91-92 career pretty much was a wash with the Sabres but ended strong with the Islanders since he was part of a trade for Pat LaFontaine........... and since I am pretty much just going around with remembering the players that played in 91-92 I am going to cheat and just speak in general about Pierre since technically he played 8 games for the Sabres that year.

His career with the Sabres started as the number 1 pick overall in the 1987 Entry draft. If you remember back in 87 can you remember who was drafted 2nd overall without looking/cheating? I bet you can't! Unless your name is Scoop I am pretty sure you're saying " That's so long ago! How could I remember that minor detail?". Well I cheated and found out and it was an interesting thing to find out. Brendan Shanahan was 2nd overall chosen by New Jersey. Anyways this is about Pierre so let me get back on track here.

Pierre was drafted in 87. His statistics weren't too bad for a rookie season with 14 Goals 28 assists and 42 points for the season. Pierre was part of something special with the Sabres. His breakout year with the Sabres was in 92-93 with ending the season with a whopping 132 points. Pierre carried himself well off the ice as well as on the ice. It seems to me that the 91-92 Sabres roster actually did a lot for the community. I am not going to put anything side the guys we have now and what they do for our community but the 91-92 roster seemed very close to each other.

I met a lot of Sabres growing up, especially the 91-92 roster which is why I like the roster so much because I have experienced the players themselves at their young career primes. I met Pierre in early 1991 at a Glad Bag' Athon that my mother took me to. I remember my mother actually hitting on him too which is funny considering I didn't realize what she was doing at that age. I was like 8 years old or so, heck I didn't even consider my mom as a "girl" back then, she was just mom. Come to think of it... my mom did a lot of charity work and I'm now wondering if it was because she wanted to do the charity work or meet the Sabres.

When I met him at the charity event (Man I went to so many as a child it was ridiculous) he sat and talked with me and a few other kids about hockey and what to do in certain situations. I remember distinctly when I asked him about pulling someone's jersey over their head and punching them. As a kid that was the most intense thing to watch about hockey. He told me that was invented by Rob Ray and that no one else can use it so I shouldn't fight at all. I felt a bit embarrassed but of course I always said stupid things growing up, and I still do from time to time.

I want to wish Pierre the best with his retirement he was the 34th person to score 500 goals in a career in the NHL back in 2005 and I hope to see him still contribute to the organization and quite possibly come back to Buffalo if this seemed as a home to him. On a side note, I hope Pierre remembers the good that he had with all the organizations he has been with and forgets the people that ruin hockey such as Dale Hunter.

Cheers to you Pierre, and good luck

Being a Sabres fan, but not living in the Buffalo area for the past 38 years this September 5, I was not aware of Turgeon's contributions to the community. From my vantage point, I was only aware of the Sabres ineptitude in the playoffs.Great players are fine, but if the team doesn't win, they quickly lose their panache with me. It's the team that matters; all others are secondary.Remember, it's all about money and power, just ask Rieger, Gollisimo, Drury and Biere to mention a few.We fans are secondary, so let's not wax sentimentally about wealthy, spoiled athletes and their keepers.
