When you think of the word Captain for the sabres, you think without a doubt the likes of Chris Drury and Danny Briere from last year. When you think for this coming season who will be the captain you are left wondering who would be the best to fit the role. Would there be another co-captain duo this year as there was last year? My guess would be as good as yours. However, if you think about what duo captains would do might sound more logical.

Since the Sabres are a fairly young bunch of players you would naturall think Teppo would be the captain due to the years he has under his belt. However, to me that doesn't matter if you aren't captain material. Here's a list of who would be worthy of the "C" on their shirts and why they would be the one to possibly achieve the status of leading the team into the 2007-2008 season.

In no particular order....

1.) Jason Pominville:

The "Welcome to Pominville" sign across the "Welcome to Buffalo" sign says a lot of what impact he had made last year in the regular season and the playoffs. Jason played 82 games and scored 34 goals and 34 assists with ending he season with 68 points and a +/- of 25. He was an impact player that started to show leadership skills at a young age. I think that he should be given the opportunity to come out of his shell and lead this young team with is passion and excellent worth ethic. Pominville has also been training over the offseason with a few select Sabres, working on the ice a few times a week. I think even though he is young, he is ready to step up not only be the excellent player he is, but a voice in the Sabres locker room.

2.) Brian Campbell:

Campbell is a veteran in the NHL. When it comes to leadership and maturity Brian is someone that fits the quality of a captain perfectly. Last season Campbell didn't miss one game, and had an impressive 48 point finish for the season. Not only did he perform during the regular season but he has performed in the playoffs as well with 3 goals and 4 assists. Campbell is ready to become a voice of the sabres as he has shown to be a good leader by also giving back to the community. He has done a lot for the Buffalo community for charity events year round. He has paid his dues and should be in the running to become captain of our young, vibrant team.

3.) Jochen Hecht:

Jochen had a pretty good year last year. 56 points to end the season, a veteran of the league and a strong presence in the Sabres locker room. He isn't one of my top picks here but I think that he should wear the "A" if not the "C". I think that Hecht is of sound mind and has a wonderful eye on the ice where his expertise can help the younger players through any struggles they may have.

I think these 3 should be the top picks for wearing the "C" for the 2007-2008 season. Who knows though, someone might surprise Ruff beforehand and completely turn 180 with their attitude and maturity level. Time will tell folks. Cheers!

What about Connoly? Solid player, has the "intangibles" (or so it would seem.)

Injury prone. I would say he would be the number one fit for the position, but I think that he has to prove he won't get hurt to be there for the team more. Good point though Mob.

i dont think pommer is ready to be a captain yet, i cant see him leading over many other players. I think teppo should have some consideration seeing as hes truely a person everyone looks up to on the team, however he wont be here much longer so I can see Ruff and company going with someone who will take them into the future such as campbell....it should be interesting, im still one of the fans hoping sabres and peca work something out because he is a true captain and i know he would be the perfect captain for this team regardless of what happened in the past

Hecht should definitely get consideration. I'm not sure Pommer would be the best choice. I candidate I think would be good is Connolly, like mob suggested.

I agree Peca would be the undenyable captain. I think out of my list though would be Campbell as the front runner. I think Pominville could be ready. He's young and that's what leaves negative thoughts in people's minds I think. I think he did very well and from what I heard last year he speaks like a leader. It's hard to do though when you have Briere and Drury as leaders... you pretty much have no room to speak because there's nothing else to be said for the most part.I think Connolly would be great, but he has to produce more by not getting injured. I think to prove to be a captain you not only have to have a voice in the locker room, but you have to show up to games as well. I am not putting him down because he is one of the most talented people on the ice. He just needs to work on not getting concussions now.
