The Canadiens have completed an improbable (some might have said a week ago that it was "impossible" ) comeback from down 3-1 to defeat the Washington Capitals 4 games to 3.
In so many ways, it really was a case of David slaying Goliath.
To defeat a powerful offensive club like the Capitals takes a lot of hard work and determination.
To do it with a team that is much smaller in size, not as deep in offensive talent and already down 3 games to 1 is just short of a miracle.
Of course, we all know that Jaroslav Halak is one of the main reasons the Habs were able to advance. He put on a show that people will remember and talk about for years to come.
But beyond that, the Canadiens have truly bought into the idea that they can win in these playoffs.
You see all those signs at arenas around the league that fans hold up, urging themselves and their teams to "BELIEVE".
Right now, the Canadiens really do BELIEVE.
And that makes them a VERY DANGEROUS team for the Penguins to face in Round 2.
The Habs have been playing "playoff hockey" for well over a month now and it could be argued that they are getting better at it every day.
They are playing a complete team game and are getting the kind of goaltending you need to win games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It would seem to me, that the Penguins will need to get to "their game" early and often, if they wish to advance another round. The Habs will likely not play as physical against the Pens as the senators did...but it's important for the Penguins to play physical against the Habs.
IF the Pens can do that, then surely they will give the Habs something they did not see against the Capitals...a team that is willing and able to do the dirty work down low to control the flow of the game and get the goals the Capitals couldn't.
But, as I write this today, I am convinced that is a very big IF.
This series should be fun...
Congratulations Canadiens...on a well deserved victory!
GAME ON!
Halak is an absolute stud, but he can't keep it up forever. Montreal was outshot 134-66 over the last three games of the series, and I cannot imagine that they can win 4 of 7 if that trend continues. Including the fact that they are blocking about as many shots as they let through...
... it is only a matter of time before fluke injuries or fluke goals start occurring. You can't get outshot more than 2>1 in every game you play and expect to win a whole series. All credit to them for beating Washington, but they are going to need to control the play more if they want to win against Pittsburgh.
The Pens won't panic like Washington. The Caps had a chance to close this out in Game 5 and came out flat -- they gave the Habs life, couldn't handle Game 6 in Montreal, and you could just feel how tight they were last night when they didn't score early. I see the Pens winning this series in 4 or 5 games -- hope I'm wrong, though.
