I bet you're wondering what I am talking about and saying to yourself "No one uses Time on Ice as a strategy for fantasy Hockey...." In my league we have just announced a statistic that will now become a strategy for our hockey team owners. This has been worked out to detail and such but is still actually being worked on to tweak out the bugs.
Who played the most in the NHL last year amongst players? I'll give you one guess. Are you done guessing? If you guessed Zdeno Chara then you were correct! His minutes on ice totaled to be 2,237:19 minutes and that was in 80 games played out of 82 for the season.
We have implemented a statistic that can make or break a team with Time on Ice. Here is how it works.
Each team gets a maximum of 275 minutes time on ice for their head to head match for the week for their starting line. This excludes the goaltender. Once your starting line has reached 275 minutes, your entire team stops gaining points for the remainder of the week including your goaltender and your bench. Your 3 players on your bench do not count towards your 275 minutes, only your starting 5 players count toward minutes on ice.
You are probably asking what is the bench players roll in the team now. The 3 bench players you pick for that weeks head to head match do not count toward your Time on Ice for your team. The catch to that is they only get half the points as if they would get if they were on the ice.
The strategy here for this TOI is that people will have to look at schedules and see who is playing a lot of games that week and manage the team on how many minutes each player will project to get that week. Once you hit the 275 minutes total for your starting line, your team shuts down and stops scoring points until the next head to head match the following week. What this does is it gets the owners of the teams to not get bored with the same old lines they might play.
As far as I know this is one of a kind and the idea hasn't been seen before by anyone in my league.
It's a very interesting statistic to be used as a strategy and I thought I would share it all with you to see what you all thought.
Cheers
sounds interesting. i hate the points being awarded by average earned per game as some leagues do, rather than total points earned,. i always thought having to decide between a top player that only has 2 games that week versus playing a decent player that has 4 games is way more interesting
Yeah it is very interesting and it keeps people thinking all year too. Especially when people start getting injured and such.
What website can you run this rule on?
It's run on my website for my league I started. If you want information on it PM me.
Interesting concept. I guess you could expand the total number of minutes to accommodate a deeper roster league, which I prefer since it forces you to get down to the third line guys. Good idea though.
