I was sitting back watching the Blackhawks last night and decided to do my daily statistical update for my own personal knowledge. For the first time this year I decided to look and see who is leading this years rookie class in the NHL and low and behold Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are standing above all other rookies in points this year thus far.

I'm sure there are opinions out there that boast the fact that it's still early in the season and that other things are looked into when it comes to winning the Calder Memorial Trophy other than just scoring points. That may be true, however, you can't overlook the fact of performance showing within the numbers of what that player has done to win games and take responsibility of winning those games by creating the points on the scoreboard for their team, day in and day out. The real question is, Toews missed a few games with a broken finger and consequently Kane has produced more points than Toews up until right now. Toews is catching up at a wonderful pace which is leading me to believe if Kane goes on a cold streak for too long in the season, then Toews will surpass him.

As everyone knows most of the leagues leading point scorers are Centers, which they sit at a little more than 50% accountable for leading the league as a position.
Toews has a lot of wonderful experience in playing with team Canada as well as posting 110 points in his prep school league in 64 games and averaging 1.72 points per game at age 16. He's a natural leader and has proven that to his coaching staff by being rewarded the Alternate Captain this past monday.

The number one pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Patrick Kane. After hearing Kane was drafted a huge buzz hit here in Buffalo, NY. He's a South Buffalo native that picked up his first hockey stick in Buffalo. As an American and a Buffalo native it's extra special to see this kid succeed like he has been and will be in the future. When he played for the London Knights he gathered 145 points in 58 games before coming to the NHL. He averaged 2.5 points per game which clearly was a wonderful deciding factor to make him the overall number one pick in the draft.

I for one will be enjoying these two play for years to come, but this year will be even more wonderful as they evolve to the NHL over the season. They already seem as if they are comfortable. With their work ethics the Calder Trophy winner will deserve it whoever they are. To beat out these two young enigmas will be a feat in itself, but anything can happen.

Cheers!

You could also check out an Oiler game especially one with a shootout to see Gagner's magic.

Kane and Toews are hands down the best rookies in the league. Kane should be a Flyer right now, thanks NHL for your bogus lottery strategy.

Imagine Kane and Briere together, that would be pretty insane.

Tobias Enstrom. Check him out if you haven't. He is a hugely impressive D-man hidden away here in Atlanta. He leads all rookies and The Thrashers in ToI (yeah, he skates more than Kovulchuk).

To be honest with you, it will come down to Toews or Kane for the Calder. It's all just a toss up in the end. Toews is a well balanced scoring and play maker. Kane is just a fiery offensive spark for the Hawks. I think we'll see Kane take it because his progression will eventually overtake Toews on the scoring level after the All-Star break.

Backstrom isn't consistant as Kane or Toews.

Tasteofflames, I agree he's great, but if you think about it, Kane and Toews average around 19 minutes per game and put up the points they do. I understand Defensemen are naturally on the ice more than any forward. Enstrom has a chance too I would say, but not as much as Kane or Toews.Price has been impressive but he's not rookie of the year.
