It's great when your team hands out an old fashioned ass-whompin'. It's better when they do it to a division rival. It's even better when that rival is loaded with hypocritical, whining clowns.
The Flyers utterly destroyed the Pittsburgh Penguins last night in South Philadelphia. The line of Mike Richards, Joffrey Lupul and RJ Umberger combined for ten even strength points and and tagged Sidney Crosby with an ugly -3. Lupul and Umberger each had a hat trick. Richards had three assists and was a defensive force. Lupul finished with 6 points and Umberger had 5.
Marty Biron had a strong outing in goal, and outside of two poor penalty kills in the first period the Flyers defense was very solid, too.
The game almost got out of hand in the third period. The Pens were down 5-2, so they decided to start being physical. That managed to include stickwork and hits from behind as well as tripping the Flyers goalie and then taking a shot at his knees.
The Flyers, the NHL poster boys for dirty play, kept it clean. They responded to the Pens chippiness by being willing to man up and fight, yet didn't repeat the issues they had in past games this season. It was refreshing to see, especially for me as I have been calling on the Flyers to play smarter all season long.
Flyers coach John Stevens wasn't happy following the game, pointing out that a few Pens broke their sticks in slashing Flayers, and continued to try and goad the Flyers with less than sportsmanlike behavior.
Pens coach Michel Therrien responded in much the same way Sidney Crosby responds to most on ice activities....with a fine whine.
"Are we talking about the same team that had five players suspended this year? It's a lack of respect to do what he did. You don't send your best power play on the ice at 7-2." Therrien said, when told of Stevens' comments.
Well, Flyers' beat writer Tim Panaccio dug out his game notes from a few games last year, where the Pens had lumped up the hapless Flyers. Panotch found instances of the Pens running their top PP unit when the game was 5-1. My question is, is Therrien the pot or the kettle?
Another good story line from last night was the continuation of the Sidney Crosby-Mike Richards war of the words. Unfortunately, Sid didn't back up his mouth with his fists or his play last night. Even though Rob Parent named him one of the games three stars, Crosby's biggest effect on this game was giving the raucous Philly crowd a whipping boy.
Crosby is a great player, but he needs to grow up. Michel Therrien is a subpar coach. He needs to find a new line of work.
I really enjoyed the war of words between biron and crosby
Nice work. If I had missed the game last night I would be angry today. That was one of the best games I have seen all season. Not just because I am a Flyers fan, but because I am a fan of the "old NHL" rough and tough style game.
Agreed. Crosby cried a river when Toskala tripped him running through his crease.
The Richards Crosby battle is going to be tremendous to watch 8 times a year, 4 times live for the next like 5 years. It could become one of the greatest player on player rivals in NHL history since both players are expected to stay on their respective teams and wear the C for a long time. I can't wait till the next game
The new schedule will reduce the number of divisional games from 8 to 6, so that will limit the interaction between Sid and Richie, but hopefully that won't hurt the hate they have for each other.
I'm not one to cheer for Philly, but I really like this Mike Richards guy and what a game you guys played! Richard's showing the entire league how to get Cindy Crosby off his game. I love skilled players (Ovechkin, Lecavalier, Nash etc) but I don't have it in me to cheer for a hockey player who goes down and whines more than a soccer player. Crosby's antics make me sick, Gary Roberts really needs to chew him out and tell him to stop acting like that.
This is going to be a fun rivalry for years. To Crosby's whining: He IS maturing; he's learning that it really doesn't pay in the long run. He was very vocal in complaining his first season and I think the refs got tired of it, and that reputation with refs follows him to this day. This is one of the reasons, I feel, that he doesn't get all calls he thinks he should. I may be mistaken, but didn't Sid receive a diving penalty during one of the Flys/Pens games last season?
my goodness... want to talk about whining, then look in the mirror. The Flyers win and play one of the best games they have played in 2 years, and you have nothing better to do than expose your jealousy of a player who has done more positive publicity for the NHL than any Flyer ever has. Writers like you are perpetuating the negativity that the NHL is trying so hard to leave behind. Why not trying to be gracious in your next victory.
We can't be gracious while the other team is trashing us on and off the ice. Pay attention to what's going on. If Sid is the new face of the NHL than I hope he grows up fast because with all his talent on the ice the last thing he needs to do is run around kicking the skates from under goalies then hurling expletives at fans from the bench including flipping them the bird. Doesn't the NFL and MLB and the NBA fine heavily players who do that on the playing surface? Why yes they do. Do you think a heavy fine for Sidney is forth coming and will receive massive media coverage across Canada? Let me answer that: NO! Oh if only Ovechkin was born in Kitchner, ON.
Dont worry, I am aware of whats going on - you are blowing things out of proportion.
Gross1: I believe it was Michel Therrien and the Pens that perpetuated the negativity last night. I am simply commenting on what I see from Sidney Crosby every time I watch the Pens play. If you don't like it, fine, I honestly couldn't care less what you think.
Gross1: Every time I have seen Sydney play live (about 10 times now) I have seen the same thing...a lot of jawing for a guy who doesn't need to.If the NHL wants this guy to be the poster of the league, he needs to be taught that he can beat teams with his stick, not try to get involved in the extra-curricular parts of the game. If I wansn't a fan of the game, and I saw a guy like him being toted around like the second coming of Jesus, I would be appauled. I was at the game last night, and saw him yelling at the fans behind the bench. You would expect that out of Tie Domi, right? I don't ever remember Gretzky doing that. Or Lemieux. Or any superstar caliber hockey player. That was a shame to see. He is too good for that junk.
JS, would you happen to know the vintage of that 'Fine Whine'? You know, Christmas, relatives and all....
Flyers fans need to stop feeding the trolls around here. This already seems to be day 2 of trolling the Flyers in the NHL. I know it's hard not to since EVERY team in the NHL (minus Chicago an Phoenix) talked loads of trash on us last year but come on!!! We need unity, focus and a nice long win streak to drive these bungholes out. Anyway, it's a big game tonight against the Habs, hense the appearance of the Habs troll on this blog.
Chateau Le Girl, 1987, Blueline
Great writing js. That is why I am a huge AO fan. he does everything right. he hits he fights and he scores. The NHL should work its campaign around him and Vinny not crosby. He could be such a great player if he just stopped the whine and played the game.

Great blog, JS. Do you think Ed Olczyk is pining for his old job? Sounded like it the way he called a one-sided game.http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20040304/olczyk_82545.jpg
Thanks for the clarification JS. Someone else had suggested that it was Chateau Le Jolie Petite Fille. (Not sure how accurate my bable fish derived French is, but I tried.) Great to do the "lighten up" isn't it?
Therrien needs to get over it. If my team can put up 8 goals, I'm all for it. Hell, at this point, if the Isles could put up 4 goals, I'd sh!t a brick!
