That was the worst finish I've ever seen in my life for a series-clinching game in the NHL playoffs. What a joke! All the many calls let go and the linesman decides to make that ridiculous call at that critical moment of the game. Pathetic! The Blue Jackets deserved better. The linesmen should be embarrassed ... the refs should be embarrassed ... and the league should be embarrassed. I'm not against Detroit winning ... but they were handed the series on a silver platter. Awful!

you have to use both hands to count to six. It is a penalty if the player coming on to the ice PLAYS THE PUCK before the skater he is replacing is OFF THE ICE. Especially with the linesman standing right there.It diminishes the great effort Columbus put in tonight to whine about the officiating. You should be more concerned about Ohio fans throwing cans and other trash onto the ice toward the end of the game. Unless this is the start of a Columbus playoff tradition to compete with the octopus toss...

So is interferrence still a penalty? I'm quite certain I don't need a lesson on the definition of "too many men on the ice." The legitimate penalty was never an issue. The fact that they called it then and there, after everything else they let go, is the issue. I know its really unlikely that you'll fully comprehend this explanation, considering you're currently "loving" on an octopus in celebration ... but there it is none the less!

it's like putting the puck over the glass from the d zone....even though people hate the penalty, it is not a judgement call like hooking or tripping. if the player was dumb enough to touch the puck before his teammate came off the ice, they deserved to lose. fans can boo and throw things, but the refs made the right call.

you can probably count a few times a game where it happens though, and doesnt get called. at that point in a series ending game, in which it had no effect on the play (like stopping the wings from getting a 2 on 1), there is no reason to make the call. it is a lot more of a judgement call than delay of game for puck over the glass from the d zone.

There isn't a single penalty that isn't a judgement call, even the dreaded high stick (which they normally get right). The fact is, again, it was clearly a penalty ... BUT ... they let numerous penalties go, as they always do, and instead chose to serve up the series to the Wings at that critical moment. Simply put, I think its embarrassing to not let the men decide it ... especially in a game where they fought their butts off to stay alive.

Sorry, but when the guy coming onto the ice plays the puck before the guy he's replacing gets off the ice the ref is forced to make the call. It's not a judgment call at that point, and when it's allowed to slide it's because a player OTHER than the one coming onto the ice played the puck. It was the right call. If Columbus wanted to win that game they shouldn't have allowed 6 goals against. That penalty didn't lose the game for them.

If that is honestly the case, then why all the un-called penalties? Why does one obvious penalty get called and not another? There is no question it was a penalty (is there an echo?!), but its simply unfair to make the call at that point. Simple.

Anybody know which linesman made the call? #89 - Steve Miller or #92 - Mark Shewchyk? I'd be very curios to see how many more games he calls in the playoffs. Would anyone else move to my side if he didn't make it to the next round?

(I have no idea why I have trouble posting comments - sorry for the blanks). According to today's Columbus Dispatch Former NHL linesman Kevin Collins was in attendance working as a league supervisor of officials. Collins was asked if he would make the same ruling "Every time, it's automatic," Collins said. "How could I live with myself if I didn't make that call? All (Modin) had to do was let the puck go and there is no whistle." The Defense rests. Time to move on to Round 2.

Anne - you are purposely missing the point. Of course they are going to defend the desicion! How can they not? The fact is, however, they let sooooo many other calls go.

Im a leafs fan and I use to watch Mason when he played for the Peach Kings, i wanted the Jackets to win...but that was clearly Too many men on the ice. The Wings were just to much for them.

Was it a penalty?....Yes Should it have been called and cost a team their season?......probably not. It's like the shooting the puck over the boards penalty, which I think should be based on whether or not it's done on purpose. Too bad you had to lose on a bad penalty that maybe should have gone un-called

You would have a stronger case if you were complaining that the play should have been called because of the wings playing it with a high stick. They showed it on tsn before switching back to the devils game.

I really don't think the refs did a bad job the whole game and the too many men on the ice penalty was very legit. This coming from an Avs fan who would love nothing more than seeing Detroit lose.
