The Leafs Defense

Posted 6:57 PM ET | Comments 2
The Leafs find themselves in a interesting situation on defense as they have 9 defensemen on their roster and will need to clear a couple within a few weeks once Jeff Finger returns. Leafs 1st rounder Luke Scheen has not looked out of place in the big leagues even if he looked a tad slow against Montreal yesterday. Frogren also had a tough night but he has an edge to him which the Leafs have lacked over the past few seasons. Colaiacovo has not looked very sharp this season and that includes the pre season while Stralman brings the offense but not the defense that coach Ron Wilson is looking for, so the question is very simple who stays and who goes? Kaberle, Kubina and Finger are in, now who is on the outs is the question. The easiest thing to do would be to send Scheen back to juniors to work on some of his offensive game and watch him lead the Canadian juniors this xmas, while also sending Stralman to the Marlies to work on his defensive game as he does not need to clear waivers. That would leave the Leafs with Kaberle, Kubina, Finger, Van Ryan, Frogren and Colaiacovo as the starting six with Ian White in the pressbox. I think this move makes sense and the Leafs keep everyone in case of an injury where you will need to call a few Marlies up which include Stralman, Kronvall, Petoit or Boumedienne. I know that alot of Leaf fans i have spoken to would like to see Scheen stay in the big leagues but do we really need to expose the kid to a team that many predict to be lousy when he can head to Kelowna and play with a competitive team?

Yeah, those moves make perfect sense. But with the way things go they'll probably send down Colaiacovo... yeesh.
