Lets start off by wishing everyone a great 2009 and for Leaf fans a very interesting time as Brian Burke has had just about a month to evaluate the team and could be primed for some moves.
The question is who can you see Burkie trade package or waive as he continues the rebuilding process that Fletcher has commenced.

Here is a player by player breakdown of what might be:

Vesa Toskala- If Toskala can regain some of his confidence should be moved to a playoff fighting team ex. Detroit, Edmonton, Washington or even a team with an injured starter ala New Jersey, Vancouver. Toskala should fetch the Leafs a 1st rounder and prospect. Verdict- Will be moved.

Curtis Joseph- Retirement enough said.

Justin Pogge- Leafs future # 1 goalie needs to prove that trading Rask was correct move. Verdict- Future Starter.

Ian White- With a backlog on the defense White may stay or go, look for Burke to test the waters to see what White may bring a marginal prospect or middle round pick. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Tomas Kaberle- Wont be asked to waive his NTC but Burke will let him know what teams are interested in his services. Kaberle is the one Leaf player who could fetch the most in a trade from 1st rounder to a established forward and prospect. A bidding war for his services would only benefit Leafs. Verdict- Will be moved.

Pavel Kubina- Another leaf with a NTC his leadership is valuable to the team and unless Toronto acquires a powerplay defensemen doesnt look to be going anywear if Kaberle is moved. Would fetch a few prospects. Verdict- Kubina will be gone if Kaberle stays.

Mike Van Ryn- If he can stay healthy is a valuable addition to team, Burke may esnt to find out what Ryn would fetch but would be surprised if he wear dealt. Verdict- Staying put.

Jeff Finger- You dont notice him out there too often which means he is doing his job, one of Wilson's go to D men. Verdict- Staying put.

Jonas Frogren- A good 5th, 6th or 7th defensemen, has a mean streak that Leafs were lacking last season. Verdcit- Staying put.

Anton Stralman- Needs to smarten up in the defensive zone but is too young and has potential to give up on. Verdict- Staying put.

Luke Schenn- Will be here a long time.

Jaime Sifers- Has not looked out of place playing for the team. Verdict- Will be given a spot in starting six once Burke moves two defensemen.

Steffan Kronvall- Has not been able to crack the roster with a log jam doesnt look like he will. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Nik Antropov- His pending UFA at seasons end makes for a diffcult situation if keeps up his game will be attractive acquisition for playoff contender. Possible 1st or 2nd rounder depending on desperation of teams looking to acquire him. Verdict- Will be moved.

Matt Stajan- Stajan has shown he can play when given ice time although not a # 1 center can be moved to the wing if the team wants. Verdict- Staying put.

Nik Hagman- One of the Leafs best forwards this season, he is a threat almost every shift, one of Fletcher's top moves this off season. Verdict- Staying put.

Nikolai Kulemin- Has nose for the net can only get better. Kulemin best Leaf forward pick in a long time. Verdict- Staying put.

Alexei Ponikarovsky- Big presence and has proven can play without Sundin but can he without Antropov?. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Mikhail Grabovski- Leafs most gifted forward has impressed fans all over the league. Verdict- Top 2 centerman for a long while.

Jason Blake- His game has improved of late which is good news for the Leafs might get someone interested in taking this contract. Verdict- Will be gone if they find a suitor.

Dominic Moore- Leafs hardest working forward has earned his ice time. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Jeremy Williams- As long as he works hard a potential 30 goal man Top 6 forward. Verdict- Staying put

Jiri Tlusty- Will get his chance to show what he has got. Verdict- Staying put

John Mitchell- Has shown he can play in league, potential there if given more ice time to put up points. Verdict- Staying put

Ryan Hollweg- an Energy guy who may be expandable with emergence of Deveaux. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Jamal Mayers- does the job hes asked to do, veteran presence on a young team. Verdict- Staying put

Andre Deveaux- Another role player who has done his job when asked but Burke may be looking for a more established tough guy. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Lee Stempniak- Big contract for little production but has only played 17 games for team, a few new forwards may rejuvenate this former 27 goal scorer. Verdict- Will be dangled as part of package.

Robbie Earl- He is just waiting his turn on the Marlies, teams fastest skater. Verdict- Staying put.

The key is rebuilding and the Leafs could potential walk into the 2009 draft with not only their first round pick but an additional two from trading Kaberle, Antropov, Toskala. The question for Burke is would he package two or all three depending where the Leafs finish to move up in the draft and obtain either Tavares or Hedman. Watching the World Juniors you can see that both have the potential to be franchise players for a long time.

What would you like to see the Leafs do?

Would you like to see the Leafs move up in the draft to obtain Tavares or Hedman?

As 2009 rings in some Leaf players on the current roster will be ringing out before the season wraps up.

It's funny. I did the same thing yesterday at work, trying to figure out who would be moved. I think Stajan will be moved, and same with Van Ryn and Kubina regardless of whether Kaberle gets moved. I also wouldn't rule out Tlusty or Williams being packaged.

what would you want for kaberle or kubina that the devils have to offer???

I think that by the start of the 09-10 season both Kubina and Kaberle will be moved. I also believe that Antropov and Ponikarovsky will be moved by the deadline. As for what I'd want from NJ for Kubina I want a 1st OR a 2nd and Clarkson and fro Kaberle I want a 1st, 4th and Zajac OR a 1st and Parise. Seems a bit steep but NJ prospect pool is not too deep.

Excellent blog, and a very happy new years to everyone. I'd love to see some moves for draft picks this year. I cant help but think that if the leafs make all three moves (Antropov, Toskola and Kaberlie) they'll end up having a very high draft pick as it is. I personally think 3 top 10 picks are better than the first overall... even in this year's draft (i know, TAVERES AND HEDMAN ARE SOO GOOD THOUGH...but still). And i dont think Parise would ever go anywhere, and for him to be packaged with a 1st it would have to be Ovechkin or Malkin coming back lol.

I wouldn't trade Dominic Moore because he's probaby one of the few guys who are working their butts off out on the ice. I also wouldn't trade Ryan Hollweg, and I don't think Burke will either because Burke likes a team that can score what also a team that has a couple of player that arn't afraid to drop the gloves. Ryan Hollweg is a small and tough guy, he reminds me of Darcy Tucker.

What would a team have to give up for Antropov? I've seen him play, a few times, and think he would fit good with the Preds.

i would love to see the preds make a big deal with toronto for antropov, blake, and ponikarovsky for maybe legwand, rights to radulov, youngster of their choice and a 1st or 2nd rounder

bryjes1 I'm sure Burke would love you lol. I would love to see that happen. Though i'm not sure Burke would want to gamble with Radulov... something about Burke's demeanour tells me that he doesn't have much patience for disloyal europeans. Its a damn shame he did what he did though, i'm sure he would have been an amazing addition to the Preds.

Parise would be ideal but not going to happen, but can see kaberle or kubina in jersey. Antropov in Columbus with Nash could snag Leclaire if Toskala is moved and Pogge doesn't pan out. Lots of situations can turn out that's what makes it exciting.

Interesting blog though I don't really see alot of things coming into fruition. 1 is that I can't really see Toskala getting much of if any return at this point in time. You understand that he has something like an .885 save percentage right? Leafs would probably be in a playoff spot with a more reliable tender. Though thank god they aren't. I know that you said if he regained confidence but he'd have to completely turn things around. Just that he wouldn' be much of an improvement for any team in the league really. Whoever said we would want Parise and a 1st round for Kaberle probably doesn't pay much attention to hockey or have too much knowledge of the game. That is just ridiculous. NJ, rangers and montreal are two teams i could see going for Kaberle and Kubina later in the season. All fairl cap tight but that can be worked around. Other than that everything seems pretty good. Nice blog. Enjoyed reading.

i hope that we make a deal with you'll before long or we may be in the running for the 1st pick if we dont be careful, i sure hope poile isnt waiting on sullivan because we have been waiting awhile for him and even if he comes back we need to shack things up so maybe just maybe the preds will make a deal or two. I think this blog is very interesting.

Teams may be cap tight but that doesn't discount what a team would want for a return. The reason it would have to be Parise and a 1st is because the leafs would have to take on salary from a dump. Kaberle will NOT end up in New York. And if you consider too, that last year we could have had Carter and a 1st for Kaberle, Parise and 1st is not a far stretch. I would prefer to trade him out west though as the return would be higher.

We were offered Carter and a 1st last year because up until then Carter was not producing at the pace at which he is producing now (which is that of a Franchise player) and Philly seemed to have too many centre men as it was. You wouldn't even get Carter for Kaberlie straight up now if you tried. Parise is the future of the NJ franchise, he's an incredible goal scorer and just seems to get better every year. Mr. Magoo would never trade his future franchise forward for a Tomas Kaberlie who has maybe 4 years left in him. The thought that we'd get NJ's 1st rounder ASWELL as Parise is evn more absurde. Why not throw in Brodeur as well? We can package Stralman and get Clarkson and Elias too!! Kaberlie has value... but not as much as you're thinking.
January 3, 2009 3:24 PM ET | Delete
There has been rumors last season that Parise was being offered up for less. I didn't say they'd get that, just what I'd want. NJ prospect pool is not what it used to be. I'd prefer to Move him to the west. The only way the price can get as high as I'd like would be to create a bidding war. Don't forget that Kaberle has 2 more years at 4.25 which is a steal.

1st and Parise or 1st, 4th and Zajac??? Never mind, I see ndk already brought it up.
January 21, 2009 11:05 PM ET | Delete
Wow! These deals all seem great but who would be drunk enough to make them. You would have to give a 1st round pick with any of the Leaf players to get Parise. Please! How about a huge dose of reality? The Leafs don't have any players of any real value. Have you see Kaberle in his own end? Other teams have pro scouts. They watch Leaf games. Wow!
