The second round is almost at hand. The Devils proved that they are a cup contender by defeating the Lightning 4 games to 2 in round 1. But do the Devils have what it takes to beat the Senators? It would be hard for me to believe that we have seen the "best" the Senators can play -- well maybe we saw it in the first period of game 1 against the Penguins --but after t...
This Thursday marks the beginning of yet another battle of 100+ point regular season teams. New Jersey finished with 107 and Ottawa with 105, with the season series going the way of the Devils 3-1. Despite holding a 3-1 edge is the regular season series, there’s no doubting who the stronger of the two teams down the stretch was, it’s the Senators. That being said, this...
1 Buf vs 8 NYI - Buf in 5 - Bang on, but I expected a better effort out of the Sabres. They'll be in tough against the white-hot Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers. DiPietro came back sooner than I thought and played well enough to keep the Islanders in the games, but could only win the one. 2 NJ vs 7 TB - NJ in 6 - Bang on again. Holmqvist played very we...
Okay, I know everyone is tired of predicitions but hey, it's my blog!! And if you don't get the blog title, listen to "Everything to Everyone" by the Barenaked Ladies and you'll get it! Buffalo vs. New York Rangers Buffalo in 6 - they are in playoff mode and I think Miller will be the better goalie. New Jersey vs. Ottawa Ottawa in 6 - They believ...

Round 2 Pix

1 Buf vs 6 NYR - The Rangers have a fair bit of talent up front, and a slight goaltending edge, but the Sabres are simply too deep everywhere else. Sabres in 6. 2 NJ vs 4 Ott - Yeah, I know it's Marty Brodeur, but the Sens will not be denied this year...at least not here. If Emery comes close to matching Brodeur, the Sens win. Ottawa in 6. 1 Det v...
When the Ottawa Senators take the ice tonight, not only can they put their opponents up against the wall, but take once step closer to silencing the critics. It is well known how the media and fans (both loyal and of other teams) feel about the Senators, but this is the chance they’ve been waiting for since 2003. In 2003, the last time the Ottawa Senators made it to the ...

Shaping Up For An Epic Battle

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Script writers and media people alike, couldn’t have wished for a better, more exciting match-up, that the one being brought by the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres. Not only is their an obvious dislike for one another, but the match-up will also boast two of the most potent offences in the N.H.L.. The two teams do not need any fuel to light their fires, both teams app...
Well it appears we have gotten to the point where I will write a blog on my 2nd favorite team...the Buffalo Sabres. Thomas Vanek has been offered a 7 year 50 million dollar offer sheet by the Edmonton Oilers. If I'm Darcy Regier, I take the picks and run. Why? Vanek is a franchise player you might say. Look at it this way. He's going to get Edmonton's picks not the Anahei...
Remember last year when the Sens were the favorite...but Brian Murray was playing the underdog card with his team and the media? Well, it worked. He got his guys to play a physical brand of hockey that probably no Sens team had ever played before. And it was good enough to get them to the Finals. A year later and the roles seem to be reversed...with the Sens truly...
Western Conference 1. Detroit vs 8. Nashville Detroit dominated throughout the season, with a rough patch where many of their key defencemen were injured. Nashville made a comeback to clinch the final playoff spot due to clutch goaltending by Dan Ellis. The main concern for both teams will be in the net. Does Hasek have it in him? I say yes. Winner: Detroit 2. S...
That's right, get comfy we have less than 24-hours until the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and as we've all come accustomed to, this ain't no race, it's a marathon. One of my favourite quotes of all-time was made by Harry Neale from Hockey Night In Canada. Back in 1994 when the Canucks battled back from a 3-1 series deficit to force game seven versus the Rangers. Harry...
I only did the western conference going 2-2. I picked Calgary and they came just a bit short, and Anaheim shocked everybody except Dallas. Anyways.. Round 2 Predictions. Just noticed that the first, second, fifth and sixth seeds advanced in each conference. These have got to be some of the best second round matchups I have seen in quite a while. WESTERN CONFEREN...

Round 2 Predictions

First of all, Let me just say how disappointed in the lack of orginality in these picks : http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2008/news/story?id=3364125 ...picking the higher seated team across the board...perhaps consider the how each team is playing and then decide... Here it goes: East: Rangers vs. Penguins - This should be quite an exciti...

NHL Roundup- 1/17/09

Kings 2, Stars 3/SO Mike Ribeiro scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Stars beat the Kings 3-2. Ribeiro also tied the game with 1:12 left in regulation, and also racked up an assist. For LA, Alexander Frolov tied the game at two with just 17 seconds left in regulation, but it was not enough for the Kings, as they lost their fourth game in a row. Dustin Brown...

Devils 5, Thrashers 1 Zach Parise scored his 30th goal of the season, as the Devils rolled over the Southeast division bottom-feeders in the Atlanta Thrashers. Parise's 30th goal of the season came on the powerplay, and the young winger continues to get better and better. John Madden and Brian Gionta scored shorthanded goals for the Atlantic Division leading Devils...

No Ground Beef Allowed

Welcome to the No Ground Beef allowed Blog, I believe it is self explainitory.... Ok, most of you know that I am not a part of tank nation even though I know finishing as low in the standings gives the team a better chance at finding the next one. I just can't hope for a loss, can't do it, tried it, got sick to my stomach, end of story. However that being said, ...
EAST: BOS over MON in 5 (Price has a playoff meltdown while BOS defence flourish) NYR over WAS in 7 (a hard-faught battle with Lundqvist besting Theodore) PHI over PIT in 6 (Philly's toughness gets the best of Crosby & Fleury) NJD over CAR in 6 (Brodeur is back to post-season form, but CAR puts in four solid one-goal games) WEST...
Before we discuss the second round, I wanted to talk to you about a discussion between a dad and a son. My son always reminds me that the players are very human and they make mistakes and really they don’t set out to lose. He had to remind me of this over and over again as the Hawks were eliminating my Flames. I have had conversations with my son reminding me the F...

2nd Round Predictions

So I was 7 for 8 in 1st round predictions (Sharks....tsk tsk tsk). Not only did they screw up my predictions but my playoff pools are done! On to Round 2: Boston (1) vs. Carolina (6) - This will be a great series. I like Carolina but Boston, after disposing of the Canadiens in 4 straight are riding high with confidence - I'll go Bruins in 6. Was...
Like everyone else, I’ll give my predictions for this upcoming 2nd playoff round of the greatest sport on planet earth. Let me get one thing off my chest before we start. Goalies will make and break everyone of these matchups, and are MY key to who I think wins each series. Pens vs Caps: Everyone sees Ovechkin and thinks this one is gonna be close. I...

2nd Round Predictions

Well after going 7-1 last year, I struggled to a 5-3 first round this year. I should have known the sharks were going to play like "ill tempered sea bass" and not sharks again. Also I lost the Flyers and Devils series. Random thoughts: * Glad to see Calgary lose after every writer on the continent anointed them the cup champs after the trade deadline. There h...

On to Round two

Joining the rest of my fellow hockey buzz enthusiasts, here are my predictions for Round Two as well as a review of Round One. Round One I'll take a 6-1-1 record into the second round. I correctly predicted wins for Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh (even got the games right), Detroit, Vancouver, and Chicago. San Jose let me down, just like pretty much everyone e...
Versus dropped the ball last night missing the National Anthem in Chicago. They interview Sharp before the game and he says he can't wait for the anthem, then they don't show it. Get with it Versus. I mean, its no Wayne Messmer from '91 All Star Game, (see below) but still, they should have showed it. MB Wayne Messmer = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvpxVE_kQXg

I was wrong on my Boston in 4 predicition, but who wouldn't have thought the B's were gonna roll through Carolina after their dismantling of Montreal like they did. Down 3-1 in the series, I thought for sure Boston was done. When Boston tied it up 2-2 in game 7 that changed my mind a bit. Then came overtime. What pure domination Carolina showed through the first 10 minutes...

Kaberle's House Not For Sale

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
Quick question. Would you dig a hole if you didn't have enough dirt to fill it? That is precisely what Leaf management would be doing if they finally trade Tomas Kaberle when his no trade clause is lifted during the off season. Most leaf fans and Leaf reporters see it as a no brainer to rid themselves of # 15. Their points (somewhat valid) are as follows: (1).Kaberle will ...
With so much attention and discussion around the Phil Kessel trade and the repercussions it may have on the future of the Maple Leafs, I thought it would be interesting to go back 10 years or so and see what impact the first round draft picks of the last decade have played in the team's overall success and with the benefit of hindsight, has the trading of picks helped to p...
My prediction was a high scoring, offensive battle with the Lightning coming out on top. Instead, we got a low scoring chess match in which the Lightning lost. It’s high time I stop predicting Lightning wins; they never seem to come through. Let’s get to my post-game Good, Bad, Ugly analysis. The Good The best part about tonight, despite the outcome, was ...
The second round of the NHL Playoffs start tonight and already the big name teams are gone Wings, Pens, Canucks, Shark, Hawks and the defending champ Bruins. Parity at its finest people. So without any further ado here are my predictions for the second round of the NHL playoffs: Blues-Kings (Blues in 7)- This is going to be a very low scoring series in my opinion. I ...

Round 1 has officially come to a close, thus inaugurating the annual first wave of NHL Playoff MVP speculation. Undoubtedly, there are those who will claim that it’s simply to early to judge, but we’re pretty sure that even such purists secretly guess-timate as to which first round fire will keep burning. What can we say, we simply can’t help ourselves. With that, he...
Many websites and groups conduct mock re-drafts for certain years to see how the draft could have been if we knew how these young men (at the time) would have turned out. The Toronto Maple Leafs are always a hot topic when it comes to draft picks (or their lack of), and with having the 4th overall pick in 2016, let’s revisit some of the most notable draft years and th...
The Boston Bruins have seen a noticeable slump since their Stanley Cup victory back in 2010-11. Prior to that, they made a number of trades, picks and acquisitions. But what could they have done differently? Despite their roster, most of the picks in the last 15 years have yet to wear a Bruins jersey, or even an NHL jersey for that matter. Surprisingly, Boston has ha...
Over the last 15 years, the Washington Capitals have amassed 21 first-round draft picks. Count ‘em, 21. Most of which are still with the team, others traded for other picks and considerations. They could have made some better moves, but it goes to show first round picks success is a numbers game. The more you have, the better chances you have of landing a star. De...
Sorry Detroit fans, but this one is quite sad. Since the year 2000, the Detroit Red Wings have made 7 first-round selections. All others were traded off for assets and players, but to have only 7 picks in 15 years, considering the abundance of talent that has emerged since, is the main reason why Detroit isn’t the Dynasty Team they were in the days of Steve Yzerman. ...
Most, if not all, will pick the Blues to advance to the Western Conference Finals. It's going to be tough for the boys in Victory green but not impossible. Rangers Offseason

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
My two fave teams tied are the Rangers and the Islanders. i am writing about a possible NY Rangers offseason. they're going to start a rebuild, but who stays and who goes? i'd say Zuccarello is Definitely Staying, and even though McDonagh is a great player, i think it's time to trade him to Columbus for Pick number 3. The rangers need a 1st round pick, and the Blue Jackets...
I need to say I'm confused lately about all the talk out there that the Sharks would be so much better off against the Oilers than the Ducks, Kings or any of the other hopefuls they might meet in round one. I don't know if people haven't been watching the Oilers in recent months, or if they didn't notice the last game the Sharks played against them, or if they're thin...
If we’ve learned anything over the years, you never count out Getzlaf and Perry; and to the Ducks’ daunting d-corps, add in forwards the likes of Silfverberg, Rakell, and Eaves, and it’s only a matter of time until they start paddling – or is it swimming? – their way up the standings. I would expect no less of the Kings, although time is quickly running out on th...
