Playoffs are here, finally. Some tidbits:
-Sean Avery's creative screening of Martin Brodeur certainly crossed some kind of line. I heard Ron MacLean call it "dishonorable" on HNIC, but that would assume Avery had any honorable traits in the first place.
-As the experts stand stunned at the Stars two games to none lead, remember that Anaheim was an inconsistent team all year, and had issues scoring goals. Dallas is a good all around team with very good goaltending.
-The Colorado-Minnesota series has been fantastic. Peter Forsberg's foot might not be 100%, but he's playing like a man possessed.
-The Flyers have arguably been the better team in their series against Washington for 5 of the 6 periods played. Still, the Flyers get scant credit. I keep hearing Alexander Ovechkin get knocked for having a bad game-maybe the Flyers just did a good job containing him...
-The officiation has been brutal in most of the playoff games I have seen. Last night Zach Parise got cross checked in the side of the face, and no call was made. Actually, a call was made, but it wasn't a penalty. It was blown dead for the Rangers' player playing the puck with a high stick. How the ref noticed that, and missed the blatant cross check to the side of the head, is really beyond me.
-Ron Wilson might want to update his resume
-Big kudos to Calgary last night for erasing the 3-0 lead of the Sharks.
-Why does NBC give us, during the playoffs, the worst possible combination of analysts for the intermission reports? Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury shouldn't be allowed to be within 500 yards of each other when either is on camera.
-When a major complaint of novice or non fans of hockey is trouble following the puck, why does the NHL paint a huge, distracting "Stanley Cup Playoffs" logo on the middle of the friggin' ice? Guys, you want to grow the sport in the US, right? Well stop distracting the easily distracted football fans!!
-Another reffing note: the grading system is obviously not working when a guy like Dave Jackson is working playoff games.
-Flyers forward Patrick Thoresen was believed to have ruptured a testicle in game one of the Flyers-Caps series. He might be back for game three. If he does return that soon, he didn't need two balls.
As always, great points...
I refuse to watch between periods on NBC. Who decided putting Mike Milburry on TV was a good idea? This guy is brutal. NBC needs to start taking notes from CBC and HNIC.No penalty on a cross check to Parise's mouth that cost him two teeth? Nice job NHL officiating. That's what we want people talking about.
Edit: wrong play. Backman got 4 mins on that play. Still a disgrace. How is that not intent to injure, a misconduct, and a suspension?
Good work Jsaq. The refs have been very consistant, the problem is they have been consistantly bad. I'm not sure how you stop the blown calls that continually happen on a game to game basis.
Spot on Jsaquella - especially about the NBC coverage. I like McGuire in between the benches but most anyone can give you insight into what's happening at ice level -that's just a great new feature. But I can't stand him or Milbury in studio. Bring back Hullie.
yeah. i think about half of us here could do a better job than milbury. and what was that whole 'don't shoot the messenger' crappola? was he really trying to divert the blame for the yashin signing. 20 minute intermissions should also be banned!
Reporter to Thoresen: What did your girlfriend say when she heard you were ok?Thoresen: She was happy the nuts were ok hahahha...classic!
Great stuff! I agree with Anaheim being inconsistent, but not lately at home. The Ducks had the second best home record in the NHL. The lack of motivation and suddenly inept PK ARE surprising.
Nice blog Saq!!!! most of us Canadians can't stand Mcguire either!!! Milbury is a joke!!! i think the best series so far is the Flyers/Caps. Flyers did a hek of a job shutting AO and MG yesterday. Lets see how this series prevails!!!
why does millbury have a job like that. let us list his bonehead career moves.1.trading ed jovanovski early in his career.2.trading todd bertuzzi early in his career.3.trading a 1st round draft pick which turned out to be dany heatley.4.trading roberto luongo with out giving him a chance.5.trading olli jokinen without giving him a chance.so why does his opinion get on national tv??????
Great job Jsaq. I have to disagree with the Mcguire and Milbury comments. I completely enjoy it......let me clarify. It is a train wreck, I love the uncomfortable feel of the whole situation. It is like watching a 12 car accident in real time. It seems like they can't stand each other and just want to get it over with as fast as possible. Why else would they talk so fast? Watch it as a comedy and it makes it that much better. Trust me.
I almost threw up when Pierre said, "I am the coach of the Philadelphia Flyers"...all I could think of was Big Kjell Samuelsson calling him a "...waste of space"
The Canadian broadcast presentation is superior to the American. Give credit to Mike Emerick. His call is exciting.BRING BACK HOME WHITES!
If Thoresen only has one ball, does that mean he has two strikes against him???For Mike "I can't hack it as a GM, so I am going to suck on camera as well" Millbury" to open his mouth and expect anything productive to come out is beyond me. He is just tragic. What was that about the "Crapitals" and the inane notion that the Wachovia Center would be half filled with Caps fans?? They can't find Caps fans in D.C., how in God's name are they going to be found in the Delaware Valley and if they did find TWO - how would they get tickets??? Crazy.Nice work JS...I've missed the "Random Thoughts" column - nice to see it alive and kicking.SYF
I posted on another log about Avery that I wish it had been Hextall instead of Brodeur. I guarantee Averys' hollywood girlfriend would dump him for becoming a eunuch.McGuire and Milbury should take their act on the road.........preferably to the Motel 6 in PeoriaWhen will the networks figure out thatthe "color" man should only be allowed to speak during stoppages in play. Mike Emrick barely got the call of Umberger's goal in because Eddie O was blathering on...as usual.
Thought the same exact thing on PM and Millbury. How about somebody w/TV skills in that spot? Brutal.
